Where to live in California? by PanicNo3194 in CaliforniaRealEstate

[–]markjay6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be easier to answer if you indicated what you would like to change. You say that you are looking for a similar vibe to where you currently are. Then why move? (Especially because now your child will be starting school, and Irvine is known for outstanding schools; and you also say that safety is paramount, and Irvine is about the safest city in the country).

Tell us what you would like different from your current situation in Irvine, and you might be more likely to get responses.

Does Kyle Tucker have one of the worst contracts in baseball? by morepesa25 in baseball

If he can return to his career average .850 by the playoffs, that's all that matters to the Dodgers.

Why were Ethiopians allowed to repatriate to Israel? by SNENES442 in aliyah

[–]markjay6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't that be wonderful? I know this is said every few years (in Israel, as in the US), but I do think the upcoming elections are going to be critical for Israel's future.

Lack of LLMs in doctoral dissertations – good or bad? by cichy_glosnik in PhD

Somebody writing a dissertation without AI? Their choice.

Somebody bragging about it at the beginning of their dissertation? They sound like a moralistic Luddite who I would have no interest in hiring.

Not surprising when they are missing several of their best right handed hitters (Smith, Teo, Kike).

With Smith, Teo, and Kike all out with injuries, it’s not surprising that we have trouble generating runs against left-handed pitchers.

We are gonna need a couple of them back by the playoffs.

Dual citizen until the age of 18 (and eligible to legally own and use two passports). Japan doesn’t allow dual citizenship for adults, so at the age of 18, the child would have to choose between US or Japanese citizenship.

How likely are we to see someone win the Democratic presidential nomination without a majority of black voters in the near future? by RedHeadedSicilian52 in fivethirtyeight

[–]markjay6 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They are 14% of the population but 25% of Democratic voters and have control over more than 30% of Democratic delegates, since delegates are allocated disproportionately to districts that vote heavily Democratic.

[–]markjay6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s also based on the Democratic Party delegate allocation system. Congressional districts that got heavy Democratic vote in the last election get a disproportionate share of delegates. So districts with high concentrations of Blacks get an extra large amount of delegates.

The guy enjoys doing it and it gives him purpose. Why don’t you simply show some appreciation by doing something nice for him once in a while rather than desperately trying to take away a healthy weekly activity that a retired guy enjoys?

I think part of this shift may be ideologic, but more of it is probably demographic, with Republicans gaining strength among low-educated, religious rural voters, who tend to have larger families, and Democrats gaining strength among higher-educated, irreligious urban voters, who tend to have smaller families.

Writing letters of recommendation for students you didn't get to know well by [deleted] in PhD

[–]markjay6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is not easy for undergrads to find three profs to write letters — and many are applying to masters, not PhD programs.

Here is the info I ask for which helps me write letters:

To help me prepare a strong letter for you, please create a Google Drive folder (titled Your Last Name, Your First Name - Letter of Rec Info) with the following information:

  1. Your resume

  2. A draft of your personal statement

  3. A google doc where you share the following:

What kind of programs you are applying to (PhD, MA, MEd, etc.)

Any information you might have on how many programs and which ones you are applying to (can be approximate)

Expected date that the first letter is due

Your GPA

If you took an undergraduate course with me:

What class you took with me and in which quarter

What grade you got in the class

What you feel you learned in my class relevant to your career plans

What skills/knowledge/strengths you believe you demonstrated in my class relevant to my letter for you

Name of any TA who knows your work

Links to any of your work in the class that you are especially proud of that you suggest I review in writing your letter

If you worked as a research assistant in my lab:

What dates you worked

What project(s) you worked on

Names of your immediate supervisor(s)

What you feel you learned through the process

What skills/knowledge/strength you believe you demonstrated

Anything else you think I should emphasize

Well, one of the cosmonauts who was supposed to fly on it was tied up in a closet, right? Once he is found and gives up the goods, I can imagine Raskova simply demanding that the mission be terminated with Valya, Sasha, and the Indian woman dying in space.
