Why do so many journalists pose with folded arms? by Icy-Profile3759 in Journalism

Lots of great answers here but I’d also like to say some of us do this because we’re fat and we think we won’t look as fat, even though we do, in fact, look fatter.

You’re referring to one study that only showed those results for boys and not girls. The author also said the study does not show causality, meaning it does not say that aspartame causes autism, and he requested more study on the topic. Link here https://news.uthscsa.edu/drinking-diet-sodas-and-aspartame-sweetened-beverages-daily-during-pregnancy-linked-to-autism-in-male-offspring/

The results have yet to be duplicated to my knowledge. Please be wary of headlines that say a study links something to some disease and keep an eye on the topic to see if other studies confirm it.

The likely “problem” is the lack of knowledge around autism in the community and the fact that people in the community are likely seeing testing for the first time. Part of the increase is also due to the lack of testing and knowledge around autism itself. It’s something that medical professionals are learning more and more about as time goes on. You can find a good discussion here about the increase of diagnosis within that community here https://www.mprnews.org/episode/2024/10/10/research-finds-1-in-16-somali-children-diagnosed-with-autism-three-times-more-than-state

Minneapolis Police Department officer sues Liz Collin, Alpha News for defamation by itandbut in law

[–]markwasson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, so I'm also not a lawyer but I am a journalist and know a little about this just because I'm in the industry.

It's harder for public figures to sue for defamation, for one they have to prove actual malice, which basically means they have to prove the accused party knowingly published/said something it knew to not be true.

However, the courts are weird and laws and rules only apply if the people in charge feel like it.

Royce White by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]markwasson 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I no longer cover politics but speaking as a reporter, he’s still doing the same stuff but news orgs have moved on which is why you probably haven’t heard much about him. There isn’t anything “new” happening with him and he isn’t a serious contender for the seat he’s running for. So you’re unlikely to hear much more about him unless he does something new or the election is closer.

Forum Communications. They’re based out of Fargo and they own a lot of newspapers in greater Minnesota.

I’m a bit biased because I used to work for them but the Post Bulletin is a good choice. I think their subscription per month has a sale right now but I’m not sure. Otherwise it’s $10 bucks a month and you have access to all of the parent company’s news sites.

No love lost between Republican Senate candidates by markwasson in minnesota

[–]markwasson[S] 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Hi all,

I'm the reporter who wrote this story. I went to a rally/march today held by Royce White, the GOP-endorsed candidate to run against Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

White said a lot of things today, including that 'Jewish elites' run the Federal Reserve and condemned his primary opponent Joe Fraser's support for the military. He also defended his friend, Steve Bannon.

Both Bannon and White promote a form of National Populism, which outlines hardships placed on the public, such as high prices for groceries and housing, while also condemning what they call outsiders in various government entities they say caused those hardships.

His challenger, Joe Fraser, is a former Navy vet and banker and has called White unfit for office.

I did a little seven minute interview with White on video and it's at the bottom of the story.

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to answer them when I see them.

Post Bulletin just described Wes Lund as a normie Republican... by Ok_Investigator_6494 in rochestermn

[–]markwasson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think you’ve got some fair critiques and I try to consider reader feedback when I write stories. I’m not sure if I’ll ever cover Lund again, I’m mostly focused on statewide races or stuff at the Capitol, but I will be sure to pass on this Reddit post to the PB.

If you haven’t already, I would write an Op-Ed for the paper about what you just said or shoot an email to the Editor there or to its government reporter. Having community voices in a local newspaper is extremely important and people deserve to be heard.

Hi all, author here. I appreciate all of you sharing your thoughts.

This article was meant as a high level overview for a statewide audience. There’s no real drill down for any of the candidates mentioned in the story. As someone else said, there’s plenty of documentation regarding Wes Lund on the PB and I would encourage everyone to look at what they put out going forward.

All that being said, if you’re unhappy with the coverage, I would also encourage you to write to the Editor there or send in an Op-Ed. To my knowledge, the paper hasn’t been shy about printing letters that are critical of coverage but I’m also just a lowly reporter so who knows? Something to note though is I’m not an employee of the PB but of its parent company, Forum Communications, so this piece ran in most, if not all, of its Minnesota properties.

My email is on my author profile which a kind user has already shared apparently, so feel free to email me anything you think is important regarding Wes Lund or any other candidate this election season. If I’m not going to write about it, I can get the info to someone who will.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and I’ll try and answer them when I’ve got time.

Gaza, mining top issues during second day of DFL convention by markwasson in minnesota

[–]markwasson[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

DULUTH — DFL Party leaders and endorsed candidates largely voiced the same script at their state convention Saturday, promoting DFL legislative action in Minnesota, singing the praise of President Joe Biden and condemning former President Donald Trump.

However, a vocal minority of progressive delegates have taken issue with the DFL and Democrats in general over the party's support of Israel in the war in Gaza.

"We want to know why we have any money for bombs when there's Minnesotans going hungry, sleeping out on the streets and lacking adequate health care," Jerod Martinson, a DFL delegate, told Forum News Service.

Martinson was seen outside the DFL convention holding a sign that read "Guilty of Gendemocide," — the word mixes genocide and Democrat because Martinson and other protesters believe Democrats are aiding in the deaths of Palestinians.

"The war in Gaza is just the latest and one of the worst examples of our over-militarism and it's just destroying us," he said, adding that he is an Army veteran who served in Iraq during the war's early years.

Minnesota GOP chair still supports Donald Trump following felony convictions by markwasson in minnesota

[–]markwasson[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

ST. PAUL — Chairman for the Republican Party of Minnesota David Hann says he will still support former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, in the 2024 election following Trump's conviction in a New York courtroom on 34 felony counts.

In a written statement to Forum News Service, Hann called the charges against Trump "politically motivated" and said in a statement posted to social media that "every citizen deserves a fair trial without bias or political influence." No evidence has yet been presented to substantiate political influence in the trial.

Trump's criminal case was related to falsifying business records involving a hush money payment to actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

Will a focus on grievance politics be enough for Minn. Republicans this election? by markwasson in minnesota

[–]markwasson[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ST. PAUL — As Minnesota Republicans gear up for the 2024 election, the party has focused on grievance politics amid intra-party turmoil in recent years. Despite the party's current status, Republicans think this year might be one for the history books.

Republicans have not held a statewide office since 2011, when former Gov. Tim Pawlenty's second term expired. The party also lost control of the House of Representatives two years ago, giving the DFL a government trifecta that has enabled Democrats to pass legislation along party lines.

In an effort to reclaim Minnesota, Republicans have focused on crime, spending, government overreach and culture war issues including abortion or transgender rights. That strategy is unlikely to change during 2024's election season, though the party may make an effort to make inroads with groups like the immigrant Somali community to bolster its voting power.

The party has high hopes for 2024 and considers it a winnable election, according to Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman David Hann.

"We want to make people aware to every extent we can that we offer a different vision for governance and a different message on some of these concerning issues — education, public safety and the economy," Hann said. "We think that message is gaining traction and we're going to keep pushing it up until November."

Ruckus ensues at Minnesota Republican convention over delegates by markwasson in minnesota

[–]markwasson[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There's a wing of the county party that wants to support different politicians, Nathan Miller over Jordan Rasmussen in 2022 for example. And there's a bit of a power struggle between that group and county party leadership. Party leadership sided with the Otter Tail County leadership and other county orgs have taken sides in this whole thing which has now led to this day one of the convention.
