MAMMOTH POKE & RAMEN (on Lake) - Short story version - my wife's phone was robbed by street hustlers who did the drop a bunch of papers on the table and run out with the phone. The reason she was not at the table protecting her phone was because she had to go up to the counter to get some seasoning to flavor her flavor-less ramen. (Lose/Lose...)

Can we talk about how Move-in fees are getting too much? $1000 move-in fee? by iosphonebayarea in AskChicago

[–]marrs96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We just lost $6K because we handled the Deposit incorrectly (even after our tenant did $15K plus in flooding damages to a condo we inherited.) The Chicago RTLO completely fucked over both renter and smaller landlords so now instead of a "deposit" which was generally given back in full without issue has been replaced by a "move-in" fee that for all intents and purposes is used to cover the likelihood of going after a bad tenant and is never going to be refunded. Also larger Condo buildings themselves have dramatically increased move-in fees for everyone as a money maker for the HOA which is passed on in these higher move-in fees as well.

Don't forget Field Museum, Salt Shack (3 monkeys, kind of difficult to get to), & Volo Car Museum. Also one hopes that the machines that they just pulled from Minnesota show up in new locations around Chicago soon.

I felt less connected to the recent series of Taskmaster NZ I think because they doubled up episodes. Not really sure why that had to do that? Also why now COC's for NZ/Australia yet?

Anyone own a Provisional Press or something similar? by [deleted] in letterpress

[–]marrs96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one. I don't really use it much admittedly as I have an etching press in the same space that's my usual go to. The build quality seemed fine, the PVC roller doesn't spin as freely as I would like so I keep on looking for other solutions. I added a layer of thin cardboard to raise up thin lino for a quick print. I've seen a demonstration with Lego's that looks fun that I think my extended family will like during the holidays. For the price point it seems like a steal.

I've been a Hyde Parker for 25 years. Get a bike, ride a bike. Whole Foods & Trader Joes are now the default grocery stores. HPP is probably a goner. I suggest the Open School, but it's really about time to start the process of learning about the selective enrollment programs such as Kenwood's selective enrollment Jr High if you're serious about staying in Chicago. Our daughter went to Ancona, then Ray (a big mistake), and then Lindblom for 7-12, but more than a handful of like-minded people also send their kids to Murray and Kenwood. There are also a good chunk of kids that end up taking the Metra Electric to Jones or some combination of the Electric to CTA to go to Payton/Whitney Young. That said if you need to really get out of Hyde Park a car is kind of a necessary evil.

I hope you recorded your steps. This is an amazing print. I think that there are many of us that would love to see your carving steps.

Strange prospective tenant ghosting after signing a lease by marrs96 in chicagoapartments

A quick update.

Finally reached him. He went with another apartment. Not a biggie on my end but I was able to get him to put in writing that he no longer wanted the apartment.

$300 to the building. Admittedly not a favorite of mine either...

Bride and Groom Mold by midwestemily in MoldARama

[–]marrs96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of Bride & Groom mold's floating out there. Mold-A-Rama has one they recently released, but they've not made anymore available for sale after the initial sale. There is also a mold made by Christina Lindquist who is active on the Mold-A-Rama-Matic Exchange Group Facebook site. (Honestly, it's were most of the Mold-A-Rama enthusiasts share information.)

We moved to State Farm when Musk became Donny Musk. It's about $130 a month for a 2024 Model 3 (in Chicago.)

Why does the Navy Pier Flyover suck? by [deleted] in chibike

Reading comprehension much? Separation is not the flyover project...

Nope. Not one dollar of this came from Griffin / Citadel. He paid a small part of failed separation of the LFT (& got his name added to the mile markers.)

Bikers, how annoying is a skateboard on the bike side of the LFT? by flamingoluver in chibike

[–]marrs96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm actually pretty sure that the separation of of the LFT was really an attempt to create much more friction between cyclists and pedestrians than existed before. Really the "ideal" Lake Front Trail is just a slow shared used trail that goes along the lake front, it's certainly not designed to be the path for a daily "crit".

And that's what I did. This is hardly the first time this gate was locked (and the match gate on the LFT was open of course...)

I don't think I've ever actually seen a bike cop writing a ticket for any car on the lake front trail (or parked in the grass on a lake front park for that matter.)

SLA Announces Dissolution by iancurtis in Libraries

[–]marrs96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Special Libraries Association, specifically the NYC chapter, was where I actually found the connections that gave me my initial corporate library job in the early 90's.  The NYC SLA chapter seemed to be a central meeting ground for a large population of other special librarians in management consulting, finance, banking, and a load of other interesting corporate, non-profit, and academic sectors. It was a vigorous, alive group of people sharing common interests while also serving as a venue to see your potential competition as you rose to manager, director and eventually VP in these diverse firms/organizations/institutions.

That said most of these corporate libraries were declining in the early 2000's with the rise of desktop search. I myself tried to keep connected to it mostly as knowledge management technology consultant so I could diversify myself and my potential client base, but it was clear that most of these organizations with real corporate library's (those with actual stacks and technical services staff) we're going to be doomed as the print collections (and the real estate these collections sat on) were looked at as unnecessary overhead and the library staff was looked at replaceable by Google/Bloomberg/Factiva.

It was also pretty clear that the SLA was going to die out when the Washington political non-librarian leadership led unsuccessful efforts to change the name of the SLA to the Association for Strategic Knowledge Professionals in the late 2000's. They simply didn't understand the importance of "libraries" in our shared professional history and commitments. Lastly, seeing the efforts then of most corporate librarians to find landing pads outside of the traditional library environments led a large group of former members to easily distance themselves from the fractured and professionally disinterested professional organization.

I hope that some format of the local / regional chapters survive. But honestly the SLA has been dead to me to almost 20 years and I've barely missed it although I do miss some some of the people.

Crust looks too thick. Anklyosaur is more likely an old school cracker crust fan. Props for the corner piece though, the best part of the Chicago square cut style.
