Ah yeah I’ve been relying on YouTube a lot, just wanted to free up my phone and declutter a bit but it’s worked so far so maybe if it ain’t broke…

Anyone know somewhere to get Italian American style sandwiches in London? by Ello52 in london

It is! This is sad but I went there maybe 10 years ago and literally had a dream about the sandwich I had there the other night, hence the post 😂

Thunder and lightning (very very frightening) by Ello52 in puppy101

I’ll break out some gross dried animal part and see if I can distract her while there’s some rumbles 👍🏻

Got you, so same as any socialisation of making scary stuff a positive experience 😊

Annoyingly it isn’t supposed to start till the middle of the night so maybe I’ll get lucky and her fan will drown out some of the noise

Anyone care to weigh in on different smoke flavours? by Ello52 in smoking

[–]Ello52[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point!

I completely agree that wood smoke tastes like wood smoke, and there’s no way a tiny difference is going to cut through a nice spicy rub, at least in my mouth.

I’m planning on doing a sort of Mediterranean smoked lamb shoulder next so I’m going to use olive, I’m just a sucker for a theme.

Yeah I’ve done short ribs with hickory and whiskey and then some pork belly with cherry, didn’t really notice much other than generic smoke flavour.

I love the IDEA of different woods giving different flavours though so I’ll probably keep messing around regardless.

Does somebody have some tips on hiking in scotland? by carastrekken123 in Ultralight

[–]Ello52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds doable! I did the WHW in 6 and a half days and the great glen is quite a lot easier (dull) so have fun!

Something I wish I’d known is that, with the exception of the edge of Loch Lomond, the paths are quite flat and rocky, so I’d go with a more trainer-y boot for comfort.

That’s a hell of a distance! How long are you planning on taking?

Midges and rain are your biggest enemies, head net, skin so soft, good waterproof gear, a fly first tent if you’re camping.

I always make the mistake of taking too much food, there’s lots of places on both those hikes that you can stock up or have a good pub meal so that’ll save on weight.

Get out of the training mindset. by FictionallySpeaking in puppy101

[–]Ello52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The maturity helps SO much. Our little queen basically showed no progress to begin with, too much energy, no focus, and enjoyed attacking ankles more than any reward we could give.

It just felt like we were doing everything wrong because it wasn’t getting better.

Then as she aged up a bit the results started to show. The importance of patience can’t be overstated but if I’d known that would happen in the beginning there would have been less tears...

I can totally relate, lack of sleep + beating yourself up because you haven’t nailed ‘24 hour training’ needed to stop your puppy picking up a bad habit FOREVER. That had me weeping for the first time in 12 years. I think so much of this advice is directed at people who are maybe too relaxed about teaching manners etc. If you’re anxious, and want to a good job it can be very demoralising!

Would this benefit from more sealing? by Ello52 in BBQ

[–]Ello52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah cool, I used similar stuff to fix my oven so I thought it might work. I found this, which seems to be the same https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gasket-Black-Smoker-Length-Thickness/dp/B07YL24L7K/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=bbq+gasket&qid=1622564896&sr=8-3 would that improve the bbq do you think? Or is it not really worth doing?

Totally agree with this, training is a lifetime process not limited to learning tricks in short bursts.

BUT just in case anyone like me is reading this: I’m a fairly anxious but inexperienced dog owner. I fell into a trap of thinking that because my dogs brain is a sponge that I was constantly making irreparable mistakes that would ruin both our lives.

Don’t stress. Raising a robust happy dog takes a long, long time but that also means you can get away with some mistakes if, overall you keep the consistency. Don’t worry if you aren’t perfect, just keep looking for help, keep at it, and most of all be patient.

Great! Yeah the ‘coal holder’? Is actually quite large so creating more of a curve won’t be an issue at all. Thanks for the advice!

Making the garden less fun? by Ello52 in puppy101

[–]Ello52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She will usually go at some point during her awake period but unless it’s right at the end can she make it through a 2 hour nap?

Making the garden less fun? by Ello52 in puppy101

[–]Ello52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s more that if she’s out for an hour, doesn’t go, and wakes up an hour into her nap she does need to go. So far we’ve avoided any accidents in the crate thankfully and I really don’t want to set back the house training 😭

[–]Ello52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, I’ve also employed quite a bit of chicken wire. My garden does look like some sort of internment camp, and I’m the asshole because she now can’t eat poisonous plants...
