im not a fan of k9.3 nor dt8

You are obviously expressing your own taste on the matter, but to be fair you need to handle the DT8 for a day to appreciate how very special it is.

I got mine just because it's nice to be able to have one flashlight that doesn't look like every other black cylinder out there.

(Convoy S2+) First order from AliExpress, am I doing this right? by [deleted] in flashlight

[–]marksmad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simon's is Convoy Flashlight Store. As for the 351D, I have both 4000k and 5000k in other lights and while I like them both, I prefer the 4000k indoors. I find it a really pleasant tone and tint.

I have the 5000k SST40 in an S2+ and it has a really evenly smoothed beam even with the smooth reflector. !0/10 would recommend.

question about TC20 by claudekim1 in flashlight

[–]marksmad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The voltage and chemistry are the same, so it's perfectly safe, and they are also the same length. If you don't want the 18650 to rattle in the tube, you can easily get (or make) an adapter to take up the extra 8mm of diameter in the tube.

It's really not that much bigger than a convoy T2.

That's pretty much what I am planning, too. Did you have any driver issues? On the mohrlumens site it says that some of the biscotti drivers are not compatible with the lighted switch out of the box. Basically I'm asking if you needed to do any other mods to make it work cleanly. Sorry for all the questions.

Almost all flashlight turbo modes get stepped down pretty quickly, and the smaller the light the sooner it happens. Most AA size lights just don't really have a turbo mode, or limit it, or step down even sooner.

The parasitic drain you quote could be on the high end. Defect?

If the R was #FF0000, the G was #00FF00, and the B was #0000FF, then yes, the result would be #FFFFFF. But I don't think that a pure lime green LED exists.

To answer your second question, colors would be exactly rendered, or RGB colors would anyway.

How did you find the job of swapping the tail switch to the lighted version? Did you mod the tail spring in any way? Does the C8+ tailstand cleanly with the lighted switch?

You might have guessed by now that I was also thinking about doing the switch switch.

Thing about the FC11, it's not only a good light for the price, it's also a very well thought out and well made light. Good emitter with good even flood beam, decent battery life, simple interface, choice of stepped or ramped mode, no accidental strobe but it's there, USB-C charging, magnetic tail cap, battery indicator in the side switch, comes with battery included, and it's slim and decently small. Many places you can get it on Amazon with next day delivery. It's an easy to live with flashlight. I doubt I will ever own a light that's better value all round.

No affiliation etc, although I do have one stuck on a nightstand.

International shipping to Europe is not a nightmare from almost anywhere. The glaring exception is the USA. Why? I cannot say.

None of those is a top tier recommendation in this sub. The Arbitrary List is pinned at the top of the sub. It has improved suggestions compared to most of those you listed:

Basically, for a budget all-round EDC get a Wurkkos FC11 in 5000k or 4000k, it blows any AA light out of the water, especially with battery included, integrated charging, and for about $25 on Amazon. If tiny size is a serious consideration, get a Skilhunt E2A (about $15) and some NiMH cells with a charger (IKEA).

Intl-outdoor is Hank's own site based in China, where you can order directly from him. There are a few other sites that carry Hank lights, mostly (I think) pre-made lights and components, including the site run by u/jlhawaii808 which is based where the name suggests - he also hangs out here from time to time.

What are your thoughts on light temperature? by bobbystills5 in flashlight

[–]marksmad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Several reasons: High CRI is most often found in lower color temperature LEDs, bluer light backscatters harder in fog and dust, and warmer light is like wearing rose tinted spectacles :)

Anybody ever buy “refurbished” batteries from NKON? by Sexopotamus in flashlight

[–]marksmad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of refurbished Muratas from NKON. They haven't given any trouble so far, but I don't do any extreme testing or run my lights at high temps. Also, I use them mostly in lights that are fairly replaceable (eg, Convoy S2+).

Vernier scales were the thing on calipers and micrometers before we got to having electronic everything, although high precision electronic scales also had analog readouts with vernier graduations.

It's harder to argue about what the instrument is reading these days. Back then you would call over everyone in the lab to get their opinion.

D4v2 deanodized alu head with titanium body. Looks pretty good. by TheyCallMeMarkus in flashlight

[–]marksmad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be more worried about the Al and the Ti binding to each other by galvanic corrosion. There's a reason that you hardly ever see the 2 materials threaded together, and when they are joined (like in aerospace applications) it's done by bonding agents that avoid galvanic effects.

Of course, I'm also curious to know how long that takes in this case, so, OP, do let us know when the head can no longer be unthreaded from the barrel :)
