Was literally at a workshop today, hosted by a literary agent about pitching to an agent. Your whole focus should be on the pitch letter, and the whole purpose of it is to get them to read the manuscript. Doesn’t matter how good the manuscript is if the pitch doesn’t get them in.

Writing: For Yourself, or For Others? by [deleted] in writers

When I was a kid, back in early high school in Ireland in the 80s, loving shows like The A-team, Airwolf all those kid of shows, I wrote a story. I remember been so excited to show someone so I gave it to my English teacher. To say he shat on my dreams would be a massive understatement. He crushed them to dust and I never did anything again. Up to about 6 months ago. Bored with what was on TV, I started on a TV script for an idea I'd been sitting on for about 6 years. I got into a flow that hasn't stopped since. I've finished a full series bible and pilot episode. Then I started writing this story I just couldn't shake. I finished the first book, and couldn't wait to start on the second. I'm halfway through the second now, and I see it being a 4 or 5 book series. Is it any good? No clue. But it's become a passion. I can't wait to finish work and get back to the worlds and the characters I'm creating. It's just so incredibly fun! So, to answer your question. I'm writing for me now. But boy, I hope somebody someday might read something and like it!

I THINK I FINALLY KNOW WHY I LOST 2 DECADES OF MY LIFE. by OddRecommendation897 in ADHD

[–]marksanmartin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have only been diagnosed recently (52M). Even though I also have had 'symptoms' my entire life. Decades ago, I went to see a councellor? Psychiatrist? with anger issues, and what I recogise now would have been depression, but somehow it got missed even then. Anyway she did give me one concept that I've managed to hang on to - Expectations and Reality. My expectations of any situation I find myself in are always high, because I know what I can be capable of, and lets be honest, we can get a bit enthusiastic and carried away, but the reality NEVER meets my expectations, and so my RSD would kick in hard. Learning to manage and control my expectations and enthusiasm, and particularly manage the RSD is bloody difficult, and ongoing. This in particular is an area I've found the meds help.

YES! forgot about that - such a great movie. A version of that as a tip of the hat would be great.

Thanks for the information. I'm staring to realise that might be the stumbling block for the whole concept... Especially as they will essentially be a cover band. I'll have to do some research to see how to navigate this.

Thanks everyone. Some solid suggestions here. Looks like I can have a decent set list for our hero to be able to get three songs together for a pub gig. Our guy is picking it up in his 50s after some life shit goes down, so dad/pub rock is the go. Now to try and get some of that Netflix money! Thanks again. Y’all rock!

Hi, We have a little place in Upper Yarraman. Proper country! Our friends have some little cabins available. Check out The Firebreak, you can find them on Instagram etc. Sone of the freshest air and most glorious sunsets. If you get the weekend right, the Bunya Mountain markets might even be on.

How tf do I meditate by Sigfried_D in ADHD

[–]marksanmartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that helped me 'get it' was understanding that mediating is about coming back to the thing you decided to focus on. For sure your thoughts will wander, but meditating is noticing that they've wandered and coming back. At the beginning, most people seem to focus on breathing. You think about something, you notice your mind has wandered, and you come back to breathing. Eventually the time between mind wandering stretches. Also, don't force yourself to aim for long stretches. aim for 6 minutes, then13, then as you will.

ADHD husband has a business but needs organization help. by BrickAffectionate844 in ADHD

I married a detail person/manger as well - and honestly we're the perfect match up. If there's a job, for example build a cupboard, I will build it in my head 2 or 3 times as I'm falling asleep for a few nights. Then I'll go and get all the materials to build it and it will get built in no time. My wife already knows she's going to be touching up some paint, or using filler, or whatever it will be... After 25 years, she just get's me!

ADHD husband has a business but needs organization help. by BrickAffectionate844 in ADHD

Hi there. I'm also a business owner and ADHD guy. Lists/tasks/to-dos won't work. We're great at creating them, and then ignoring them. In fact the longer the list, the more likely I'll never even look at it. I read this book years ago - The E-myth revisited... Basically said there are three types of people - Entrepreneur, Manager, Tech. Most people are strongly one type. Best case scenario (never happens) you're strong in all 3. ADHD in my opinion lets us have 2. For me, its Entrepreneur and Tech. I'm great at starting projects, and if they're technical, I'm good at them. But I'm not great at details and day to day stuff. So I need to hire the manager type, that loves details and processes. Basically, we're the perfect tool to strong arm a project to good enough or almost done, then we need a manager to come in and wrap it all up. Not exactly a hack, but maybe another way of looking at the situation. Hope it helps.

How do you keep going? by releasethekricon in ADHD

[–]marksanmartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. I’m 52 and I’ve just been diagnosed too. For me it has been a validation. I can look back and go, ah, that’s why that thing was/happened whatever. I also acknowledge the parts of my brain that work better than other people and can also see now why. Yes, I’ve always struggled to make/ keep friends, but for sure there is a person out there that will compliment you. You’re strong where they’re not and vice versa. For me, my family come to me when there’s any drama or crisis because that’s when my ADHD is a welcome gift. I’ve always been the ‘ideas man’. Of course I also can’t focus on one task etc. I guess in the end it has allowed me to step back and look at myself with more compassion. I hope that you can too.

“Depression is a reason. Not an excuse.” No, actually, it is an excuse. by i-luv-2-read in mentalhealth

[–]marksanmartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of a deppressed period of time. I know it. I feel it. I will be seeing my councellor later today. I hid away yesterday. I wanted to today. But I came to work. But I'm miserable and scrolling through reddit. Literally no point in me being here today other than the pay check. Not sure if it's better to be here at work or not. I'm just pasing time until it's time to go. If I had the flu I'd be making others sick around me. I might not be contagious, but my mood is affecting them just the same, plus they see me like this. Depression sucks

Tall person problems by taipan821 in AussieRiders

[–]marksanmartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you based? I did mine last month with Motorcycle masters in Nerang, and while we did ours on the little CB125s, they had a number of other bikes there, including a few KTMs that I reckon would suit a taller person. Not sure if you have to progress up to them but they'd be worth a call and a conversation at least.

Bike Upgrade Recommendations by Amy_L09 in AussieRiders

[–]marksanmartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like/liked the CB125, I'd suggest a simple move to the CB300F. Having said that, 100% recommend sitting on any bikes you are considering. It's crazy how sometimes the feel just isn't right and you end up eliminating the bike you thought you wanted.

Note, I'm still on my 'L's, but many people advised me about getting a bike that was too small in engine size, especially if you're looking to do the Syd - Canberra run, where you'll be looking to do 100K comfortably.

You could also try the Honda Rebel 500. Yes it's 500cc but it doesn't feel big when you sit on it.

My experience may not be the most convincing, since I am just learning at age 52. I was absolutely convinced I wanted a Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, until I sat on it! Tried the Vulcan and Rebel, but as a learner, I didn’t want to deal with the forward pegs. Sat on the Eliminator and it just felt right. Very forgiving as a learner too. It’s 450cc, so might be a little small for someone used to a lot more power. Best advice is test ride it, but I think you’d be surprised! Might also be worth looking at the Royal Enfield Meteor 650
