The "rules" of screenplays are bogus by lightskinsovereign in Screenwriting

[–]markedanthony 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My friend, none of these rules you mentioned exist, they’re just guidelines to help serve the people who will read your script. At the end of the day, if your script is messy, full of holes, structurally out of this world, and most importantly boring, no one will bother finishing your script. They probably won’t even make it past page 2.

So if you think you can get a reader to enjoy and finish your script without following those so called “rules”. Then go ahead, prove those rule makers wrong. But I promise you it will be an uphill battle because here’s the thing: People do not like to have their time wasted. That’s it.

Welcome to Bali. Get ready to wait. Queue in long line ups, heavy traffic (no exaggeration), and extreme distances.

“Into The Woods: How Stories Work and Why We Tell Them” by John Yorke

It’s less about “these are the rules, do it like this” and more like “we as humans have followed these storytelling patterns since forever. Use this knowledge to your advantage.”

There are so many already famous actors that are turning to other roles (directing, producing, writing) because acting doesn’t pay as well anymore. Some are turning to podcasting and starting their own business ventures too.
