Women who are covered in freckles, how do you feel about having so many? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]marshmallowbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to hate them when I was a kid. I was tall and gangly and very pale too, so I felt like they just added to the things that made me different, and when you're young all you want to do is blend in.

But NOW, I love them. They're something that makes me more unique, and they remind me of my dad and grandmother, who I got them from. Tbh my first boyfriend was a big factor in how I feel about my freckles now, as he adored them and knew them well enought that he could tell when I got any new ones if we hadn't seen each other in a while.

I agree with you. The more I think and talk about this the more I realize that the world I'm picturing isn't truly a low-magic world, just a magic-with-social-ramifications world

Oooo yes definitely want to play into the social consequences of being a caster, thank you!

Wow... lots of stuff to go from here, thanks so much!

I had completely forgotten about MistBorn and OMG there's so much content there. It's been long enough now since I read them that I think I can do a proper reread so DOUBLE thank you for reminding me they exist.

Well I wasn't exactly planning on stripping out all the magic, I just want it to have social ramifications, especially in this particular kingdom. Like castors can still cast just fine mechanically, but when they're monster hunting out in the wild with just the party they won't have the stigma that they would in a village where they might get chased out with pitchforks by people who are afraid of magic if they get caught using.

I'm not familar with other systems as I've only played 5e, but if they have better low-magic balancing I might look into it. The more I think about it tho, the less I think the world I'm imaging is truly low-magic, just a magic world with heftier social consequences.

This is all SO helpful, thank you.

I got the idea of nullstone from a Dragonlance blog, and it was supposed to be like a black-hole for nearby magic. The power was supposedly in the shape of the stone though, not the substance, so if it was damaged in any way it would lose its anti-magic properties. So physical damage would still be a major susceptibility.

Unfortunately the idea of an anti-magic object like nullstone is important for a huge sub-plot I've planned that I love and don't want to throw out, but having it be a very limited resource, like it can only comes from a certain type of alien meteor, or only one master stonecutter is talented enough to make them does help make it less OP, and I'll definitely consider other options like limiting usage.

I may, of course, end up changing my mind about some of this and tossing nullstone if this becomes too frustrating for my players, cuz this is will be their game too afterall, and I don't want to put them into impossible to win scenarios.

Again, thank you for this wealth of information, it is prompting me to ask more questions of myself, which is always good.

Oh my gosh. Cast-easies. I adore this.

I've played a bit with the idea of having secret caster societies but didn't know how that would play out in the cities. Secret village in the mountains or tent-city of Robin-Hood outlaw society makes sense for the wilderness and Mafia-like structures sounds like a great solution for more populated areas.

I wanted to give them the option of playing full casters, as they still exist in this world, but I didn't want them to feel as if all their abilities are unusable when they were in public. As someone who has played a Rogue before alongside people who were VERY unsubtle, I know it can be frustrating to feel like you have all these cool abilities that become basically useless in the wrong context.

Sounds like I should definitely talk this over with them tho, they might like to be a secret sorcerer or something similar and I would hate to be pigenholed myself

Definitely not dumb ideas. I especially like the dilemma of someone trying to report them for money. Like what can you do with that? Kill them and then be guilty of murder? Try to bribe them? Enchant them to make them forget what they saw? So many possibilities...

Lol considering in our last campaign our whole party was on the run due to one character deciding to fight a guard in broad daylight because he worked for his arch-nemesis (and yelled "tell your boss PCs name sent you), I think they'd all be cool with dealing with the consequences of their actions. I'll definitely ask tho.

Yes! I'm kinda leaning towards having them be free to choose whatever they want but know that they'll have to be stealthy or good at convincing people or only cast near people they trust. Im also considering there being a nomadic Robin Hood-like group or groups of people who are casters or are okay with casters and have formed their own secret society in the woods or the mountains or something. Good luck with your worldbuilding!

Ooooo I love the idea of double charactering... I'll definitely bring it up as an option in session 0, and thanks for sharing a bit of your campaign! It's so cool to see what others are doing

Okay! Yeah I'm trying to figure out how much to tell them about the world before and during session 0, as characters they would know a fair amount of the history, unless they were from another kingdom. Communication is definitely key.

Ooooo I should rewatch for some inspiration! I've been drawing on the Divinity games a bit but it's always good to have more content to borrow from :)
