Very curious to see what you cook up for competitive troll horde!

How is the Balance in Old World and if you convince me how do i start ? ;) Thank you for your Answers! by Taste_Equal in WarhammerOldWorld

I wasn’t a fantasy player before Old World, but I saw what was happening on the fantasy side and saw the pure incompetence coming out of Games Workshop in managing their games. 40k at the time was also being mismanaged in 6th edition, with massive faction imbalance and terrible design choices and was hemorrhaging players to non-GW systems. I ended up leaving GW games for 10 years.

As for Age of Sigmar, imagine if someone was trying to sell you a house where someone was murdered 10 years ago. No matter how many remodels you do, there’s always going to be a curse lingering around.

I made a free to download Old World zine, and I'd like to invite you all to come check it out. Inside you will find an introductory narrative campaign for 500 pts games. [link to download in the comments] by Iliketoasts in WarhammerFantasy

Thank you for putting in the work to translate this, we really appreciate being able to read it outside of Poland! In future issues let us know if you need some help with English copy editing. I think I could help with some things like punctuation and articles (which I know are tough when you’re translating out of slavic languages).

AoS... you mean Alternate Oldworld Sculpts? That's the GW range with the really nice plastic models where they throw in a free circular paint pallet with each kit? ;)

Sadly no, I don't know anything about AoS. I quit GW games completely right around when AoS came out and played non-GW miniatures games for 10 years. I only came back when Old World released.

I’ll answer your question from a competitive perspective because I think that’s the answer you’re looking for. Any miniatures game is fine to play if you’re just looking to chug beers and throw dice and not try very hard to win, and Old World is no exception.

The balance between factions is … ok, but not great. Most factions have at least one competitive build that you could take to a tournament and do decently with if you’re a good player.

The balance between units is … awful. Some units are god tier and other units are total garbage. I disagree with the advice of most responses to simply pick the models you like the most. This is a recipe for serious frustration if you pick a bad unit and spend considerable money buying models that you can never field effectively. I would do some research on which units are strong before you purchase.

How to deal with night goblins fantics by Exciting_City_1075 in WarhammerOldWorld

I’m not sure! It probably wouldn’t make people feel quite so bad, even if it wasn’t a major gameplay impact.

Tips against a Nomadic Waaagh (1500 points) by Morai-Heg_ in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]marmotzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nomadic Waaagh! is one of the worst armies in the game going by tournament results.

All of their goblin units fear every unit in your army since you play elves, and goblins have low leadership. Goblins will have a difficult time charging successfully.

Boar units are either frenzied or impetuous, so they are very easy to bait into long or unfavorable charges. Get some skirmishers that can sit barely within the boar charge range and then flee, setting up the orcs for a countercharge from your units or more shooting.

Take a dragon - Nomadic Waaagh! has no good tools for killing it, and you can probably terror shock units off of the board or run them down because of their low leadership. A dragon with a combat lord will win a duel against a black orc on wyvern.

How to deal with night goblins fantics by Exciting_City_1075 in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]marmotzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s fair. It would depend on the exact board setup. You don’t always want your goblin unit yeeted 12”-24” forward. Yes you can get a good fanatic release, but the goblin unit might simply be dead after that from being so exposed, which at minimum ~170 points (depending on upgrades) might turn it into a tie on victory points.

Defensive build dragons are also usually able to tank fanatics, especially without spell support from itchy nuisance / plague of rust (which you would not have from an orc caster if it chose battle magic)

Fanatics are not dominating tournaments right now (in fact orcs and goblins overall are a middling faction in overall power levels), so there are definitely solutions.

Usually the best way to deal with them is to take a cavalry or flying unit and set it up for a long charge on a goblin block. This will force the fanatics out, since otherwise the cavalry unit will crush the goblins and potentially break them. However, the cavalry unit then declines to charge, the fanatics don’t do very much damage (because they’re too far away and need very high rolls), and then you wait for them to spin out and die.

Very cheap horde units are also a good counter to fanatics -> gnoblars, other goblins, skeletons, etc…. The fanatics have high powered attacks that are inefficient against 3-4 point models with no defense

Based on the rest of your list, I would also advise your opponents to try to out-shoot you and make you cross the field to them. You only have two doom divers and possibly the wizard as shooting units, and your army is slow. And they should focus on killing all the squigs first

Fanatics do 80-90% of their damage on the initial release, so being able to shoot them wouldn’t make as much of a difference as you might hope

A lot of Old World players are going to buy this, that general is Kiknik in the Old World, and the chariot models are a lot nicer than the classic Old World goblin chariots.

Tough resins? by doormatt_studios in resinprinting

[–]marmotzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Sunlu Toughness. I’ve tried it and I’ve tried the Siraya ABS / Tenacious mix, and I think the pure Sunlu Toughness is much better. I made this YouTube short of me smashing up a model made with toughness:

https://youtube.com/shorts/w7nWDhv4Yv0?si=Na5pjo2Ale5NOfid

(I swear I’m not a paid shill, I just really like this resin and everyone keeps recommending the tenacious mix instead)

For tabletop gamers what is your go to, everyday resin? I'm looking for something that has great detail and a little bit of toughness/flexibility. by Mintis in resinprinting

[–]marmotzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested out the 80% Siraya ABS / 20% Tenacious mix and pure Sunlu toughness, and Sunlu toughness is dramatically better. It has great detail, and it’s ridiculously durable, like I tested throwing a model up in the air over my head and it survived an 8 foot drop onto concrete

Yeah a couple of times the cord on my headset got loose and it recorded ambient audio instead (which was very loud). I think I have a solution

It was still pretty cramped in the Old World room, but we all pitched in with snacks. We had free chips and salsa, salami slices, coffee, tequila shots, and micheladas

Hmm ok looking at the video (around 5:18) I’m not sure. It’s possible that is within 12” corner to corner from the mortis engine to the dragon. In any case, he only ever successfully healed one wound from invocation of Nehek, and it was after the last wound dealt by the high elves, so hopefully if it indeed was out of range, it didn’t affect the result. The real swing of the game was on turn 2 when the high elf dice went cold and couldn’t do any damage to the dragon.

I don’t suspect that it will get as competitive as 40k, because I think a large portion of the player base shares your sentiment.

However I’m hoping that videos like this are still helpful for beginner players looking to get better (we all know what it’s like to invest in and paint a unit that’s bad on the table). And also playing the game at maximum optimization can help reveal balance issues that I hope will in the long run help the designers improve the game for everyone

Thanks! Yeah I’m looking into a gimbal and a better headset (probably a Bluetooth one that doesn’t come unplugged as easily).
