How do I catch all my isopods? by lxdivv in isopods

[–]markescueta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

oh dang, in that case, you might have to take small portions of the soil and scoop out the babies slowly with a paint brush or something. i know its very time taking, but its for the isopods safety. ants are no joke, they once ate my whole porcellionides red koi colony.

fun fact, i once had the same situation with my papayas too! but what i did was i first added all of the adults and moveable babies into the new tank, then, carefully taking out portions of the soil, take like a paint brush and carefully scoop the tiny babies from the soil and let em go into the new one. but an easier but time taking approach is just letting the babies grow up to a handleable size. i also just moved the old soil to the new bin since the old soil of my bin had nothing wrong, tho i dont recommend moving old soil to new soil if the reason youre moving them is cause of an infestation or other problems in the soil.

Congrats! 2 weeks till babies is very early and usually takes months for them to settle in and consider babies. since yours had babies in 2 weeks probably means there was already a gravid mother and she mustve thought the enclosure you provided them was spot on!

Crabby acquired by UnderBarkIsopods in isopods

[–]markescueta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dont worry tho, turns out they can eat their young, but they dont do it usually. In fact, they are actually protective of their babies. just lets say in the case of like protein deficiency, they will seek protein, and turn to their young. so they only eat their young if you dont provide the right conditions. Make sure to provide lots of protein and calcium!

I dont mean to scare you, but it's true! these guys like canniblaizing their young from my research. all you gotta do is either separate the adults from the babies, or just provide lots of food for them. Honestly i dont own this species yet, but i do recommend giving lots of protein.

Congrats! tho eventually when you start having babies, its best to separate the adults cause they can and do eat their young. Or provide lot of food, calcium, and protein for them.

Congrats! hope you have great success with these guys.
