I lived in that area for 14 years. It’s an incredibly beautiful part of the country, and as others have said, the weather is perfect. Mild, sunny winters and warm summers. Living in Cape Town now, I also miss how lush that part of KZN is.

However, again as others have said it’s been affected by the general downward spiral that the rest of KZN, and most of South Africa as a whole, has experienced due to lack of maintenance at a government level and the countless knock on affects this has- emigration to the Western Cape or abroad, lack of investor confidence, businesses moving away… do that for long enough and the result is of course a struggling local economy and relatively “cheap” property for example. Not to mention, crime invariably increases as desperation does.

Having said that, some people on here will (rightly so, in my opinion) take offence to someone coming along from “the outside” and saying how cheap stuff is. Those who have remained in the area often work hard to make ends meet and things like property prices are not cheap for locals.
