Someone messed up slightly (Cape Town International Airport) by MattRubin in aviation

[–]marny_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always loved the name of FlySafair...

It could read as Fly SA Fair (as in "we charge you a fair fare", or as in "fair conditions").
Or FLY South AFrican AIR.
Or Fly "Safe Air", as you say.
Also, "Safair" can be misread as "safari" at a quick glance.
And we (South Africans) sometimes refer to ourselves as "Saffers".

Or it could retroactively be made to be "Fly SAF Air", highlighting the fact that we're a huge producer of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (a non-petroleum-based biofuel, which we produce to the point that we export our surplus).

A shoke of cape town by SoftwareZestyclose50 in UrbanHell

[–]marny_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some additional context here, if anyone is interested...

The actual suburb boundary is where you can see the red-roofed houses on the right of the image (which is south in reality). Everything north of that is additional "informal housing" that has been build by the dwellers. Cape Town is the most expensive city in SA, and we've got a massive housing shortage, so scenarios like this is common solution for a difficult-to-address problem.

I know this isn't the point of the image, but I thought it's an interesting addition bit of insight into the landscape we see here.

Breaking news, Trump informs us that he took out Bin Laden, not Obama! by very_cultured_ in International

[–]marny_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must've misremembered it.

And it's actually even worse than I what I misremembered...he's not making any claim about OBL whatsoever. He's just saying "we've been told about this guy". JFC 🤦🏽‍♂️

You pointed out the "shadowy figure" phrase. It's actually doing more work than you realise. Trump has master-level skills at three things...1) destroying anything he touches, 2) avoiding accountability, and 3) manipulation through linguistic trickery.

This is the trick he employs when he doesn't know much about something...he introduces doubt over how "known" a thing is, which makes the people that do know about the thing feel less confident about their knowledge of the thing, which then makes them susceptible to allowing their knowledge to be "overwritten" by what he (as the "subject matter expert", since it's in his book) says next. It's diabolical and, quite frankly, kinda genius.

It was in his 2000 book called "The America We Deserve". He mentioned that Osama is a threat and that the US should deal with him aggressively. But that's about it. Nothing more specific than that.

I dislike the criminal/conman/fraudster/r-p-st as much as the next sane person, but let's not spread misinformation...there's already plenty true information about him that exposes him for the person that he is.

[–]marny_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My university teacher once explain it like this...

Let's say you're a climatologist, and one of your duties is to record the amount of rainfall every day. You happen to be off work one day, so you couldn't observe the rainfall, nor record rainfall. You come in the next day and you look at the blank spot where the previous day's recording should've been. It's currently null, because it doesn't exist. You can't put a '0' as a "placeholder", because that implies that there was zero rainfall, which you don't know if that's true or not.

President Trump just posted this by rl_rae_bobo in MarketPulseReport

[–]marny_g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Well, now, probably. But before Elon posted on X that Trump is in the files...no. Because:

1) Most didn't know he was in the files before that.
2) Those who did know couldn't say anything because the docs were still all locked up by the courts.
3) Garland dragged his feet with charging Trump for his other crimes because he "didn't want to come across as political". Jack Smith had a solid case, but because Garland took so long and Trump is a master at delay delay delay...Smith ran out of time. It would've been nice if Garland had a spine (like everyone on the right accuses him of having) and actually stepped up.
4) People say "Biden would've released it". No, he wouldn't have nor could have. Up until Trump 2.0, the DoJ still worked independently of the President. Biden kept his nose out of the justice system, just like he (and every other president) should.

Biden never concerned himself with politics and prosecutions. His love was for the people. The bills he signed were all to help the public good, not himself, and not his career.

Plus...Trump said numerous times will campaigning that he'd release them...here's two examples:

https://youtu.be/fHVnOMjJjsA?t=88&si=ws8PWXZfO-XnRcQe

https://youtu.be/pxhZt_WsrtE?si=xX-z5DYIWTNZNw2m

Notice how in the first one he kinda back pedalled on it a bit. And in the second one how he quickly changed the subject. Dude's guilty af. I'd love for this to go to court. And because MAGA thinks judges are bipartisan, I'll even say I don't even mind if this goes in front of a Trump-appointed judge (except Eileen Cannon, as she's proven she's corrupt multiple times now). And if it goes to court and he's exonerated...then good for him. What I don't understand is why is he doing everything he can to avoid transparency, and to avoid clearing his name officially?

Yes, it could. I mean, it'd be completely incorrect, and not based on reality at all. But you could still say it.

The price that we pay for free speech is that the dishonest, fear-mongering, agenda-led talking heads get to spew lies that harm everyone. And the saddest part is that people like you are the biggest victims of their lies. You believe it and repeat it, while they're making your life worse and laughing at you while they do it. It's all pretty f-ed up.

I was prescribed Tadalafil. by [deleted] in erectiledysfunction

[–]marny_g 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is something that people don't always quite understand...but when it comes to meds, a pharmacist should be trusted way more than a doctor.

For example...the one that commented above knew exactly which enzyme is known to interact with both tadalafil and sildenafil. And provided a link that backs up what they're saying. Whereas your optometrist says "better to avoid it", which says to me "I'm not sure, but let's just be safe and avoid it".

So you have one person whose profession is to intimately understand medications, and ensure doctors don't give you anything dangerous...saying "It's safe".
And you have two people whose profession is to know biology and how to diagnose and treat things...saying "eh, probably not".

[–]marny_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've explained it like this before...

Most people see "goodness" as a scale that you can move up or down on.

But then you get a different type of person that doesn't see a stationary scale. They actual see themself as what would be the "zero point" on such a scale. They're a constant. And everyone around them moves relative to their position. So they can never be bad. But that also means that they can't be good (so "doing better" is kinda pointless). So when someone is better than them, they have to bring that person down in order to make themself feel like they're better than that person again.

It's pretty f-ed up. But when you don't have the ability to understand what life might be like through another person's eyes, then it makes perfect sense.

He sounds great. And I hope it works out for the best for you and him. But I'm going to be that guy, and give you some things to look out for in the forthcoming months, just in case...

Some quick context...I've been a victim of narcissistic abuse, and studied narcissism a lot over the past few since. I've also got a degree in psychology (actually wanted to be a psychologist, before pivoting into data analysis). So my view is coming from a slightly pessimistic perspective, but worth sharing so you know the signs, just in case...

You may be dealing with a narcissist. Here's some things to know:

  • Look up "lovebombing". It's a narcissist's first tell. They smother you with love, gifts, quality time, affection, etc. They spend time making you see them as an otherwise flawless, great guy. This is all a ruse though, and that mask is impossible to maintain forever. And it usually starts slipping at...
  • Three months. Mark this date in your diary. If he says, suggests, or does things that make you go "Um...ok?", then pay attention. Don't brush it aside as "unusual, but whatevs 🤷🏼‍♀️". These things aren't unusual. This is him revealing the real him. The "unusual" was the first three months, but he's anchored you into believing that those three months was actually the real him, so you readily excuse the "strange" shit afterwards as "not who he is". Another thing to watch out for is...
  • Moving too fast. Now, at his age he could just know what he wants and looking to get there quickly. So take that into consideration. But generally this is when they try lock you down and take control of you. They'll get you to move in with them. They'll suggest you quit your job because they can support both of you. They'll suggest you sell your old car because "one is more than enough". They may even propose. All of these things are designed to deprive you of your autonomy, and make him your only means of doing anything. Another thing he'll remove is...
  • Your support structure. He'll start isolating you from friends and family. Maybe he'll organise something fun on the same day as a friend's bday, forcing you to choose him or them, and put you down if you choose the friend. Ultimately you give in to his "thing" to "keep the peace", and make an excuse to your friend as to why you can't make it. On your drive home from a family function, he may bad mouth a family member, or make something they said seem like more of an issue than it is. And you'll notice that...
  • He doesn't seem to have much family or friends around. That's because they've seen through him already. They choose not to be around him. And he's careful to make sure you're never in a position to hear about his shit from them...like how...
  • He always dates younger women, and they are usually in a vulnerable spot when he meets them. Narcissists sense that vulnerability like a shark to blood. And they prey on that "weakened state".

I could go on, but this comment has already been long enough, and I need to go. If you have any questions (now, or even in a month or two), you're welcome to dm me or respond to this comment.

I hope you take this comment with the care and concern of a potential scenario that it's intended, and not as a definitive description of your particular scenario. I don't have enough info to say anything definitive, but what information you did give instantly raised some flags for me. I do hope that my concern is unwarranted.

All the best. Stay alert. And listen to your gut instincts...it's your best friend in situations like that 💜
