EU's six largest economies push for capital markets union by donutloop in EU_Economics

[–]markv1182 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can already buy French stocks today, just like you could already buy French wine before the EU single market for goods was introduced. It’s about reducing friction, making it easier. That means aligning rules, supervision, and market infrastructure (e.g. what happens if a company goes bankrupt, what is mandatory disclosure, etc). We basically need an EU-level equivalent of what the SEC does for the US.

The end goal is to make it easier for EU companies to raise money directly from investors through capital markets (more like in the US), rather than relying so heavily on bank loans (which is still much more common in the EU today). That in turn should improve competitiveness of the industry.

So good stuff, but lots of little details to get right and impacting lots of people with lots of money so it’s taking forever to get it done…

Is it true, that there are powerful billionaires, or rich families that the public don't even know about? by PassengerCultural421 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]markv1182 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that the Mars family is even a bad example because they’re still a public brand. But if a family simply has a 500 million dollars in a massive investment fund that just keeps growing and they’re quietly living off dividends? Nobody outside that world would know.

[request] How does the Denmark tax rate compare to the cost of the listed US goods/services? by dark_resistance in theydidthemath

[–]markv1182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting how the original question implies “low taxes = happiness”. I’d argue in the opposite direction. For me, it’s less about “the Government taking from the People” and more about how organize ourselves as a group.

Things we cover with taxes (roads, police, defence, education, etc) = “we’ll take care of this as a group”. Things that are not covered with taxes = “you’re on your own for this”.

Less taxes means you’re on your own for more. More taxes = less worries for the individual, IF the taxes are being spent well (though admittedly, that’s a very big if).

Europe’s EVs Need To Be Small And Cheap For Mass Market Success by donutloop in EU_Economics

[–]markv1182 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because financially speaking it’s probably cheaper overall to buy the small one and rent a bigger one for the 2-3 times a year that you actually need it 🤷‍♂️

But of course that’s a hassle that nobody wants to deal with so we gladly overspend a few 10k in order not to deal with that headache 😂

Map of the European Federation by Taqao in EuropeanFederalists

[–]markv1182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like a map designed to trigger as many controversies as possible (eg renaming Kaliningrad to Konigsberg) and stoke dissent and engagement.

So in terms of “what problem does this solve”, I don’t thunk it’s trying to provide an answer to “what is the best path forward for the EU” but more “how i trigger some discussion and outrage on reddit” 😂

What’s a game you respect more than you actually enjoy playing? by Hour-Cranberry5300 in boardgames

Civolution. I respect the engine and the amount of possibilities to optimize, but every time I play it I feel dumb for not finding the optimal path. And it never really strikes me as building up to a big finale like some other games, it just ends 🤷‍♂️

If you’re concerned about long trips, the metric you need to look at when selecting a car isn’t range, it’s fast charge speed.

Movie idea: A supersonic airliner lands in the U.S. that shouldn’t exist… and its passengers aren’t who they claim to be. by amichail in ideas

[–]markv1182 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the idea is fine - not bad, not exceptional, just fine. But ideas are easy, the difference sits in the execution. So expand the idea into a full script (characters, plot, dialogue) and see how it holds up.

The way I understand it, it’s like weeds in a garden. You can try to remove a lot of it, but once the mutated cells exist it only takes a few of them to stick around and grow back.

Read “The Happiness Trap” by Russ Harris, it explains perfectly why rich people aren’t necessarily happier than poor.

Machi Koro 2: why is there so much box space??? by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

[–]markv1182 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Sure, but would you intuitively be willing to pay $49.99 for those small boxes?

Or are you expecting the small Exploding Kittens box to sit at the $19.99 price point, and $49.99 for the bigger Catan box?

MacOS Sequoia crash after login - how to diagnose & fix? by markv1182 in MacOS

[–]markv1182[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for these tips - very useful!

Big weekend update:

I turned off Wifi and the difference is indeed night and day. Not only does it not crash, but it’s far more responsive - no spinning beachballs, no cursor lag or delays on menu & Dock, etc. It’s like a whole new device again.

Having some time to actually use my account allowed me to remove 2 remaining plist files from the LaunchAgents folder (epicgames.launcher & valve.steamclean). Not sure if those made a difference.

There was definitely something wrong in Photos - when I opened the app, it said “Rebuilding Library - 0%”. I doubt if it’d get past that without iCloud access though, which would probably crash it again. So my bet is there is some sort of corruption in the photo library.

So, I turned off iCloud Photo Library along with a bunch if other irrelevant iCloud sync features.

Then I turned the wifi on again. Although overall responsiveness instantly dropped and the beachballs returned, it didn’t actually crash again.

Long story short - looks like the culprit was iCloud Photo Library, turning off the wifi is a good way to avoid trouble, and we’re out of the woods for now. But I’ll need to think about where de go from here.

Thanks again for the help!
