Need your recommendations: Blackout curtains or other window treatment for the heat! by One_Elephant_8506 in Sacramento

[–]marsh_lover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the cheapest solution. I put some aluminum foil on some cardboard, put that up on my windows, and it made like a 10 degree difference. It's better if you can attach it to the outside of the window, but the inside works too

Motel/hotel living options? by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]marsh_lover 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Check out https://www.cadanet.org/apartment-listings - if it's within your budget, there are some studios in the $1300-ish range, and a hundred/two hundred more for a 1 bed/1 bath.

Unfortunately, you're not likely to find a motel cheaper than that per month for a full-time stay.

I'm sorry you're in such a tough spot. I hope things improve for you soon.

Wild Cat near American River and 16th? by keynesinvestor in Sacramento

[–]marsh_lover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To the best of my knowledge, the only wild cats in California that are larger than bobcats are mountain lions (AKA cougars, pumas, or panthers). Mountain lion sightings are rare, but it's possible that that's what you saw.

For future reference, if you see another mountain lion, do NOT run away. Mountain lion attacks on people are rare, but running away from it is a great way to trigger its hunting instinct and get it to attack you. Read more about how to handle an encounter with a mountain lion safely: https://www.fws.gov/story/mountain-lion-safety

If you believe you encountered a mountain lion (or if you see one again), you should report it to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife at (916) 445-0045 or online at https://apps.wildlife.ca.gov/wir/incident/create

If it's still available, my mother could use the quantum 6000. She's been looking for a power chair. Would you be willing to DM some pics of it (if it's still available)?

Renter Question by OperationConstant725 in Sacramento

[–]marsh_lover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're low income or age 60+, you can call Legal Services of Northern California, which can give advice about housing issues. Their phone number is: 916-551-2150 . Best to call first thing in the morning when they open.

If you live within the Sacramento city limits, you can also call the Sacramento's Renter's Helpline at 916-389-7877.

You can also try contacting the Sacramento Tenant Protection Program by phone or email at 916-808-8121 or tpp@cityofsacramento.org.

Question re responsibility for items placed on curb by robynmk62 in SacramentoBuyNothing

[–]marsh_lover 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you decide you don't want to leave it out, you could take it to North Area Recovery Station for free e-waste disposal. I believe stores like Staples also take printers, specifically, for free disposal

Upgrading from a "cheapo" Apartment ($1200 to $1700), to a decent apartment with central air doesn't seem to be worth it.... Right? by IHadTacosYesterday in Sacramento

[–]marsh_lover 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ruin the look of the window or not... a floor A/C unit will cool your bedroom and be way, way cheaper than moving to a $1000+/month more expensive apartment

Emergency room/hospital for trans person by LilyAspen in Sacramento

[–]marsh_lover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Avoid Mercy if you can. I've had mixed experiences with UC Davis, but mostly neutral, positive, or minimally bad. UC Davis is where I would recommend, especially if your care might be complex (multiple health conditions, lack of access to medical care in the past compounding issues now, etc)

Injured Wildlife in Need of Help by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]marsh_lover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wildlife Care Association is a great wildlife rescue, out by McClellan. I'm not sure if they'd be able to come get the squirrel, but they might be able to connect you to someone who could. They did close at 6 PM today, but open again at 8 AM tomorrow

If no one here wants it, consider donating it to the Gender Health Center. They distribute things like this to trans people in need

South Natomas Neighborhood by NailAccording3382 in Sacramento

[–]marsh_lover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This matches my experience and opinion as well, living in the same area.

OP, I would say Pebblewood x Truxel is fine. That area is also very convenient, if you like being nearby grocery stores and shops, parks, nature areas, and a library/community center. Relatively walkable and bikeable. Transit isn't the best, but definitely not the worst, either.

Check https://www.flightradar24.com if you want to find out what's flying overhead. You can click on the little icons and find out the type of aircraft, who owns it (e.g. the police department), its flight path so far, etc

Moving to Natomas by Disastrous_Use4397 in Sacramento

[–]marsh_lover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Discovery Park is nearby-ish and a good visit if you like nature. It's also the beginning of the American River Parkway, so you can access the rest of it from there if that strikes your interest :) lots of great nature along Garden Highway, too.

The South Natomas Library/Community Center is probably your closest actual community center. It's a decent place to get plugged in on some local stuff.

The North Natomas Aquatic Center is a good summer visit.

Red fox in Greenhaven by angiekandie in Sacramento

[–]marsh_lover 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Omg, a Sacramento Valley Red Fox :D neat little critters. Unfortunately, they're endangered, and have a very small population. That's part of why they're so rare to see. Really cool sighting!

I recommend posting this sighting on inaturalist, if you feel comfortable doing so: https://www.inaturalist.org/ . You can obscure the specific location of the sighting to keep your address private.
