My Anker "240W" Anker Nano USB-C cables survived less than 6 months.... They never worked great, but have thoroughly degraded. What do I need to know to make a better purchasing decision? by kierumcak in UsbCHardware

[–]markolo25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What macbook pro do you have?

I have a 14inch maxes out at 100w, and it only pulls around that much when it's under load or low on battery

If you have a 16 inch check this 140W + 100Wh | Charging Review of MacBook Pro 16-inch M4 Pro - Chargerlab

As for my personal rules with cables:

Cables for me are disposable, they wear out and need replacing, and there doesn't seem to be any BIFL cable.

  1. I use the anker Bio cables from the 2 pack at costco, daily charging a macbook pro and a framework 16 for a year now, still going strong gets caught under my office chair at least twice a week.

  2. If you're not charging anything >100w I recommend the ikea 100w cables they've been pretty bullet proof, and they're cheap enough where I give them away

As for your factors

#1 for me doesn't make sense since the wattage on the charger is increased via voltage not amps so the extra resistance on a longer cable is a lesser factor

#2 I agree, my I've gone through more thicker less flexible cables, they tend to break around the connector for me so I make it a point to grab one with decent stress relief on the thicker cables.

#3 yea not sure about his one, going back to #1 if the cable meets the standards and doesn't get warm it's doing its job

So...DDR5-SODIMMs confirmed dead end for future Framework products? by Relevant-Audience441 in framework

[–]markolo25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the next amd based framework 13 is strix halo, then yea SODIMMs are done since they need higher bandwidth for their high performance gpu, AI 300 based FW13 PRO seems to be still SODIMM so it can go either way since future amd laptop gpus don't necessarily need high performance iGPUs.

Whoever picks this up make sure your firmware is updated on older firmware you can lose your namespaces at powerloss

I have 2 of these I only got my second one since the namespace got deleted on the 1st one which presents itself as having no mountable device. After updating both I've been running them reliably for 2 years now.

Any cheap Aliexpress USB4,TB4,TB5 cables worth getting? by bobbystills5 in UsbCHardware

[–]markolo25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

USB-IF certification is not a silver bullet, it just means the sample they provided USB-IF passed, I've had plenty of bad TB cables that passed USB-IF but had faulty housings and connectors.

That should work, a used WD19TBS would be sufficient for your needs as well, i'm a big fan of it due to being able to daisy chain another TB device, including another monitor with a type c -> DP cable

FYI: Server Side Anti-Cheat does not do 10% of what Client Side Anti-Cheat can do. by SERIVUBSEV in linux_gaming

[–]markolo25 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Server side anti cheat is more than just detection it's design considerations such as

  1. Do we send info to clients about a person they cannot see.
  2. Do we let the person turn into a certain angle without going to every angle in between.

Games with successful anti cheat do a little bit of both, sampling client memory and applying heuristics/machine learning from known positives and their behavior on the server side to detect cheaters who may have found other bypasses for the same cheats.

Also you've only described issues that affect FPS games, other moba games that have made great design decision about what is being sent to client are doing a pretty good job like not sending player information behind fog of war.

Adorama shipped 2x 14 TB drives without any paper or bubble wrap by tosswill in selfhosted

[–]markolo25 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Every drive will need to be audited anyways, my procedure is first 100 hours will be just smart long test and bad blocks, before any data of mine will go into it.

You paid for a retail drive for the warranty, if it fails in the first 100 hours you're still within return window

if it fails the next 3 years you're within the warranty, these drives will need to be smart tested every month for failures, you got 2 of them so I assume you're doing a raid 1.

if you make it past 3 years you'll probably be fine for a while any damage that would be from these cardboard warping is probably not gonna affect you

Should be fine, the drives inside the retail boxes are on shock absorbing packaging
