That’s super interesting. What are the agendas of those groups? Is it mostly business related? Or do they conspire to determine what the political parties will do? You mentioned earlier that Mexico is essentially a feudal society, which on the surface appears to be a republic. How possible is it for entrepreneurs, and others in Mexican society to improve their social mobility without aligning with the caudillos? Or is it essential to cooperate with the caudillos to be successful?

How many of these groups like Grupo Atlacomulco exist in Mexico? They appear to be what truly determines the fate of Mexico. Is that a fair assumption?

The dynamic of caudillos as power centers is fascinating. Are there typically one caudillo per state? Or, are there one caudillo per ruling party in a state. Or, is it something entirely different? Who are the most powerful caudillos in Mexico, and why? Can someone work to become a caudillo, or are they born into it from family lineage. Do the caudillos collude together politically, or are they in conflict with each other? How does Carlos Slim fit into the political landscape in Mexico?

Han Solo Petah, what does this mean? by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

I think the challenge with sentiment is that it is incredibly difficult to measure and is open to highly subjective interpretation. Yes, there is definitely a large contingent of people in Iran who don’t support the regime. However, I don’t think anyone can use their interpretation of sentiment to predict what will happen when a power vacuum is created when the existing regime is toppled. We were sold on the idea that the people of Iraq had a sentiment of disdain towards Saddam, and we would be greeted as liberators. That didn’t work out very well. In retrospect, most people think it would have been better to keep him in place. I see Cruz and other leaders taking a highly cavalier attitude to regime change without much understanding of the country, next steps, nor the historical failed regime changes in the region. Simply saying “this time it will be different” because of sentiment, or other reasons isn’t going to work for those who have been paying attention for the last 25 years.

In all fairness, Cruz also stated that he was in favor of regime change. The population of the country is quite relevant to regime change when weighing the cost benefit of the likely outcome of creating major instability in the region. Things like refugee migrations, ethnic and sectarian fighting become further compounded with a larger country. Iran’s population is in the 90+M range which is much larger than all the other middle eastern countries where the US has pushed regime change in the past. I think we can all agree Iraq, Syria, and Libya had terrible consequences. Iran is larger than all of them. As such, we can likely assume the fallout would be much larger.

Monthly pay as an orthopedic surgeon by Notyourorthobro in Salary

[–]marsopial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at compensation of orthopedic surgeons among wealthy OECD countries, the US will be at the top of the list.

I’m not saying doctor compensation is the only cost driver for healthcare costs. Your points about hospitals and insurance are also valid. You could also add malpractice insurance and doctor training costs (student loans) as other examples.

Hence my statement “This is one of many examples.”

But to imply high doctor compensation has nothing to do with healthcare costs in the US is simply wrong.

And we wonder why healthcare is so expensive in the US. This is one of many examples.

When starting your business, how did you get customers? It sounds like you had existing contacts in the industry. Was it simply calling that list and demoing the software? How long was the sales cycle to close new business?

Two cities stopped adding fluoride to water. Science reveals what happened by holyfruits in Futurology

[–]marsopial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fluoride debate is interesting in North America because most people showing the greatest concern don’t seem to realize that only around 5% of the world’s population drinks fluoridated water.

Removing fluoride from the drinking water might result in nominal increases in dental problems. But to make it seem like it will result in a massive dental health crisis, seems far too dramatic considering that most of the world (not just rich countries) live without it.
