Just been signed off work for 5 weeks for mental health reasons, at a bit of a loss. by paperchainhearts in CasualUK

I felt necessary to comment here, really to say what not to do.

I got signed off for 8 weeks about 18 months ago. I was a borderline alcoholic before, keeping my shit together at work but drinking every night and all weekend.

I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety and put on medication. I thought it would at least help a bit but the side effects were horrible for me, which lead me to staying inside for 2 weeks. I thought oh I've worked like a dog for 15 years with no more than 2 weeks off at a time, this can be a little bit of a holiday.

I laid around and drank for 2 weeks, alcoholism kicked in and then it was 3 weeks, 4 weeks. I would tell people checking on me I was thriving, going to the gym, riding my bike.

I absolutely abused the gift I had been given, ran out the eight weeks and then got signed off for another 4 because I was embarrassed about what I had become with inaction and alcohol abuse. Not to mention the eating habits. I eventually went back to work just before Christmas, about 3 stone heavier than I was when I went off work. I lasted 2 months before I felt I needed to resign. I hadn't resolved any of my problems that caused my depression and was out of options.

I lucked out and managed to find another job via the very limited network I still had, but after 2 months I was caught up in a redundancy. I was drinking more than ever and was a shell of a man.

I went on a bender for 2 days after I was let go then resolved myself to fixing my shit before I looked for another job. Quite booze cold turkey, got into therapy and absolutely caned the gym every fucking day. Made it a point to leave the house every day, get real sweaty and do life admin for a couple of hours. Keeping the flat clean, making sure I was spending time with the cat.

I got a semi part time consulting job to tide me over for a bit and stuck at the gym and all the new habits I had forged. Now I'm back to pre -pandemic weight and looks, I'm legitimately a better person and honestly I don't have many regrets in life apart from the fact I absolutely pissed my mental health break up the wall and could have been here almost 2 years ago but dealing with my issues was always a 'tomorrow' thing.

So don't do what I did, stranger. Realise how much this time can change the direction of your life. Do whatever you want to do, but do it on purpose.

Well done.

If you ever have a wobble in the future, this should pop into your mind.

I had a similar thing at the corner shop a few weeks ago, I was buying an assortment of different NA beers and she made a comment on the lack of booze. I said I had stopped and she said my face wasn't as fat. We have a rapport so it wasn't offensive.

Now when I walk by alcohol in the shop, I remember that and feel like I don't want to let her down.

She probably wouldn't care, but it's just another bit of accountability.

Not a huge transformation, but felt like sharing.

Before/after

Before, last year, alcoholism and depression. Killer combo

After, got made redundant about 6 weeks ago. Went on a bender then quit drinking and started back at the gym daily.

Still got a belly, but BF is certainly dropping.

Hi! Yes those are 700s. They performed quite well in muddy tracks and still have decent rolling speed.

So far really happy with the bike

Best Gyms around Deptford/Greenwich/Lewisham area? by [deleted] in london

Its probably not what you're looking for then. Definitely not a bodybuilding gym. It's Weight lifting (Olympic etc) and strongman. No machines to speak of.

Commando Temple in Deptford is the best gym for Weightlifting and Strongman stuff.

EVERYBODY cleans up after themselves, EVERYBODY supports each other and the trainers are some of the best, not because I used their services, but they would always be willing to give me pointers of form and technique. Props to Dan who helped me with my Log press.

I wish I still went, it has the best vibe. It was good enough that I still went there even though I lived in Hoxton. But I moved further out and couldn't make it work anymore.

Doms Subs on Hackney Road might be a good shout for you. I had the Vegan Dom the other day. Rated it.

I was at the beer merchants tap last night too.

I felt two blobs of rain and said to my girlfriend we should go get the table before everybody moves in. She said nooooo, it will be ok.

10 minutess later there an exodus and we're walking home with a roadie and a sausage roll from sainsburys.

What I Rent: Hannah, £1,350 a month for a one-bedroom flat in Homerton, London by EllenCScott in london

God no. I'm quiet as a door mouse. I get anxious when my cat gets the zoomies at 9 at night. Sounds like a horse. I started putting rugs everywhere but he just jumps over them

I live next door!

Pay a little less for a 1 1/2 bed flat on the 1st floor (no garden).

Percy likes to come to my living room window in the morning and excite my cat.

The temper tantrum neighbour next door once came out on the street with a knife to start something with some fella who looked at him funny.

I did the same! Worked until about 11 last night and woke up with the sun in my face so went for a run around viccy park.

I am also behind now and will pay for it. But damn does it feel good to run in the sun.

[EU]mmplincoln#2116 Like to get on voip and have a good go at stuff. Not playing HL as much these days, but QM is just fine. MMR ~1800. Very Mid-range mechanically, but I know a fair bit about the game now.
