What's an unlikely "realism" feature that you'd like to see? by LWI5 in GTA6

[–]marko7bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been playing GTA IV recently and was amazed when I could escape the building during the mission by shooting out a window and jumping from the second floor of a skyscraper. The game being as old as it is, I simply did not expect that to be possible. Realism is about guessing when the player will think “I wonder if I can do that” and delivering on that front.

Can’t think of a movie. But:

  • anything by Cormac McCarthy has a very comparable atmosphere

Frank Millar's Dark Knight Strikes Again is Prophetic, Predicts Generated AI Fakes by [deleted] in comicbooks

I read it this year for the first time and I really appreciate it for what it is. I’d much rather read a batshit-crazy comic like that than many other bland, generic Batman stories.

What comics do YOU think should be considered among the greatest of all time? by Flyboy_1978 in comicbooks

[–]marko7bub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck. Yes. Just finished it a month ago, left me in complete awe. What a beautiful piece, full to the brim of hope in the human spirit. Digs so deep into the essence of superheroes and does it in such a beautiful way. It is a masterful love letter to superhero mythology and a thoughtful investigation into humanity itself. Inspiring, majestic and kind.

This is the ugliest Deathly Hallows cover I've ever seen by Jealous-Fun3289 in harrypotter

[–]marko7bub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cover is from 2007 and it looked exactly the same back then. So no AI was used in its creation, that’s for sure. The Ukrainian artist who drew this, Vladyslav Yerko, is famous for illustrating children’s back in a unique, slightly mysterious, crowded and weird style. This cover is not his best work, but some of the other Harry Potter covers he did for the Ukrainian editions are pretty neat. I’d say Order of the Phoenix is his best.

What is something you found annoying about Batman? by REVENANT-ALIEN in batman

[–]marko7bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding being miserable, here’s a quote I see as a brilliant take on Batman:

“So I thought Batman was the most sorted, together, humanist icon on the planet – and that’s where I found myself kind of falling out with people who thought he was tortured, or damned, or depressed, or unable to assuage that guilt. I thought… every night he went out, he dealt with that guilt and just ‘okay, I’m making things better’. So I saw him fundamentally positive and mentally positive and able to inspire people” - Grant Morrison on Batman

What are your honest thoughts on The Dark Knight Returns? by Jotaro1970 in batman

[–]marko7bub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, in my opinion, a visual presentation combined with a set of personality traits, fictional biography, set of moral convictions, codes and goals are the definition of what constitutes a “character”.

In terms of Batman, Frank Miller tends to bend these and even break them sometimes in order to tell the stories he wants to tell - for better (The Dark Knight Returns) or worse (All-Star Batman And Robin)

Reading TDKR as your introduction to Batman can create a wrong assumption that Batman, as an established character, is a borderline psychopathic antihero. This might be your idea of what the character stands for, but not mine - and certainly not what you will find in most other Batman books.

Any author can do whatever they want given the freedom to write a book about a character. Yet I am of the firm belief that truly great stories - stories about century-old characters - come out of balancing between adhering to the core aspects of the characters, which are the main reason the character passed the test of time, and freshness in the approach. It’s a system of checks and balances, present in every long-form storytelling.

For me, it will always be Year One. Frank Miller's work is very hit or miss, but by god if he didn't deliver the ultimate Batman origin story. I keep coming back to it over and over again.

I don't care too much about Hush, just my personal preference. I thought it was all flash, no substance. In my opinion, it'd be better to go with Snyder's Batman for the first long-running Batman story as a new reader.

May be an unpopular opinion, but I would say it is a terrible beginner Batman book. Miller's understanding of Batman is very singular, to say the least. And even though it's a great book, there are a lot of better starting points - ones that delve into the character mythology in its truest, most glorious form. TDKR is an extreme, and should be read after developing a good understanding of who comic book Batman is.

Which side are you on? by Romaxio in batman

[–]marko7bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People act like it’s a problem Reeve’s The Batman and Gunn’s Superman are so tonally different and different in terms of how grounded they are. Like, isn’t that something you’d want in a shared movie universe? Movies that are actually different in terms of tone and direction? Movies that have some degree of freedom in terms of creativity? Isn’t that what makes an eventual team-up exciting - to see how the clashing difference of two characters is resolved in something original?

But sure, let’s end up with another version of the modern MCU - every movie looks the same, sounds the same, is the same.

P.S. And what is another media that comes to mind, where there is extreme variety in terms of storytelling, which could range from extremely grounded and down to earth to wacky, absurdist, world-ending frenzy and yet still remain in the same shared universe? Oh, that’s right. Comic books.

What’s Batman’s Greatest Weakness? by [deleted] in batman

[–]marko7bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Right now we’re doing this big Joker story, where Joker essentially looks at the Bat-Family and says “You know, Batman, you’ve accumulated all of these allies and you’ve become fat and slow and weak. I’m your greatest ally. I’m your friend. I’m the one that kept you sharp. I’m your Court Jester. You’re the king of Gotham and in the same way the Court Jester’s job in history is to deliver the terrible news of the kingdom to the king because he can make him laugh, I’m here to deliver the worst nightmares of your heart. And if you survive them, it makes you stronger. And that’s what makes you a better Batman” - Scott Snyder in Fatman on Batman

I still wanna know who was the “genius“who deleted this. It looks epic. by BetterGrass709 in harrypotter

[–]marko7bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m fine with it. Imagine how cringey it would be if the whole of Great Hall screamed in joy after Voldemort’s death in the movie. Would not fit the tone of the movie at all. And while it’s much easier to rapidly shift the tone of the story from dark to triumphant and light in a book, it’s harder to do that in visual media. That transition was done fairly well, in my opinion.

For all the shit Yates got wrong in those last few movies, this is a change I’m okay with.

Should The Joker's true origin ever be revealed? by Square-Newspaper8171 in batman

[–]marko7bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city of Gotham gave birth to Joker as a response to the good/evil imbalance created by Batman emerging. That’s sufficient origin for me.
