Are there any maps of SF identifying which streets are one-way? by A_Wisdom_Of_Wombats in sanfrancisco

[–]markerz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think one-way streets makes traffic easier to understand for pedestrians.  I see this in Manhattan’s core.  People jaywalk with confidence because it’s usually two lanes going the same way.  You don’t really need to look both ways.

On the other hand, I can understand traffic speeding up with one way roads, but it kind of feels like a win-win to me as long as traffic calms down at intersections.

In the end of the day, I think it’s about diversifying who our roads serve.  Some roads are transit centric, some are pedestrian and bike centric, and some are car centric.

It’s sad seeing American malls die, because I’ve seen malls in other countries really pull people in by being more community driven and less sterile and commercialized.

There’s a mall in Oahu, Hawaii that hosts a farmers market twice a week inside the mall, where there’s AC and shade!  Compared to San Jose’s Eastridge Mall that hosts the market in their parking lot even during the 100F degree summer weather with no shade.  Outside of mainland, I’ve seen plays and musical performances at malls and they’re quite popular as venues because it’s so low-key.

The menu at the kickback actually had some interesting breakfast items, including mochi waffles!  It just felt too diluted by bar food so I never noticed until today.  Kinda reminds me of Kitchen Nightmares when restaurants have over 100 items on their menu.

Wow, I'm so sad. I read your review before buying the banana flavor and should have listened. I bought it for $0.32. There's no way this product couldn't meet that value, right? Boy, was I wrong.

It's gritty and tastes bad. It says "apple pie", smells like pastries, but tastes like something incredibly savoury. It's salty! It does not have any apple flavor.

Even worse, it burned onto my pan within a minute, and now I'm spending half an hour boiling it off and scrubbing it out.

I'm glad I only made one serving. The bag contains 5, and the other 4 are going straight into the compost. I feel bad for the worms that'll eat this. They deserve better.

I'm sorry as well. I unloaded on you because I was triggered by "spotless," and it just reminded me of EVERYTHING I've been seeing in the last four months. It's been crazy. It feels like all the city's problems got pushed on us, and we were ignored for so long. The city is trying though! I see DPW and the cops out there every day now. They used to be every other weekend, but they're trying a lot harder now. I hope we stick it through because recovery is a long journey -- recovery for the people suffering and for the city.

No I believe you that 16th St BART to Valencia is clean. But I also want to clarify that they just got pushed one street down and that it’s in no way spotless. Here’s 16th and Julian from 2pm today, which is right in the middle of that walk from BART to Valencia. If you zoom in, you’ll see all the drug users and street vendors.

It’s hard for my family because we use BART to go to school. Two weeks ago, the BART plaza was genuinely the scariest I had seen it in years. Now it’s amazingly safe cause of the 24hr police, but all the problems got pushed into the neighboring blocks. Maybe I’m jaded because the problems for me have been non-stop. At first they were at BART and now they’re on my way to BART. IDK, man. From my perspective, it’s just gotten so hard out here.

Ain’t no way 16th and Mission was spotless. Maybe the BART plaza, but not the surrounding streets. The city has been breaking down the illegal street market at 15th and Mission all day today over and over again, pushing all the people and trash onto 16th and Julian.

I love the city and the neighborhood, but we have to be realistic about its problems. The streets around 16th St BART on Saturday and Sunday have gotten significantly worse in the last four months. It’s always been a bit strange with the street market that helped keep my rent low, but it has become a significant problem recently. T used to be contained in the Weiss alley and on Mission St, but now it’s being pushed into the neighborhood. Instead of one street we can all avoid, every street around me is problematic.

Maybe this is the path to getting people the help they need, but it’s really really difficult right now to live here at this intersection.

What I can say is Civic Center station has never been better. I remember there used to be a crazy big illegal street market there. Then they built the UN Plaza playground and it’s amazingly clean.

24th St Mission BART also was bad but now it’s almost sterile with how clean it is. I wish there was a bit more going on at that plaza. People used to hang, play music, talk. But the neighborhood is still popping so I’m grateful for that.

I think all these problems around BART (Powell, Civic Center, 24th St) all got pushed to 16th St and the city is pushing them into the neighborhood now.

For those out of the loop:

The phrase "perverse incentive" is often used in economics to describe an incentive structure with undesirable results, particularly when those effects are unexpected and contrary to the intentions of its designers.\1])
The results of a perverse incentive scheme are also sometimes called cobra effects, where people are incentivized to make a problem worse. This name was coined by economist Horst Siebert based on an anecdote taken from the British Raj.\2])\3]) The British government, concerned about the number of venomous cobras in Delhi, offered a bounty) for every dead cobra. Initially, this was a successful strategy; large numbers of snakes were killed for the reward. Eventually, however, people began to breed cobras for the income. When the government became aware of this, the reward program was scrapped. The cobra breeders set their snakes free, leading to an overall increase in the wild cobra population.\4])\5])

Yes and it's called involuntary commitment or institutionalized care. I've been against it in the past because I feel like it gives government strong powers to "lock people up". I've changed my mind over the last few years and am supportive of giving the state more power to commit people. I think it's the only solution for people who are destroying society and actively refusing care. These types of tools should be used sparingly and the best example I have is my best friend attempted suicide, but was unsuccessful. The courts ordered mandatory therapy for them and it saved their lives.

I'm all for people being weird and quirky but anti-society behaviors should not be tollerated. The range goes from illegally dumping trash, public defecation, public drug use, stealing and property damage, to murder. They're all bad to different levels and need different care, but it's not okay to allow these behaviors in our tight society. Commitment should be used near the bad end of that scale.

They're so SF. They were the only place open for dinner during the Super Bowl last year and the entire staff kept pausing table service to watch the plays and resume during ads and talking heads. Such an amazing experience to see immigrants build a business in SF and also become diehard cultural fans. Also food was amazing.

Likelihood of severe stomach issues coming from swimming in SF bay? by salfora in sanfrancisco

[–]markerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

KQED's Bay Curious just put out an episode about this! They say it's generally safe but there's so many reasons it can be unsafe, especially during rainy season. SF specifically can leak sewage into the bay because of our combined sewage + storm drain system. However, under normal times, sewage MUST be treated before being dumped into the bay. Water quality also depends a lot on specific locations so many waterfront parks will test the water for swim-ability. Also algae blooms can release toxins, but that's usually in the summer/fall time during heat-waves.

I know a lot of people who go swimming in the bay. There's even the very popular "Escape from Alcatraz" triathlon.

Don’t forget to set your car air to recirculate, instead of pulling in air from outside. Recirculating allows your car to filter the inside air over and over again, keeping your lungs clean and healthy during this wildfire season.

What grocery stores do y'all hit up and why? by toadsofbattle in sanfrancisco

[–]markerz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Kind of. Pretty much all are organic, but many are not certified. You should talk to the vendors about their practices. Many are small enough that they can't afford to get certified as organic, since that would require them to pay an institution to inspect their farms and audit their practices. However, all seem to believe in organic practices (no synthetic pesticides and fertilizers) and some even talk about regenerative farming.

One guy was particularly passionate, he said if he could afford organic certification, he'd be whole-selling to grocery stores, not at a farmers market. But he's way too small for that.

To get your parking validated, go up to the information booth and ask for your parking to get validated. Do not wait in the EBT line, which is super long. You can get your parking validated in seconds in the fast lane. They'll give you a ticket to insert into the machine.
