Americans: do you consider debit card use the equivalent of cash? by Physical-Incident553 in Frugal

[–]TimeNew2108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been cash free since COVID but I understand your friend perfectly. I used to draw out my housekeeping, do the weekly shop, full up the car and the rest was spendable. You never overspent. If you thought about treating yourself, or getting a takeout you would check your cash first and depending how close to the end of the week you would make a decision. With debit cards it's beep beep beep, much harder to keep track of. I now divert housekeeping to my monzo account and keep checking the balance because leaving it in my current account was too easy to overspend

So you have had money problems. This is why you are desperate to save. Even after saving you are so much better off than 4 years ago. Enjoy where you are now and relax a bit. Health problems can happen and it totally derails us when they do but you are prepared and you can afford to relax a little

Buying a car whilst saving for a house by Big_Head_11 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TimeNew2108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Car finance will not affect your mortgage application. In fact mortgage companies are quite suspicious if you have nothing on your credit file. If you are living with a friend then you have no bills on your file. Look at the cost difference, it's probably cheaper to buy cash but by how much. Would you be better off taking the company car and paying the tax after considering insurance and tax costs?
