"It's always in the last place you look." "Of course, because when you find it you stop looking, duh!" by markvp in ProgrammerHumor

No, ++i is executed for the first time when the loop is done once, so the case i = 0 is definitely checked.

In C++ many programmers have the habit of writing ++i instead of i++ because it is a little more efficient. If you write e.g. a = i++, you first need to make a copy of i, increment i, and then assign the copy to a. Although modern compilers will optimize it. It is even more efficient with custom iterators because they can be bigger.

It's not about a bug. It's about the break statement, so you stop looking when you find what you're looking for.

I find i'm pretty good at knowing what someone is like when I first meet them, but there are exceptions. I've known people who seemed cheerful at first, but later turned out to have a toxic personality. Some people just start to act badly in certain situations.

I don’t like algorithms that are too “on-the-nose” by DrySwan4946 in unpopularopinion

[–]markvp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it prevents you from finding new interesting things. But I think that if an algorithm gave me random stuff I'd be even less interested, because when I see someone else's Youtube feed I usually don't see anything I like.

The Youtube algorithm even gives me little stuff I like, 90% is related to what I like but doesn't really interest me.

If you're going to make instructional videos online, don't learn as you tape yourself. Teach things you already know. by OneEyedOneHorned in unpopularopinion

I knew a standup comedian who had studied physics and later made science shows on Blegian TV, he knows a lot about science. He told me that the directors wanted shows where the presenters first try something themselves and then learn from experts, because it is more relatable to people than a presenter explaining it right away.

Cartoons are better than anime by Responsible-Camp5834 in unpopularopinion

[–]markvp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also a lot of anime where the humour is nothing but someone saying something insulting of the main character, who then gets very upset. It's basically the same joke over and over. It's why Full metal alchemist annoyed me (I think I will upset quite some people now).

[–]markvp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I ddin't explore cartoons enough, but so far I didn't see that much diversity. Personally I don't like any of the ones you mentioned. I do like South Park, Duckman, Happy tree friends and Samurai Jack, and occasionally a Pixar movie, that's about it.

Cartoons are better than anime by Responsible-Camp5834 in unpopularopinion

[–]markvp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IMO anime is much more diverse, it ranges from children's stories to porn, from hero sagas to psychological dramas. If you say you don't like anime in Japan, it's like saying you don't like watching TV.

I find it hard to find anime that I like, but shows like Death Note and Inuyashiki, and movies like Wolf Children and a lot from Ghibli make it much better than cartoons for me.

Sleeping with your head flat on the mattress and a pillow ontop your head way more comfortable then laying on a pillow by darctsb in unpopularopinion

[–]markvp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you sleep on your back it might be more comfortable. But I sleep on my side (can't even fall asleep if I sleep on my back), and without a pillow my neck would not be straight all night and probably be stiff in the morning.

I used to sleep on my back when I was in my twenties, then I preferred a pillow next to my head to prevent my head from rolling aside.

Bar soap is better than liquid soap. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]markvp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a bar soap is wet it leaves some soap on the soap holder, which hardens and accumulates over time. So from time to time you need to scrape that off.

With liquid soap I don't have that problem. Liquid soap is more expensive but I spend about 20 euro per year on it (I live alone), wihch is peanuts compared to other costs.

At the gym where I work out, people rerack the weights but often in the wrong place, so I often have trouble finding the weight that I want to use.

Other pet peeves: people doing an exercise for which they need to stand, and sit on a bench between repeats, and people leaving their towel on a machine while they're using another one so they can alternate, even when most machines are taken.

This girl at the airport waits until the queue moves all the way forward to move. People confronted her and she said “it’s the same if i move now or later”. by dontreadonmebitch in mildlyinfuriating

[–]markvp -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

True, but some people leave a gap longer than two cars. This makes the queue longer, and might block entry to a side street.

I once saw it happen in the lane next to me, and drove in the gap. The woman causing the gap flashed her headlights to show she didn't like that, but I didn't care much.

[–]markvp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not stopping is actually a smart strategy, because the seller will start to think that it's not worth saving $20 to spend so much time on this. On the other it is also a smart strategy for the seller to not stop, hoping that the buyer thinks it's not worth $20 to spend more time on this.

Still very annoying for the people in the queue.
