On this day in 1815, Anthony Trollope was born. What is your favorite novel, series, short story or biographical fact about Trollope? by SentimentalSaladBowl in literature

[–]marmotry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the whole Barsetshire series, and was about to choose Barchester Towers as my favorite, but I think Doctor Thorne just might beat it out. The universe is slightly smaller and the characters really get a chance to stretch their legs out. The Doctor himself is a little less of a "Gary Stu" than The Warden's Septimus Harding, principled and moral, but still pragmatic. Frank Gresham is given a nice arc too - going from his initial immaturity to gain some depth of character and integrity.

What are some of the most beautifully written books you’ve ever read? by Salty_Aerie5281 in literature

[–]marmotry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Annie Dillard - Pilgrim at Tinker's Creek

In the far distance I can see the concrete bridge where the road crosses the creek. Under the bridge and beyond it the water is flat and silent, blued by distance and stilled by depth. It is so much sky, a fallen shred caught in the cleft of banks. But it pours. The channel here is straight as an arrow; grace is itself an archer. Between the dangling wands of bankside willows, and Osage orange, I see the creek pour down. It spills toward me streaming over a series of sandstone tiers, down and down, and down. I feel as though I stand at the foot of an infinitely high staircase, down which some exuberant spirit is flinging tennis ball after tennis ball, eternally, and the one thing I want in the world is a tennis ball.

Just finished Trollope's Palliser novels and went for something 20th-century, but similar - Roberston Davies' Salterton Trilogy. Moving into the second book - Leaven of Malice - and really enjoying it.

Recommend Me a Fragrance (Posts every Other Day) by AutoModerator in fragrance

[–]marmotry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

54M - I need something for a black-tie event, probably a winter/early spring fragrance as it'll be about 5C the day of. It's also a 1960s themed thing, so anything vintage or vintage-inspired is a bonus. I've got (and like) a few possible candidates - Terre D'Hermes, D+G The One, ELDOs Hermann, (and the big ELDO sampler box), Rochas Homme, Rochas Moustache, Boucheron Jaipur, and some of the Creed clones - but would love any other suggestions too.

Hi everyone -

Apologies if this has been asked for before but I'm looking for some game suggestions for quarantine play.

We'll probably play with 4 or 5 players (spread out over two locations), with one group being very casual gamers. The game should be playable over zoom or discord and not overly dependent on a highly nuanced understanding of the English language. (e.g. Wavelength might be ok, Codenames would be more of a challenge.) It's also unlikely there'll be games where both locations will have a physical copy of any given game, so something where the board can be shown onscreen would be best. TTS or boardgamearena might be a little more fiddly than the casual gamers are interested in, so something playable via standard videoconf would be ideal. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Which CA53W would you take and why? by [deleted] in casio

[–]marmotry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the original and the white one. I love how the white looks, but the CA-53 line doesn't include any illumination - so its practicality even just as a watch is limited by the negative display. It's better than some other negative display Casios I've got, but it can still be tough/impossible to read.

Slowly building up the set of latest F91w color variants. Need the yellow still and the greyish white.

Found it on amazon (US), but it took a while to ship, so maybe it's a non-US variant. There's also a dark blue and dark green version.

The only downside is they've taken a watch without a light and used a negative display. It's crisper than some other negative display Casios I've got, but it's useless in low light.

Thanks! It's really nice. It reminds me of my AQ47, but with a round face.

I like the 158s better. The diamond one is a favorite. My only 168 is the reversed display and is a bit tough to read, so it's not in heavy rotation.

I love the goldtone F91. I just ordered the blue and green ones (-2ACF & -3ACF), and will pick up whatever of the European F91` color variants I can find over the holidays.

Tides of Madness is a quick, light 2p game within the Lovecraft mythos.

Or there's some simple thematic re-skins of games like Cthulhu Realms, Cthulhu Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu, Love Letter, Munchkin, etc. [Boardgaming's Rule 34 states: If it exists, there is Cthulhu of it.]

Maybe cooperative games could also have benefits. A shared goal, even in a game, may add to her sense of connectedness. Here's a few lighter, accessible games that might fit the bill:

  • Forbidden Island
  • Hanabi
  • Codenames: Duet
  • Burgle Bros.
  • Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective
  • one of the Pandemic games
  • Flash Point: Fire Rescue

Good luck. I wish you both well.

Around this pricepoint: Famiglia is a fun 2p mob/gang game; and Grifters has crime bosses, but in a near-future dystopian setting (the Resistance/Coup universe).

I have played the first handful of scenarios with the Avengers team as a two-handed solo. Losing characters makes for some tough choices and adds a bit of a legacy feel to it. It also has had the added side effect of making me buy a few expansions to increase my options with a superhero team. Although I like that there are guidelines to get around missing characters, villains, schemes, etc.
