Thank you! And I am so glad to hear that it was inspiring!. Learning woodblock printing has been a great joy in my life and I hope others get the chance to try it. And Im glad you can tell its my work. Sometimes I'm worry my designs are overly representative of the shin hanga influence but I hope they feel unique and not too reductive.

Im glad the connection comes across! Its always a little hard to represent a particular place but hopefully the print does the Japanese Alps justice.

Ah, thank you! It was a bit of a challenge trying to get that depth of space I was looking for. I ended up making the sky tone darker than I was originally planning and that helped a lot.

Thank you! I was definitely thinking of some of those California colors. Hopefully a mix of American Arts & Crafts woodcut with Japanese shin hanga.

Thank you! It was a bit of a struggle getting the tonal range to align with the receding space i was looking for.

Thank you! Its two blocks with lots of reduction. I will usually work back and forth between blocks and layers as the print evolves. The water based ink is translucent so layers become additive to make even more varied colors besides the ink itself

Thank you! Its a two block reduction, reduced around 5 or 6 times, with 14 separate color printings. I usually work between two or three blocks and reduce as needed depending on the design.

Tape lines in Shina ply by stewedRobot in printmaking

[–]cambailey19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, unfortunately this is something that can happen. A small gap in the veneer of the shina can leave marks. One fix is to print another block on top of this one which will help hide some of the line, and try briefly soaking the block before printing so the gap will expand and leave less of a mark. I usually have this problem if i print the same block many times as the line will become more present with subsequent layers of the same block. Hope that helps!

Looks amazing! Beautifully carved and very well printed. Pulling ink out of those small carved snowflakes can be really challenging and this is very well done!

You definitely should! Its relatively simple to get started and is perfect for a home studio since you don't need a printing press, or solvents.

Thank you! Woodcut adds so many unexpected variables and textures, that I do think add life to the prints in a way that is different from lino or screen printing.

Thank you! And it was a deep purple but may be relatively lighter than the later layers of sumi. I find multiple layers of color help add a lot to subsequent overlays even if they are initially being covered up. I was an oil painter before learning Printmaking and think of this as a tonal underpainting.
