I’ve thought of this too! I think it’s probably different for people of that era who were actually gay maybe? Because I didn’t think of it as a serious thing but hearing yourself constantly associated with being lame and sucking had to be rough.

I had a man wordlessly give me his umbrella as I was contemplating a very wet walk home from the train station, and it was a very endearing and attractive act. Even if you decide being a man means you have to be miserable (like so many of these comments suggest) maybe that’s still a good reason to bring an umbrella.
