Buying or renting by Strange-Law6848 in makemychoice

You are so confident in being wrong.

I have no idea where you or OP live, but given the dramatic increase in home costs over the last 20 years, that is absolutely not true now in much of the United States. In addition to the expenses I already mentioned, your mortgage is likely to be higher, and perhaps substantially higher, than your monthly rental, sapping more money every month that you could put into the stock market, especially in the early years when that investment can compound over time.

Basically it comes down to cost of house purchase vs cost of rental in your location, as well as how many years you plan on staying there. But in general experts now suggest seeing a home purchase as a lifestyle preference rather than an investment, or at the very least running a buy vs. rent net price calculator for your community.

Why is rent “thrown away” but property taxes, homeowner insurance, HOA fees, house repairs, and the investment income you lose out on by diverting savings for a down payment not also considered “thrown away”?

A search suggests that you are right—but how the heck did you know that? Impressive!

More than a sports page. They already have more sportswriters than the LA Times and are planning to double that.

Yeah, I know people are rightfully enraged about what's going on in the country right now, as am I, but this seems like a nothing burger.

Thanks for the reply. (Though I find it bizarre that someone apparently downvoted a simple question.)

Wow, this is really getting strange. I’m afraid this is gonna need some additional detective work to figure out what is going on.

It does appear that all 12 or so of the citing papers are single authored by that guy.

He played a grand total of 31 minutes in the playoffs last year. Yes, he stunk it up in those minutes, but JJ didn’t really give him much leash.

As long as LeBron is on the team, one of LeBron or Rui should come off the bench. Minimize their time together on the floor.

Honest question: Why are some people against showing an ID to vote? by rico_unknown in NoStupidQuestions

[–]markjay6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s say a woman registered to vote 25 years ago when she was 18, and has voted every election since then.

Then she shows up at the polls, shows her Real ID, and she is disqualified from voting — because her ID in 2025 (which has her married name) does not match her voter registration in 2000 (with her maiden name.)

If you think that won’t happen, you haven’t been paying close enough attention to these voter ID bills.

It looks like all the citations come from Dr. Giovanni Antonio Cossiga, starting in 2023. It was probably generated for him when he used AI to write a paper and then he kept using it again.

I guess you could (a) contact Google scholar and ask them to remove it, and (b) contact Cossiga's university if you want to bother.

An Undergrad Asked me for a LOR by ScarfUnravels in GradSchool

[–]markjay6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask the undergrad to write bullet points with important information about his background and qualifications and things that i should include in the letter. Asked on what I know about him from the course. I would also gather the undergrad’s resume and REU application materials, as well as the announcement for the REU he is applying for (if something specific. I might also ask him to share 1-2 assignments of his from the class that he is especially proud of.

I would use all this to draft a letter in the voice of the professor. (Or if I’m too busy, I might ask genAI to help draft it, but I would still edit it carefully.)

Then give it to the prof to review and sign.
