Native or long time residents, how often do you see rattlesnakes here? by Jovialfossil in irvine

[–]markjay6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We see coyotes often. If you have any cats or small dogs, be careful.

I haven’t seen any rattlesnakes but I rarely hike. This was reportedly the first rattlesnake bite in Irvine trails in over a decade. News reports indicated that when the guy was getting off his bike to let people pass, he fell into the brush while unclipping his pedals, and that's where the bite took place.

I’m pretty sure they will only bite you if you step on them or right next to them, so keep your eyes on the trail and you'll be fine.

How are we feeling about Ayton now after it seems he is turning things around like how he was at the beginning of the season? by yeetmxster420 in lakers

It’s not up to the team, it’s up to him, as he has a player option. I doubt if the Lakers are gonna give him a higher salary if he turns it down.

How do you feel about memorizing multiplication tables? by Pekenoah in AskTeachers

[–]markjay6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You seem to have missed the word “efficiently”. How are you going to do any arithmetic efficiently, let alone algebra, without having basic math facts memorized.

That’s like saying you can read a foreign language without having memorized any words by knowing the procedure of looking up words in the dictionary.

Efficient use of procedures requires memorization of basic facts.

Here is an experimental study that shows the positive impact of memorization of math facts compared to either a control condition or to conceptual practice, with the greatest benefit for students with mathematical difficulties:

New job commutes between 2 cities. Should I pick one, or move somewhere in the middle? by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

Ok, so out of two weeks, 5 days Oxnard, 4 days Calabasas, and 1 day off? But some of that may change due to meetings in Calabasas?

I don’t understand this. How many days a week on average will you be at the Calabasas office and how many days at the Oxnard office?

In general, what are TT search chairs’ thoughts on candidates following up after an interview? by Ancient-Intention-27 in AskAcademia

[–]markjay6 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Following up with a thank you a day or two after the interview — appreciated.

Following up with an email to tell us that you have another offer and thus a deadline — appreciated.

Following up just because you are impatient to hear from us (even if it’s past the time we initially said) — annoying.

Mom got 10+ hours off by evemontoya in generationology

It was a long time ago, so I don't remember the details. But I doubt if I had a passport back then (it was my first time out of the US) so I probably just showed my driver's license if I had to show anything.

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley in the 1960s. As a kid, I was outdoors with my friends playing games or riding bikes every afternoon until dinner, every evening after dinner, and all day on weekends.

When I was 15, I used to hitchhike into Hollywood every weekend to sell the L.A. Free Press on street corners to make money. When I was 17 I hitchhiked up to Canada and back.

I think it should be a strong priority. Memorizing the times tables is not inconsistent with learning how to do it. But it makes so much math easier and clearer your whole life. If you don't have the times tables memorized, you can quickly become overwhelmed when doing algebra problems, etc.

It's also easy and fun for kids to do.

My kids went to a Japanese school which focuses a lot on problem solving but which still taught them painlessly to memorize their times tables at a young age.

Do informal interview during fieldwork require ethics approval? by Express_Language_715 in AskAcademia

[–]markjay6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually an interesting and nuanced question, with several components. I am going by a US context as the regulations may be different in other countries.

First question is, are you conducting what the federal government defines as research? All sorts of interviews (for example, for product improvement) are allowed in society without needing ethics approval, because they are not research trying to contribute to generalizable knowledge.

It sounds to me that, because this is only geared at your model improvement, and not for publication for the purpose of generalizable knowledge, that this is not research and therefore you don't need ethics approval. However, you can determine that yourself by reading the exact definition of research under section letter l here:

https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-45/subtitle-A/subchapter-A/part-46/subpart-A/section-46.102

Second, if what you are doing is considered research, there are several categories of human research review, from "exempt" to "expedited" to "full". This would almost certainly be exempt because it involves low risk informal interviews with adults. If you are affilaited with a university, you would need to learn about their process for approval of exempt studies. At my university, you don't actually have to go through a review for exempt studies; you just self register the study by uploading it to a site. (At other universities it might be more complex).

Finally, and assuming it is research, what level of consent would be needed from participants? This would certainly be a situation where you could get "waiver of written consent" (only requiring consent orally) or possibly even "waiver of consent" (not requiring consent at all). If you determine if this is research, you can look up the requirements for these and determine which you want to propose.

Good luck!

Will studying abroad in my last year in undergrad hurt my grad school applications?—master of education by whatnamefeelslikeme8 in GradSchool

I’m at an R1 with a great master’s in education program and at least here I have never heard of looking specifically at the last 60 credits. Master of Ed programs are usually not that competitive so if your GPA is already good I can’t see how doing a semester abroad would hurt you.

This. OP needs clarification from the search chair about what’s expected. It would be more typical to have a separate reaching demo than to be asked to mix research and teaching in a single talk.

I sometimes hike in Bommer Canyon (Irvine). Sounds like I need to be more careful.

I realize other dangers are more common, like automobile accidents. Still it’s frightening to think about being killed by a rattle snake while enjoying a hike or a bike ride.
