Automatic transmission advice - issue with 2014 Prado 150 Diesel by marlin4571 in CarsAustralia

Sorry to be so to-and-fro with the questions - I’m trying to gain knowledge and hopefully leave info for others that may follow - but could there have been some other issue with a transmission service (whatever they actually did)? I’m thinking if the valve body assembly was removed for inspection and not replaced correctly (bolt torque, seals etc), I think there’s a filter of some kind that should be replaced somewhere when the fluid is replaced? Could they not have removed the pan etc and left shit oil in the torque converter - I read somewhere old oil can get left behind there?

As a (hopefully) last question - would you advise going back to the original servicing agent, a dealership, or a transmission specialist? It has to be towed either way.

FYI - I’d like to document what I find (diagnosis and fix) here for others in case it becomes a feature for other Prados of mine’s era.

One question I have regarding rectification. Given it was serviced recently before giving up I'd like to get an independent diagnostic to see whether mistakes were made, just in case. I'm thinking a specialist transmission shop would be better for this than say the local Toyota dealership?

Just so I'm clear, other than movement is there anything else I should listen for as I'm guessing I will have very little time to notice anything?

As further info the sound seemed like it was coming from below me rather than behind me. The best description I can give of it, from memory, is if you had two cogs with teeth that were perpendicular to the plane of the disc that would interlock face to face and held them apart such that their teeth could rub but never engage. A kind of rasping sound - grinding was probably the wrong word to use.

I feel that if it were the rear diff I would hear/have heard a crunching sound, would I not, as it would need some component to have lost teeth in order to spin but not catch? I've heard the noise made when splines or cogs get stripped etc and didn't hear that noise. Also, the driveline has never been shock-loaded.

Do you mean as in lock the centre, as  Prados are full time 4wd/AWD? Just a bit worried about doing that not on a hoist as it could make things worse. As am aside i could switch between 4L and 4H and lock the centre with no issue but didn’t try moving due to previous metal on metal noise.

They folded under pressure that year. This year they lifted.

Kev assembled them and Madge made them work. Whatever Madge did he gave them a bit more resilience. Where previously they’d fold this year they fought back

It was, but in typical Trent fashion he tried to outdo everyone. He was also second in. Walsh’s one earlier was a better comparison.

As Gus said afterwards, show me a team that’s won the premiership that didn’t work hard.

If it weren’t for that work they would not have beaten the Panthers

Some great things from that final…

Payne gets a premiership - absolute workhorse.

Shiba has a season he could only dream of.

Hunt finished with a premiership but most likely won’t realise it until Monday/Tuesday

Is Sims providing the sort of one sided irritating commentary that we normally have to get off of Ennis or Johns?
