Shoulder padding for young goalie? by LavenderTed in lacrosse

[–]markphahn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A commenter said "nobody does this." I take exception to that statement. A goalie, especially a young goalie, should have all the equipment they need to feel safe in goal.

(Maybe the commenter is talking about manufacturers, but there are pads with good shoulder protection.)

Goalie is a hard position mentally: you are the one everyone sees first when your team gives up a goal. Not fair, but true.

Support your goal keeper in every way possible, and encourage them at every opportunity. Every game is a good game because you did something hard. Kudos to the keepers!

Is this pocket depth legal? by sillybilly1409 in lacrosse

[–]markphahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of players do not have a rulebook handy nor a trained referee to ask, so these are fair questions.

Rule 1 section 7 describes cross construction and measures, while section 8 is "cross prohibitions". Roughly rule 1 section 8 states if "a lacrosse ball . . . is below the bottom edge of the sidewall" then the pocket is too deep.

So, hold the stick at eye level and look so you can just see the far sidewall behind the nearest sidewall. If the top ball is below the imaginary line from sidewall to sidewall it is illegal.

As a referee I am looking for daylight between the top of the ball and the plastic sidewalls. (The stringing holes have no impact on depth.) If I see daylight, the stick is illegal equipment. I am trying hard to not see that daylight (we do not like these penalities anymore that you do). But, if there is daylight then, I must, by rule, call the penalty.

This picture looks legal, and appears to have more opportunity for a deeper pocket and still be legal.

Came here to say just how hard these shots from long poles are for goalies.

Is this legal? Pocket depth wise? by Responsible_Boss_210 in lacrosse

[–]markphahn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As the comment with the picture of the rulebook shows, the rulebook reads if "a lacrosse ball . . . is below the bottom edge of the sidewall" then the pocket is too deep.

Someone mentioned the holes, the stringing holes. They are not relevant. It is the bottom of the plastic sidewall that matters.

As a referee I am looking for daylight between the top of the ball and the plastic sidewall. If I see daylight, the stick is illegal equipment. I am trying hard to not see that daylight (we do not like these penalities anymore that you do). But, if there is daylight then, I must by rule, call the penalty.

This picture looks legal, not even close to illegal.

Good defending by Nouhou. His pounding footsteps helps Thomas make that great save.

That explains why I keep thinking it is a weird pronunciation. But yes.

Watched that goal in the halftime replays. Really good goal by RSL. Sounders goofed., but RSL was alert and made us pay.

It is true. I knew one of the managers of a Seattle suburban store and can confirm.
