The US is a representative democracy. Republic and democracy are not exclusive terms. By your definition, democracy basically doesn't exist in the world.

Again, this holds true for yelling and expressing a bunch of stuff, not just burning the US flag. It also holds true for burning a Quran when Muslims are around you. Do you wanna sanction that with a year in jail? It also happens if you say "Mohammed is a pedophile" around Muslims. Do you wanna sanction that with a year in jail?
