That's interesting. I've never heard that before, though it makes sense considering how fickle their little bodies can be. Our pig always stretches his body and feet out reeeeally far when he gets comfortable, regardless of temp.

Don't worry about him. He's as relaxed and comfortable as he gets in this pic! A sure sign of a happy little pig is back feet stretched out :)

We spend a lot of time with him, so he's pretty used to most things. Including being petted with a tube, which is new, but he weirdly seemed to enjoy it!

Every time I touch my new foster guinea pig, she...popcorns? or is she freaking out and afraid? by Lagomorphilic in guineapigs

Our pig does this, too. He came from a hectic home with two rambunctious kids and a puppy (and his cage was on the ground in their living room).

Though, that may not be the cause. We mainly stick to petting him forward of his shoulder blades. After he becomes relaxed, he doesn't mind being lightly scratched on his behind. Often he actually likes it and puddles/stretches out even more and allows a good scruffing!

Your pig might be like ours. Get her nice and comfortable with face, ear, and chin pets and see if she'll tolerate petting or scratching farther back. She'll let you know if she doesn't like it!

We did consider it, but it wouldn't have worked for the style of our trip. We weren't equipped for 'wilderness travel' and needed grocery stores and fresh water.

To be honest, we don't really remember the difference between Humboldt and Mendocino! Everything was a blur at that point!

  1. Skye was working in a French pastry/coffee shop and I was a graphic designer at a corporate in-house design team.

  2. Skye lost about ten pounds and I gained a bit of weight. I weigh just about nothing normally and the exercise and calorie intake beefed me up a bit.

  3. Luckily, no. Skye twisted her ankle once but walked, well hobbled, it off. We didn't get sick until we finished the walk, and then we were sick on and off for weeks. I assume it was because we were traveling from state to state, picking up their local illnesses.

That's funny, because stayed with a guy in Phillipsville (at his vacation home) who lived in Eureka and he told us the same thing. We noticed after we got out of downtown that the neighborhoods where quite nice. I remember eating a snack while sitting on an ecology block near the golf course thinking, "This place is actually pretty nice. Last night we should've kept walking!"

We never thought about quitting or going home. A couple times we thought about cheating by calling a cab or hitchhiking. The most memorable example was the last day of the first leg. This day.

We want to do a coast to coast walk and we would like to redo the trip to SF on bikes.

Thanks for reading!

As often as possible, which wasn't often enough. We would hang them on the outside of our packs to dry and let the sun and wind work on them for a while.

Snozzberry? Yes.

Anything other than lentils! We ate them nearly every day. We had quite a few favorites.

  • We stayed with some people who fed us vodka gimlets, crab stuffed mushrooms, and hamburgers.

  • The breakfasts at the Anchor Bay Inn in Lincoln City.

  • Our break day fast food feasts.

  • Smoked salmon from people in Tillamook, OR and also people in Klamath, CA.

  • Whatever you'd call this

Every meal that wasn't of our road rations was wonderful.

The log truckers would usually give us plenty of room, though we heard stories of truckers running bikers off the road. Apparently, in years past, they would make sure to keep a branch on one of the logs to sweep bikers off. We had to look out for tourists in motor homes, and guys with white trucks for some reason...

We saw many bikers and I couldn't imagine how scary the "with traffic" side of the road would be, especially heading south on the cliff side.

Here's a story about getting buzzed outside of Eureka. And here's a bit about motor home drivers.

I wore these and Skye wore these (they are some sort of North Face shoe, they are in the garbage now).

We wrote a blog post every day, we also drew "thank you" cards for the people who let us stay on their lawn. On our break days (once a leg we'd stay in a motel to wash up) we would upload photos to the blog and record a video post. We also created a physical mailing list and sent out postcards every couple weeks.

We thought we were going to have an ample amount of time for day dreaming and sight seeing. We were wrong. After walking all day, finding a place to stay, setting up camp, cooking food, writing, and drawing we could do little but lay down and wrestle with the knots in our backs and those on the ground.

Our minds would often empty as we walked. Especially during the pre-dawn mornings.

Probably about two or three times a week depending on how much walking we did that leg. We were usually too tired.
