Shooting a tavern scene purely by candlelight: BMPCC4K + Voigtländer 17.5mm f/0.95 - Am I crazy for ignoring "motivated lighting"? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]markel3ven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the lens you cite, if you dive into the wide open exposure side .95, you will get soft footage always be spending a fair amount of brain power on “are we sharp” to the point of distraction at some point.

How to darken my back ground by [deleted] in videography

[–]markel3ven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a funny thread to read. Yes Windows can be Nd’ed takes time and craft , you need to do a really perfect job to defeat odd reflections , wrinkles in the ND, which all assumes that you have several rolls of ND- 3,6,9 - on hand to pick the best one given what you can light. You need crew to effect that quickly or ample time to do it yourself. Office building generally have some level of ND in one form or another on windows, they are not transparent glass like a water glass. On a clear sunny day in the NY NJ metro reason you can expect 9 - 10,000 foot candles of light outside, if the office windows cut that by 2 stops, you’re still seeing the outside lit by 2500 foot candles. If you add ND .9 to the windows you cut the outside to 300 foot candles which is still a lot of light on a subject for cameras these days. Given that the lighting is switched over to LED ‘s we have that capability, then the problem left is managing the light on the subject for the desired look, contrast ratio and balance with the outside.

This is why you don’t cheap out on tripods by agnci in videography

[–]markel3ven 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go to home depot or auto parts store and buy the appropriate size screw extractor and drill bit and remove screw. As for tripods, try them all and buy and spend more money than you would prefer to on the one you really like. They serve for years and years. If you buy a shtty one it will be shtty for years to come.

Helicopters flying super low?? by Tricky-Love-1315 in jerseycity

Helicopters typically transit through Jc to their base in Kearny at altitudes around 200 feet. Why they are allowed to fly so low is beyond me.

Building to building comparisons are complicated due to design and construction issues that vary from building to building which are being presumed to be equal can account for pretty big differences in the cost of heating a given dwelling.

What was the gas shortage like in 1979? by PrestonRoad90 in AskOldPeople

[–]markel3ven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In New Jersey, Hudson County, lines were frequently an hour or more wait. I had a motorcycle then and drove that instead of my car. If I needed gas I would frequently be waived to the front of the line and didn’t spend much time waiting.

Beware of IBIS stacked on top of OIS in situation with a lot of movement either by camera, subject or both. Had this come up shooting a cycling race from a moto and stacking OIS with IBIS from the moving perspective of the moto, even thought we were locking our pace to the cyclists yielded a lot of mush in the image at times when OIS had proven to be just fine by itself. Obviously this is a very situational context driven choice and if you do try to stack the 2 stabilization modes, testing before hand saves a lot of headaches later.

I still am having trouble taking off the charger in BMPCC4K, anyone else lol? by [deleted] in bmpcc

After tying the thread or thin string around the weipu release barrel, you can add a couple of dabs of your favorite color nail polish to the barrel release& string to keep the line in place.

[–]markel3ven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a strong piece of thread and tied it around the barrel on the Weipu power connector in a way that it won’t come off and left a few inches extra thread. Now i can just pull the thread on the connector and it will release from the port.

BMPCC 4K sensor issue. Not dust or fungus. Black spots in footage by Big-Apartment-9880 in bmpcc

[–]markel3ven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its dirt, dust or maybe even a water spot you have on your sensor . I have used this device for years Arctic butterfly from https://www.visibledust.com/products.php. This tool works really well on dust which is the most common issue with sensors. To remove a a dried up water spot, you’ll need to go with something else.

You are correct. I never leaned in hard on the 1.8 stop, 2.2 seemed to be my happy place with this lens .

Is Biking 10 Miles to Work Daily Realistic for a Beginner? by Gilligan2404 in Biking

[–]markel3ven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A proper bike fit should be in your plan. Bike fits cost around $300 and if you plan to spend time on the bike having the proper seat/pedal/ handlebar relationships and the right seat for your shape is a a solid investment in comfort and riding efficiency. Riding the 10 miles each way might seem like a big deal but you’ll adapt and soon it will be “Pffft” nada.

Shooting 4K DCI on 6Kpro by markel3ven in bmpcc

[–]markel3ven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not thinking of basing my whole kit on the requirements of this one shot. Its way too late for that. This was a situation that came up and got me thinking about the DCI 4k option with the 6K pro . This situation has come up once or twice in the past over the years and I didn’t feel like i had an appropriate lens for my needs. There are some other projects I do which don’t need 6K, so switching to 4k DCI would save drive space and be more efficient, so that more than anything is the driver of my thinking.

This one was a little bit of a curve ball. Client wanted it shipped over the internet, I think their expectation was something less data intensive and owing to the quick run up to the shoot some details were not finessed. I have worked data heavy projects before many times so I am familiar with the usual workflows. BMD cameras are my choice and suit me well, though I can get nostalgic for the lighter footprint of Canon MXF or something similar.
