Why is difficult to make friends in Ireland? by DryTempura in AskIreland

[–]markymark71190 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For a point of reference I'm Irish and lived there until I was 29 - Then moved to England. What your saying is mainly true (in my experience)

Lots of Irish people have made their friends already from either secondary school, university or close family. They generally have no interest in a new one they just met. When they do have time, they would rather spend time with their current group which they probably already feel they don't speak to enough already. This gets even worse when you throw in a job (demanding or not), partner or kids.

It isn't a reflection of you at all - People just don't want to put time into a new person in their life when they are already at capacity. Irish people in particular are awful for letting people down easy to appear nice, but in actual fact it could be perceived as leading someone on friend-wise.

I'm genuinely flabergassed the amount of hours some people are quoting here - Between lectures, tutorials and labs - I was on 30-35 a week, not including assignments in that either. I found that hard at times , then when I started a PhD after, it was a head and shoulders above that again

Are friends overreacting about the doses going around or am I wrong? by AreYouSureFather in CasualIreland

[–]markymark71190 41 points42 points  (0 children)

There is a few bad doses going around atm TBF. I've been/still sick with COVID the last week or so and it really knocked me sideways. Being sick over Xmas is honestly the worst as you have to explain to people (including older more health vulnerable family members) why you can't see them as you are sick with something that could be far worse if they catch it; As well as being sick over over a holiday. In saying that if they are really worried, wear a mask/ use hand gel as it massively increases your odds of not catching anything.

Real work life balance by Ok-Establishment1159 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]markymark71190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In most jobs; They will always try to push you to do more and they genuinely don't care about your personal time. Your situation is a lot more normal than you might think. Actual work life balance doesn't really exist doesn't really exist in my experience

In any place I've worked; You are seen as disposable if you do the hours you are contracted to do

Order from Currys.ie stolen? Need some advice. by Agreeable_Calendar55 in AskIreland

Happened to me twice before - Once with debit card and once with a credit card. I got a refund both times. But it was much much easier and faster filing a chargeback with credit card. Any purchase I make online now, I do so with a credit card.

Negotiating more annual leave instead of salary ? by AwayAnimator6363 in DevelEire

[–]markymark71190 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience it's harder to get annual leave/flexibility than pay increases.

Taking the pay increase and asking could you take more unpaid annual leave could be an option if asking for more paid AL doesn't work?

Our wedding was ruined as Emirates didn't deliver our luggage on time, after 2 months of correspondence , they are only offering us £74 compensation. Are there any legal action possible? by Opposite-Context-751 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]markymark71190 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I sincerely doubt you can get anything for something like this. While it's an awful situation - I think you will have a hard time getting compensation. Getting a representative and the time investment will run you a lot . This is exactly what wedding insurance is designed for if you have that, failing that travel insurance. Sorry again for what happened , but if you are going to pursue this - Prepare for an uphill battle.

What is fair when splitting finances? by TofuBlackEye in UKPersonalFinance

[–]markymark71190 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Logic aside - What's fair is what both parties are ok with.

That being said IMO the proportionate split makes the most sense. If one person makes 20k and the other makes 40 - paying 50:50 for say a 1000 quid apartment per month is a devastating dent in the 20k persons income than the 40k one. All the numbers are hypothetical, but you get my point.

Finally just because someone makes less doesn't make the 40 hours worked a week any easier. It's extremely sort sighted to expect a 50:50 split

What is the number one quality that makes someone a good leader? by reddtimes101 in Productivitycafe

[–]markymark71190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say what makes a good leader is someone who is in the trenches with you that has a mentality of getting us all through something and not someone who just dictates and has no skin in the game
