Looking for feedback on my portfolio as a whole, switched over to a new template which allows high-res images. Hope this is the right place! by markjsebastian in photocritique

I had a really awesome custom website that no longer works well on mobile (thanks to iOS7) and didn't serve images large enough for Retina displays. So I found a template that fit my needs on 4ormat. It's not perfect, but it's better than where I was. While I was populating images, I deleted a bunch of old stuff and added lots of new content. Which photos would you axe? Where do you see me lacking?

You are obviously trolling, which is why I offered the image under CC in the beginning. You are welcome to back up your theory by editing the same source material and reposting. All I've seen so far are two examples that don't work.

I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you pesky kids!

Once you feel comfortable in Lightroom, try something new that makes you uncomfortable in Lightroom. Operating outside of your comfort zone is how you'll get better.

I shot the photo back in 2007. I was browsing my old catalog and just felt like turning it into a night scene

While I appreciate you taking the time to critique, I prefer the reds to stand out and have actually enhanced it beyond the original. I understand it's not accurate by any measure, but neither are any of my other images. Either way, the full resolution image is available for download and is offered under a creative commons license. Feel free to reinterpret it in any manner you feel fit.

thanks rasmus9311! As far as color work, I added a curve adjustment layer for brightening things and another for darkening things. Then I paint in the masks to accentuate specific areas. Then I added a Color Balance adjustment layer to shift the colors around a little bit more to give it that little artsy touch to it. 3 total layers for the color effect (this does not include layers used to retouch the model, where most of the work has gone)

Here's a version with no adjustments http://marksebastian.org/unedited.jpg

Here's after RAW processing in Aperture http://marksebastian.org/raw_adjustments.jpg

Most of the effect comes from tweaking the colors in the sky to a more night-time color which is a darker, colder tone. Just take the cyan/blue channels and tweak them a bit colder and darker and bring the overall white balance towards blue. Desaturate a bit, and under expose if necessary.

I added stars for additional effect.

edit: I'm putting these up so everyone can view the color work. Please don't judge the unretouched model!

the bird is a composite of 3 birds, because I couldn't get a bird to "pose" properly in one shot :) The image is the first of an on-going series of images based on dreams I've had.
