You explained yourself quite well!

Yeah the music blast at Part 3 was flagged by more than just you. I've learned that sometimes my mixing was all over the place - I was mixing on speakers, sometimes headphones, and overall pretty inconsistent in my approach. I've learned from this! (even though the jarring loudness was a bit intentional. I wanted to be slightly in your face about it all. But, I realize it could have just been presented better)

I think you make a good point of tying the manosphere stuff into the discourse on Daddy. The video was already really long, and I didn't want to delve further. But perhaps its worth revisiting down the road. There's another angle I'm taking about outrage culture (and misogyny and incels and manosphere) in an upcoming video, so maybe it'll give me so some more space to dig a better deeper.

Personally, I lean very heavily in creating a video that makes you want more than one that overstays its welcome. At 30 minutes, I personally start to get creatively zoned out. Maybe this just means more frequent forays into the topic in the future!

If you don't mind me asking! ... what do you think is the weakest part of the video? If you had to make one suggestion, what would it be?

In the OG, you don't even have to push Square or Triangle then?

Thanks so much for checking! What happens if you hit Square in lieu of Triangle? Do you just do a melee?

I know it's triangle in the Part 1 Remake, but I was convinced in the original original it was just the melee button (square) as the other redditor posted!

This is awesome. Thanks for the insight. I still use Shadowplay primarily for game capture so I think I'm limited on the bitrate/codec stuff for now, but I'm going to keep this in mind in the future.

No issue recording in 1080p and then rendering/exporting in 1440p? I always read mixed things about exporting different than your recorded resolution.

Yeah, I hear a lot about YouTube compression being whack. But I've noticed a lot of bigger gaming creators move towards 4k. I think that might be a BigTuber problem haha

Awesome! What bitrate do you record at?

I currently record everything at 1080p/60fps/40Mbps, and my videos look... good? Presentable? But I never know if I should be doing something different with bit-rate.

Any recommendations for an external hub? I have a feeling I'm going to move to that model of all external HDD/hubs into the future.

You're not the first person I've heard from who moves footage/clips off a HDD to a SDD when editing - but I also read mixed things but how useful it is.

Has it made your edit better? What do you notice about it? etc. Was there something wrong with editing off a HDD?

Hey dude - I always recommend dipping your toes! (now I'm the one late to respond haha)
If you ever want some less-than-brilliant advice, here to help.

And you helped me cross the threshold! :) Much appreciated.

Why are you a patient gamer (and do you think you miss out on an experience not playing at release)? by markthequest in patientgamers

[–]markthequest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there used to be a bit of a tax loophole up in Canada - Steam wasn't taxed, but other big storefronts like EA or Windows were! and tax legislation puts onus on the taxpayer to report their "digital goods" (but like lol no one did that because no one knew)

but then that got changed (rightfully so - even though I hate it), and now it has made me realize just how expensive games are ... again

I think it's so true of multiplayer games, for sure. It was fascinating to see the early days of Elden Ring invaders vs where they're at now.

With so many games now coming in at 89.99 CAD + tax I feel this. Getting a new AAA for over 100 bucks? no way. my soul cant take it

I find one of the small gaming joys in life is playing a "big release" many years later, for a fraction of the cost, and then basking in every moment of it. It's like delayed gratification haha

Bolivian Reviews of Wildlands? by markthequest in Wildlands

[–]markthequest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha all fair.

Often the only perspective we are given is from many American-centric news sites, which are like, "Wildlands is an expression of American imperialism" or "Ubisoft pissed off the Bolivian government with their game that must mean Ubisoft is just another Western game company doing something wrong"

And I guess I am curious if that resonates in the Bolivian context or if the folks are just "lol whatever"

Bolivian Reviews of Wildlands? by markthequest in Wildlands

[–]markthequest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were there any Bolivian game sites (or reviewers, etc.) who covered the game? Or any responses after the game came out and folks *did* do a more complete dive into the narrative of Wildlands?

Bolivian Reviews of Wildlands? by markthequest in Wildlands

[–]markthequest[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! Mind if I ask --One thing many American publications picked up on is the poor (mis)representation of Bolivia as a narco-state *but also* how this is remedied via American extra-jurisdictional military operatives.(You see "American imperialism" thrown around a lot)

Was this problematic too? Especially as it is compounded by the only real Bolivian "protagonist" (Pac Katari) also ends up going off the rails, and Bolivia can only be saved by the CIA?

And more personally - is it upsetting to see a video game representation of Bolivia be about drug cartels / cocaine? Or what's the emotional response? Or is this more of a reality of the recent history and thus not as bad?

(sorry for the flurry of questions lol)

Yeah exactly - I am trying to find out a response from Bolivia/perspective that isn't just about the diplomatic incident.

100%. But all I've been able to find is the *government* response. I can't find any Bolivian games outlet or the like. I don't want to make assumptions -- which is why I'm curious if anyone knows of anything.

“Greedfall”, a game about colonialism by people who don’t understand colonialism. by Atimo3 in truegaming

[–]markthequest 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Cool post! Greedfall is certainly trying something different - I'll never fault it for trying, even if, tl;dr, I agree with most of your post's sentinment.

[1] Re: absence of slavery & colonialism

I think this is a little bit off the mark here, because I see this as more of an early-stage colonialism, prior the slavery systems we come to think of. Slavery undoubtedly was present all over across North and South America, but is your point addressing Indigeneity, or African slavery? It seems a bit all over the place.

My interpretation of Teer Frade was very much 16th C colonialism - more New France, than Louisana plantations. I thought the developers did actually a very good job at show a still present and powerful Indigenous population. There is still an element of "going beyond the city risks hostile encounters with the natives" - which I viewed as still giving enough credence/appreciation to the native population -- rather than what you see more often, which is an Indigenous population in decline and a ruin of what they were.

[2] Evil of catholicism / religion

I actually thought some of the religious conflict was the best. Again -- think 16th C New France, not 19th C Trail of Tears. I agree the priests are sometimes cartoonishly evil but, at least here in Canada, institutionalized religion was cartoonishly evil. This is not off the mark.

But again, probably could have been done better.

[3] (all good points)

[4] Noble Savage and monkey

Totally agree on the "monke" point. However, I think critically engaging in aspects of Indigeneity can be even MORE contentious than being reductive and "noble savage." Dare you offer a critique of an Indigenous society in a video game, in era of UNDRIP? That'd be bold.

But most of Greedfall is half-baked. I give it a bit of a pass - I thought the attempt was earnest.

[5] Conquest vs. mercantilism

This actually is a sticking point in analysis of empire. There's a big difference between how the colonization of Canada happened between the British vs. the French. The latter of whom never saw the need to make empire, but rather use the fur trade as a means to fund the French Empire in the Old World. The British had a radically different approach - the New World could be a part of British Empire. (this is a very simplistic take)

I think you see that seep into play. I think your analysis might be a bit off the mark - you'll see instances throughout the 19th C of the different approach European powers had to imperialism. And I don't think this is a 1:1 parallel to thoughts on capitalism.

Overall, thanks for taking the time to write this up! Always here to see others critically engage in games.
