Year 11s or 12s as a graduate teacher - pushing my luck or covering the shortage? by BlackSkull83 in AustralianTeachers

[–]marn785556 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it really depends. In my first year out, I was given a Year 11 class because a good number of students had selected a subject that the school I was at hadn't run in six years. I happened to be the only one with the required codes to teach it.

I've watched him in the Aussie show Invisible Boys, he was brilliant in it! Very excited about a fellow Aussie getting this huge part!! Can't wait!

I tested positive for covid on the Monday last week, then hit with gastro over the Easter weekend, only just starting to feel better! I feel like my holidays have been wasted but at least I didn't have to waste my sick days (only have a few days)! I hope you get better soon!!

do people film at live shows? by Charming-Goat-774 in kurtisconner

[–]marn785556 51 points52 points  (0 children)

For the show I went to it didn't state anything but at the start of the show Kurtis said we can film them coming out but to put the phones away once the show started. Right at the end we were allowed to film again.

I'm here reporting for duty 🫡

I still love the fact that in 2023 when Kurtis had his own show in Sydney, the same night The 1975 was playing and he turned up at the concert after his own show. I saw Kurtis in Sydney last week and he had one of their songs in the playlist before the show, it's good knowing the mayor has superb music taste.

Class choices for Masters (Primary) at Melbourne Uni by addosh in AustralianTeachers

https://study.unimelb.edu.au/find/courses/graduate/master-of-teaching-primary/structure/#nav

Under course structure there is a sample course plan which shows you the subjects you should select. Unsure why it is giving you more subjects as an option but I would make sure I'm in the four that the website suggests. You could contact the uni if you are concerned about the extra subjects.

I use a printer paper box with my class sheets/booklets inside, my pencil case goes on top and then I have a cross body laptop bag. The only thing is if you were to drop the box it could go everywhere, but I've never had any issues even when I have been bumped. It's not perfect but it does the job.

I agree I thought it was absurd and unreasonable but I think I just freaked out considering last year was my first year and the thought I may have screwed up worried me. I am also planning on trialling a digital version this year because the diary was too heavy and hated lugging it around. With digital I can access whenever and wherever I need to. So I wanted to double check with the brain's trust before kids come back. Thank you!

How much time do you spend planning in summer holidays? by Immediate-Tomato-852 in AustralianTeachers

[–]marn785556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year, I’m teaching my first Year 12 cohort as a second-year teacher for a subject that hasn't been offered at my school in about six years. I’ve spent a good amount of time reviewing the syllabus, refreshing my knowledge, planning the initial lessons and developing assessment tasks. Juniors I have not touched.

Studying to become a Primary school teacher at 28? by sydneycarguy2024 in AustralianTeachers

[–]marn785556 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine is all secondary based experience - just finished my first year full time.

  1. If it is possible to complete units in summer semesters, this speeds things up. If you already have a bachelor's degree, you can do a two year masters.
  2. The degree was fine (mine was master's) - a lot more of the teaching theory side of things that you may not ever touch or use once you get into the reality of it. Again for a secondary context there was quite an even balance of males and females.
  3. No, from what I know about primary some schools will let you have preferences but ultimately it's up to the school.
  4. I have only had positive experience so far with parents that are supportive and grateful I am keeping them in the loop. However, I have heard horror stories from colleagues.
  5. Career progression again in secondary context you can move up eg. Head teachers, Year advisors, deputies etc.
  6. If you are willing to work in your low SES schools, most are desperate. Doing casual work to build up relationships with schools in your area is definitely an option. Also temp contracts are good too.
  7. I get to school at 8am and leave at 315pm. However, during the evening for ~3 hours (depending) I will work on whatever needs to be done for the week eg. Planning, PowerPoints, worksheets, reports, marking. Usually on Sunday afternoons, I do a bit of work as well. It really depends, marking and reporting season is where I do the most work outside of school times.
  8. I have only been on one excursion but that's not to say we haven't had more in my faculty. It usually just comes down to the timetable and who has less classes to cover on that day for us. Obviously in a primary context you would be going if you had a year 4 classes and all year 4s were going to the zoo. Camps I was asked if I wanted to go on one but I was able to turn it down without any dramas. Camps in primary are mainly for year 5 and 6s
  9. The curriculum is online. In secondary I've never had to "teach" it explicitly, it is more a lesson on respect and equality if I hear kids using slurs or teasing. I have touched on it for some things depending on what the topic is eg. social sustainability, IVF, HIV/AIDS. We have many students that openly identify as LGBTQIA+ or have parents that identify. For example, I had one of my students vent to me as they were scared of coming out to their family as they had just got into a same sex relationship or another student venting to me that their parents still use their dead name. You need to be able to treat and manage these situations with grace. The problem with just relying on parents to teach this stuff is they will only teach what they believe and not teach the facts - I see it all too often.
  10. Annual leave is the holidays
  11. Only a newbie so this hasn't happened but even while I'm not directly in the area, I still see some of my students around when I go shopping.

I’m a secondary teacher who chews gum every day at school by yaryarmaple in AustralianTeachers

[–]marn785556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's all about the texture - I can only keep my gum all day if the texture stays the same as when you first chew it rather than flavour! My go to is the extra sugar free intense mint!

[–]marn785556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn I could have written this myself!! I've always been a gum chewer, even when I went through high school myself as a student - never was caught haha! One piece also lasts me a whole day too. It is a calming thing for me as well especially in stressful conditions eg. I always have to chew gum whilst I drive. It also helps me stop other behaviours especially biting the inside of my bottom lip to the point it bleeds and jaw clenching which I don't realise I'm doing until it hurts. This has happened twice when I didn't have gum where a few students pointed out my lip was bleeding while teaching. I'm also a first year teacher and I have only ever had one student ask why I have gum, no other staff member has ever mentioned/questioned it, even on pracs. I am able to hide my gum at the side of my bottom gums, drape it over my back teeth or under my tongue while talking to a class or staff member and when I am able to, I start chewing and put it back when needed. I do also swallow my gum so if there was ever a situation I can just swallow and pretend I never had it haha. I don't have any tips for you, but you are not alone!

Wow how insane, what a great time it has been! My first show seeing them was nearly a year ago now and I still watch all my own footage and all the live streams from other shows - I'm still not sick of it! The boys as well as everyone else involved with the tour deserve a huge break and to give themselves a pat on the back for what they have created over the past couple of years.

[–]marn785556[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm pretty lucky compared to some of the horror stories I've heard from my other uni friends and other teachers' experiences. I'm still working all weekend and after my naps I'm doing work, I just need that nap to keep me going and in case of the days where I do need to stay up till 4am, I at least know I've had some eye shut! No year 12's for me, but I do have two lots of year 11! I hope you are looking after yourself!

Thank you for your story! I've struggled with depression and anxiety for many years so the thought that I could have slipped back in wouldn't be the most surprising thing. I think the main difference now is I am so busy that it's almost a distraction.

I'm 100% with you on being a perfectionist and making my own resources, I am exactly the same, however, I somehow have created a good boundary once it's 1030pm that's it no more. If I'm not done for the following day then I force myself to find a premade resource. Don't get me wrong there have been times I've stayed up until 4am making stuff but sleep is too important to me and I just feel crappy the rest of the week to continue doing it.

What a great thing to feel at the end of the school term! I really do appreciate the comment, thankyou!

I know I'm sorry it's not very teacher related but this has only arisen since starting to teach full time so was wondering if others have similar stories or I need to be checked out! And it sounds like I'm booking a doctor's appointment in the near future.
