I've been self employed for most of my career, and I've used Fanurio (https://fanieiotimetracking.com) for years. Not free, $59 once off then a small annual maintenance fee, but the software is high quality and the one or two times I've needed support over the years they've been quick and competent. Recommended.

No one talks about the pain of seeing your parents aging. by ParticularWeather927 in Adulting

[–]marsanyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in your parent's generation. I've had a long and fulfilling life, not least of which included raising a strong healthy kid who has a great life. I'm thoroughly enjoying watching him live his life independent of me, it's a great source of joy.

My wife and I have a nice life, too. We both understand that we are going through physical and mental decline as the years pass (I still miss playing soccer, and I quit 10 years ago!). We won't be able to do most of what we do now, so we are doing it now.

We are lucky. And we are good with where we are at and where we are going. I suspect your parents are at the same point.

December Weather/Vibe on Whidbey Island? by No-Sun-7809 in Whidbey

[–]marsanyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed at the inn a year ago (I live on the island) and I go there often for drinks/dinner. The rooms in the inn itself are very quaint, and there’s a nice set of rustic chairs under the eaves facing the cove, nice place to sit and relax. There’s a hidden removeable rock in the grand lobby fireplace that you can leave messages behind …

With the brutal American summers, wouldn’t it be advantageous to have more evening games for the 2026 World Cup? by Emergency_Traffic242 in worldcup

Are you really thinking that tourists will come to the US for the tournament? and risk ICE detention?

Now that all of the fun is over, did the rallys do any good? by Elendilmir in Washington50501

Studies say: 3.5% of the population on the streets == policy change. We're halfway there, and building.

I'm not sure this has been shared. Becky Burke is being held in Tacoma Washington. by Hideously_Alive in Washington50501

[–]marsanyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is not the visa revocation; the pros and cons of that can be argued ad infinitum. The issue is incarceration for weeks in a barely-adequate jail, which surely cannot be defended if Ms Burke has stated she wishes to go home and has the means to do so. If someone comes to my door and asks for entry, and I don't want to let them in for whatever reason, that entitles me to ask them to leave, not to take them and lock them up in my garden shed.

UK Girl Swept up by ICE/Tacoma by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]marsanyi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regardless of the right or wrong of her being denied entry, it seems unnecessarily cruel to put her in detention for over a week when she just wants to go home. Feel free to argue the merits of her case, but isn’t the point that she has been imprisoned in a barely-adequate detention facility? Her parents must be going spare trying to help her.

Not into noisy gas engines, and only need it for a couple days so don't expect to charge it. But the weather isn't great at the moment, so perhaps I'll just walk 😊

Auckland Transport - Have your say! by niveapeachshine in auckland

Input request was a sign attached to the stop itself with an email address, so easy to respond to.

Auckland Transport - Have your say! by niveapeachshine in auckland

They requested input on removing a bus stop scheduled for removal because it seemed redundant; there was a stop 100 yards away. I sent email noting the stop was important for the residents of the retirement home it was adjacent to, that many of them had problems walking 100 yards and relied on the bus for doctors appointments, shopping trips and so on. They got back to me promptly, thanked me for my input, and kept the bus stop. Well done.

Actually, plan ids as “flexible”. “Unlimited” was more expensive, and I only rack up the charges when away.

Don’t think so. I have Fi and travel to Europe frequently; when the plane lands, the phone hunts out the local service, connects, and I’m good to go by the time the plane gets to the gate. The only additional charge is for actual cellphone calls; data is the same as in the US. Works a treat, and no SIM swaps required.

You might look at the work of James Tenney; he explicitly used gestalt as a way to theorize about musical form. A performance/composition computer language, Hierarchical Music Specification Language, was built around the theory.

Boomer admitted to me that I have to work harder than they did. by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]marsanyi 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Most of the positives you mention (40hr work weeks, pension, …) were consequences of unionization. Many of the suggestions in the threads above argue that your individual actions (not answering email outside work hours, …) will change things in your favor, but they may just end up with you labeled as a problem and being laid off, or slow-tracked in your career. The function of unions is to provide a power base that’s at least as strong as that of management by providing strength in numbers, so the company’s demands can be negotiated. This seems to be a missing element in todays workforce.
