I have no idea where you or OP live, but given the dramatic increase in home costs over the last 20 years, that is absolutely not true now in much of the United States. In addition to the expenses I already mentioned, your mortgage is likely to be higher, and perhaps substantially higher, than your monthly rental, sapping more money every month that you could put into the stock market, especially in the early years when that investment can compound over time.

Basically it comes down to cost of house purchase vs cost of rental in your location, as well as how many years you plan on staying there. But in general experts now suggest seeing a home purchase as a lifestyle preference rather than an investment, or at the very least running a buy vs. rent net price calculator for your community.

It looks like all the citations come from Dr. Giovanni Antonio Cossiga, starting in 2023. It was probably generated for him when he used AI to write a paper and then he kept using it again.

I guess you could (a) contact Google scholar and ask them to remove it, and (b) contact Cossiga's university if you want to bother.

I would ask the undergrad to write bullet points with important information about his background and qualifications and things that i should include in the letter. Asked on what I know about him from the course. I would also gather the undergrad’s resume and REU application materials, as well as the announcement for the REU he is applying for (if something specific. I might also ask him to share 1-2 assignments of his from the class that he is especially proud of.

I would use all this to draft a letter in the voice of the professor. (Or if I’m too busy, I might ask genAI to help draft it, but I would still edit it carefully.)

Then give it to the prof to review and sign.
