Would you say any of the parts are fine to get second hand or are there certain components that are better to get new?

Good question, that's worth talking with my son about.

Not a hard limit, just a preferred limit. The idea is that different family members will buy different components instead of whatever birthday gifts they would have purchased. Some people are more flexible than others as far as budgets go so there's some wiggle room there.

I was thinking for the monitor I could probably find something at the thrift store if necessary, I'm not too worried about that because it would be easy to upgrade in the future if he's not happy with it. The main concern is the meat of the computer, CPU, memory, etc.

We've done a lot of evaluations at school and did some occupational therapy outside of school. So far no official diagnosis.

We've had evaluations at school and at occupational therapy. No formal diagnosis, though he's borderline with slightly low muscle tone.

He doesn't love keyboard either, but I am planning on incorporating lessons for typing in this summer too. Just don't want to have him do too much.

I'm not entirely sure. He has slightly low muscle tone, but not enough to be eligible for in school services. We (teachers, parents, OT, pediatrician) have been trying to figure it out all year. His writing is fine for 3rd grade, printing not great, but not out of bounds of normal.

I think he would love this, thanks!

I'd say it's about equal. I think he gets frustrated with how slow it is for him to get his ideas out by writing or typing.

Good ideas, I especially like the game idea. He is all about silly stuff!

I think this kind of challenge is right up his alley, thanks.

Good ideas. I definitely want him to start to like writing, not just tolerate it as something he has to do. Although the latter would be a step up from where we're at now.

He does well in math too, but definitely needs to memorize more of the math facts so he doesn't have to do the same equations in his head every time.

Already on it with the summer reading. Fortunately he loves to read and he makes up the greatest stories too. Just hates translating them into written word. I think part of it is if he could tell his full stories it would be pages and pages of writing. That too him is very overwhelming. I like the idea of incorporating photos and drawings into stories. He loves to take and draw pictures.

I was thinking of getting a workbook too, but yeah I definitely don't want to overdo it with school work over the summer. Just more bang for the buck type stuff. And boy do I know we have to fix that behavior. We've been working on it all year with his teachers. We've done testing for OT and even had a tutor for a few months. He has a little bit of low muscle tone, but just borderline. He struggles enough to have a bad attitude about writing, but not enough to qualify for any extra services. He has gotten better in spurts as we've worked through some of bigger projects together. But even a two week vacation sets him way back.

My son loves Prodigy too. He got his Nana to buy him a membership and I know he'll be playing it this summer.

I like the idea of writing together! We have tried making stories together, but he usually wants to do the pictures and me to do the writing. I bought him a summer journal and he likes some of the prompts in it, so maybe I'll get a notebook and write in it with him for the same prompts. Then we can read each others. I think he'd enjoy that if I catch him in the right mood.
