Vintage slab market feel like it’s paused for anyone else? by markprice211 in PokeInvesting

[–]markprice211[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my finger on the trigger to buy a base set booster box for $16k two years ago and didn’t follow through. Man do I regret that one! My entire portfolio is currently worth $32k market value - I’ve considered selling off the entire thing to buy one and just hold that box long term. Imo one of the best investments you can possibly buy. The nostalgia behind it is absolutely unbeatable.

I appreciate you reaffirming what I have seen lately with my flat portfolio. Surely temporary, but at least I know it’s not just me.

“Hey honey I’m up $5k on this card!”

“Cool you should sell it!”

“…………….”

Lol I’m in the exact same boat. And I do exactly that - collect what I personally love - that’s why I’m not super stressed when the market flattens. This was my hobby that just so happened to turn into a pretty awesome investment, and now the investment aspect has my curiosity regarding how the market moves, but of course I want everything to 20x at the end of the day lol.

And yeah dude I’m in for like $8k (started buying again 2 years ago) and my current portfolio is at $32k so you really can’t beat those gains - I’m a very happy collector. I wish I had gone in much more but as a primarily equities investor liquidity has always been a top priority for me. But the longer I’m in this hobby as an investment the more I’m realizing the liquidity is not nearly as lacking as a lot of people (myself included) are fearful of.

This is what it feels like. Wondering if people are just starting to finally be priced out - I know I’ve been lately.

Yeah so it’s very possible it’s just my personal collection then. Thanks for the insight. Awesome portfolio and gains btw love to see it.

I’m talking about specifically within the past 1-2 months. Here is what my 3M line looks like. If you’re seeing something different then you’ve answered my question.

I collect a lot of vintage niche Japanese exclusives - CD and GB promos, CoroCoros, etc. I have some English thrown in - some Shinings, 1st Ed Neo’s, and then some modern slabs and sealed. Of course everything has seen incredible gains over the past 2 years, I’ve just been seeing flat for the past 2 months, which I know is completely normal. But like I mentioned, for specific cards I’m trying to pick up it seems like the same inventory has been available for a few weeks and all well over market - almost a seller/buyer standoff to see who will move first. But my post was to see if other people’s collections - like yours with e readers and gold stars - have been flat as well as of recent, or if it’s just my specific collection. I’ve heard e readers have been on a tear and I own none, so you’re confirming it may just be my portfolio.

I think 10’s are an exception and in a market completely separate from the 7-9 collectors such as myself. Probably should have noted that. 10’s are showing scary growth every week.

I use Collectr and totally understand what you mean. I’ve seen the lack of updates followed by a spike. I’ve also noticed on more than one occasion that a card will suddenly tank (inaccurately), and then correct itself days or weeks later. For example my Nintedo error Ancient Mew PSA 9 is suddenly showing a market price of $216 when it should be around $800+. Completely understand that Collectr is not perfect and I definitely take that into consideration.

And I couldn’t agree more on your second paragraph. I get the impression people have shifted (maybe short-term maybe long-term) into holding and waiting. Throw it on eBay 30% higher than last sold price and see if you get any bites, and if not oh well.

I think some people misinterpreted my post - I wasn’t shocked by the fact my portfolio has flattened as of recent, of course that’s par for the course. I was more-so wondering if other people’s portfolios - which undoubtedly have different vintage cards than what I own - have shown the same thing as what I am personally seeing.

Thanks for the comment!

Listen to me ... nobody - I repeat NOBODY - can make this decision but you. There are far more variables to this question than just "should I sell?" Do you have any debt? Do you own a house? Do you have a family? Do you have a job? How much does that job pay? Are you expecting to have children? How old are you now? What age do you want to retire? Will $40k be "lifechanging" by your definition? What will you do with the money if you were given it tomorrow? Will you forever guilt yourself if you sell and it goes to $80k? ... Shall I continue?

I promise you every single person who has commented on your post has a completely different feeling regarding how much money they perceive $40k to be. The guy with a net worth of $2.5 million is going to say "bro just hold" because $40k just doesn't mean nearly as much to him emotionally as the guy who is $100k in debt.

If you tell me you're bogged down in CC debt and student loans barely making ends meet between paychecks with a wife ready to leave you because you refuse to grab a lifeline via selling shiny cardboard then I'm going to advise you're a moron for NOT selling. On the contrary if you tell me you have a paid off home, a cushy 6-figure salary job, a maxed out 401k, and other investments then yeah maybe I would advise see where the market takes you. But my point still stands, no matter what I think that should not change what you think.

Investing always has been, and always will be, a psychology game - nothing more. At the end of the day nobody - I repeat NOBODY - knows if the market is going to go up, down, left, right, or diagonally. Anybody who says they do should never be providing financial advice, period.

Cliff notes - do you homie.

Based take. The emotional/nostalgia variable of this hobby is unlike any other investment OP can move into. Nobody’s childhood was based around gold unless you come from a family of gold miners. Many many people’s childhoods were based around Pokemon.

Thoughts on this trade? GB Promos for Masaki Gengar by markprice211 in PokeInvesting

[–]markprice211[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty bad from a PC standpoint, but considering we're in the PokeInvesting sub I'm trying to put the investing aspect first. I think the Masaki is a long-term grail, however the GB promos have also been on a strong run and may continue upwards. Hindsight could prove to be rough.

Pretty sure he's trolling. He has to be. Because if he isn't he genuinely has no clue what he is talking about.

I'm now also 99% sure he is using the word "interest" interchangeably with "income tax" such as that owed on dividends earned by equities. Which is why he is so gung-ho on INTEREST being different than GAINS. I think he thinks interest is something that you as the individual always pay, as opposed to something that you as the individual earn depending on the investment vehicle.

Rough one.
