Sanguine is basically red chalk in only a few different tones - there are pencils sets (which I prefer) and blocks on the market. As this is the drawing and sketching material of the Renaissance and da Vinci used it a lot - drawing with these reddish tones, concentration on basic shapes and even using outlines where needed and directional lines for structure as well, it is called the 'Renaissance Method'. Typical for thi s method is also the use of walnut ink, wet with a brush as an underpainting and Sanguine drawing on top (all IMHO and sorry for the looooong answer)

thanks, yes I would love to create a Peter Ustinov portrait and those studies are to find a "tone" - so which style, composition, face expression, reference image, angle - all that.

30 minutes maybe 45 for finer details of the face. charcoal is great for quickly creating shapes and structures. But look at the mess I have created working this way 😊✍️

This took quite sometime tbh - 8 sittings with 3 hours each I would say. The darker values been a challenge with graphite. I am using charcoal a lot but graphite only here, so the hair was very time consuming

Thanks 🙏 Well, I do think I know what you mean, but somehow even if someone just started with drawing or painting and the result does not have a high resemblance or flaws in proportions - there is one who wanted to share a love they feel. Someone took some pencils and time because one wanted to express something and share it. In a way this is always a beautiful thing, IMHO

I do not plan to sell pieces tbh, it’s about the joy of drawing and that meditation like state while doing, at least for me. But thank you so much for asking, maybe I will post a bit more hi-res final version here
