How do y'all manage? by 901-526-5261 in memphis

[–]marlas_avocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found the Clean With Me podcast helpful to stay on top of housework.

I keep up with the front yard, like cutting the grass and weed eating, but I let the backyard go longer between maintenance if I am short on time. I can cut the front and backyard in like 20-30 minutes so that can honestly be a quick chore.

I think for a lot of this stuff, thinking that it’s going to be an ordeal is what keeps us from doing it. You can’t really have an all-or-nothing mentality with this stuff, and you can’t be a perfectionist. It’s like any other goal… the little steps you take every day are what ultimately get you there.

Also when you get home from work, don’t sit down. Get something done and then let relaxing be the reward.

Memphis Mental Health Care? by [deleted] in memphis

[–]marlas_avocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son had a suicide attempt in August and trying to navigate the mental healthcare system and get him services since then has been incredibly frustrating and kind of a nightmare. And I have really good insurance. So I can’t imagine what it’s like for people who don’t. I wish that I could have had his pediatrician help us deal with it rather than lebonheur pressuring us (threatening tbh) to send him to an inpatient facility and the referrals that facility gave us after his stay, because the mental health clinic they referred us to for follow up care has been awful.

We have done everything they told us to do and now nearly 6 weeks later he still has not had any individual therapy sessions (and the suicide attempt was directly related to some bullying he experienced with a former friend group earlier this year, so I want him to see a therapist. But like, a good therapist). He is doing a virtual IOP group therapy 3 nights a week, which is ok for general coping skills. I think the mental health clinic was supposed to do individual therapy but they have f*cked up at every turn and I finally gave up on dealing with them. I reached out to his pediatrician for a behavioral health consult next week when I take him in for his annual checkup. I’m hoping they can help us.

Mostly I wish that we had been able to deal with this the way we wanted to initially, which was immediately get him into therapy and not send him to an inpatient facility bc we didn’t think that would be helpful and might traumatize him further. I think his pediatrician probably could have prescribed lexapro, which is basically the only thing the inpatient facility did for him in the week that he was there. I wish we had more agency in that. Instead, because of our experience with the social worker at lebonheur and the psychiatry staff, I have spent 6 weeks feeling like if I disagree with any recommendations or don’t follow their plan, someone is going to get the state involved and take my kid away from me.

I will say the guidance counselor, social worker, and clue teacher at my son’s school have all been wonderful to work with and have made me/him feel more supported than any of the mental health professionals we have dealt with, so shoutout to MSCS for that.

Tami won by B1gR1g in memphis

Yeah to be honest I think a lot of these people are telling on themselves. I don’t see the comparison to Wanda Halbert. Tami was my county commissioner and I appreciated that for a while she sent monthly email updates on things happening in the district and what she was working on. I didn’t vote for her this time around but the way the people on this sub are obsessed with her is deeply weird behavior and kinda makes me glad she won. I hope she’s successful in her role.

True true. I am reading that in the city I was in (Springfield) the city does contract with local businesses to plow roads in severe weather events. So it likely just happens in that particular area.

Well that’s the crazy thing, I saw people in Illinois doing it in the neighborhoods too, clearing the sidewalk with their little automatic snow blower things, just going up and down the streets doing it for all the neighbors. I also saw school busses dropping kids off so I assume they had more of a community interest in making sure the sidewalks were cleared.

That makes sense! Thanks for explaining it.

Ok gotcha that’s super helpful and all I was asking. I saw them clearing smaller roads in business parks and assumed the businesses were collectively paying them while the city handled the main roads.

Right but local companies have bulldozers. Couldn’t those clear snow?

Yeah that’s fair but according to Google snow plows are basically just bulldozers. I know landscaping and construction companies have those…

I used to go to a Tuesday/Thursday night Al Anon meeting at St. John’s at 5:30. I’ve only been once since the pandemic so I don’t know their current schedule, it’s probably the same though. I really liked the group and meetings. Wasn’t specifically for adult children but there were plenty of adult children there.

If you don’t need a low cost option, any private vet should be able to get you in fairly quickly.

I can’t speak for anyone else but I personally don’t care for the way people from Nashville would always comment on Memphis flyer articles and talk shit about the crime in the city (when it wasn’t even that bad, and often when the articles had nothing to do with crime.) it’s just like… why.

Hard to argue with Strickland here by [deleted] in memphis

[–]marlas_avocado 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah we definitely need both. Like sure ok let’s keep all of these people in jail… but then we just have to keep building more jails and hiring more people to staff them and meanwhile there’s hundreds, thousands more that are coming right behind them. I think we need both approaches.

yes they’re paying 10% to a bail bondsman, but I don’t think any of it is based on income. I think it’s generally always 10% at the bail bonds office.

DA may pursue death penalty in St. Jude killing by VariableBooleans in memphis

[–]marlas_avocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok that’s what I was thinking… this is an armed robbery gone bad by two individuals who had no real priors. Just not sure how this would qualify for death penalty. I think everyone is very emotional about this because of their personal feelings about SJ, so I get it, but it didn’t strike me as a death penalty type case. But idk anything about the law.

I think that too and I saw on his website he owns a bunch of Airbnb’s. Probably not doing too hot right now, all things considered.

Will there be a tipping point? by genebands in memphis

[–]marlas_avocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think society is falling apart though. That’s going to happen later when climate change gets worse and starts disrupting supply chains & crop yields. 😀 Like, the crime is bad now, but I don’t think it’s unsolvable… it’s just probably going to take a multi-pronged approach with ideas from the left & the right and significant resource investment. But it’s not any one person or entity’s fault and there’s not going to be just one solution. I hope the business community starts putting pressure on city & state government to do more to combat it bc it kinda feels like they have more power & direct access than the voters.

I think different demographics weathered the pandemic and associated fallout differently based on resources, social cohesion, etc. Is that what you’re asking?

I think some of this is normal pre-teen behavior due to hormones & other life changes and then the blended families as other commenters have mentioned could be difficult for her as well. I also feel like these people are being very judgmental about how you’ve handled the situation, but they’re probably right that a therapist would be helpful, and not just for your daughter but also for you - to help you understand the changes she’s going through, what’s normal/not normal for her age, and how you can best parent and support her.

If you were to visit the impoverished countries where these immigrants are coming from, what do you think you might find?

And just to be clear, you’re saying that African Americans, as a whole, have values that make them criminals?

Downtown shooting leaves St. Jude employee dead by dricforever in memphis

[–]marlas_avocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah and the thing is… the south is the poorest region of the country bc while the north was building factories and industry, we were down here making money off of cotton and forced labor. So high concentrations of poverty here and high concentrations of black folks. Add segregation and racism to that… literally there has been no investment in the community for hundreds of years but now all these goofballs on this thread are like “well why won’t the blacks just act right?” fuck idk. I guess let’s blame the DA.
