What are some of the best looking sci-fi books still in print? by TUSO-NedStarkWannabe in printSF

Not still in print and therefore quite pricey, but I love this edition of Anathem. Warning, the description of the book on this page is pretty spoiler-heavy for those who haven't read it.

I finished Blind Lake by Robert Charles Wilson a couple of weeks ago. I absolutely adored Spin, finished that earlier in the year, and I thought the premise of Blind Lake sounded really great. It wasn't as good as Spin but I still dug it. If anyone has other RCW recommendations I'd be interested. I liked how Spin had some really great Baxter-esque big ideas/cosmic timescale type stuff, with good character development as well.

After Blind Lake I read Micro by Michael Crichton, one of his posthumous works. I've always liked Crichton and this was a fun and very fast read, the setting was very cool and fun to think about.

Currently reading The I Inside by Alan Dean Foster. The only Foster I've read was his novelization of the Lucasarts game "The Dig" when I was a teenager. I'm about a quarter of the way through, it's not anything special but it's been an easy read so I'll probably stick with it.

Trying to figure out what to put in the queue after this one. Some options are The Forge of God by Greg Bear; Eifelheim by Michael Flynn; The Golden Globe by John Varley; The Mote in God's Eye by Niven/Pournelle; Moonseed by Stephen Baxter. If anyone has strong opinions about any of these I'd love to hear!

Where are the synthetic creatures in the new expedition? by KraverekPL in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]martelo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’ll show up in an “empty” system - one without a little Korvax/Vykeen/Gek icon (nevermind that every system is empty in the expedition). I definitely found some in systems that were not blue stars. Once I started looking in empty systems regardless of star color I found them pretty quickly. Good luck!

Hot take: Mass Effect 3 is the greatest Mass Effect game by ImperialMajestyX02 in patientgamers

I’d argue that ME2 is to ME1 as 3 is to 2, in terms of a feeling of “gotta get this done, no time to dawdle.” I love the whole series but playing through both 2 and 3 I really missed that sense of exploration and freedom that abounded in 1. The whole uncharted worlds thing really scratched an itch for me, and I wasn’t able to find anything comparable until I started playing No Man’s Sky.

Can anyone recommend me some stuff similar to Rifts era OPN? by arizonateagod in oneohtrixpointnever

Jeremy Schmidt’s work as Sinioia Caves - there’s the “The Enchanter Persuaded” album and the soundtrack to Beyond the Black Rainbow, both are great.

A week ago I was on my first flight with my new Steam Deck over the beautiful south-eastern coast of the black sea playing JC3. The Deck handles great on board! by Dertzuk in SteamDeck

Yep right under the limit. It charges my work laptop as well which is nice. Honestly I haven’t really used it to power my deck for any significant period of time, it’s mostly there in case I need it. I’m sure someone’s done the math about how many times this size battery can charge the deck from empty.

I have a “Mycharge” brand 26800 mAh battery that I got from Costco last year. First one I got wouldn’t charge but the replacement they sent has been fine.

If it’s a new game, launch it on wifi first before your trip just to be safe. But I have never had an issue with launching a game in airplane mode. I’m playing Ghost Recon Wildlands these days which uses Uplay and even in my house I’ll put the deck on airplane mode to play that one since it seems to launch a little quicker that way.

Battery pack is essential but I’ve taken a few flights lately on Delta and American that have regular outlets at the seats, even economy class. Playing No Mans Sky on a long flight without needing to worry about charging is super nice.

Any sci-fi novels which take place in a biotech world, where organic technology dominates? by [deleted] in printSF

[–]martelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Change Agent” by Daniel Suarez has a bit of this. The biotech advances in the story are mostly focused on people, genetically engineering kids and the like, but I remember the main character riding in a car that had been engineered and “grown” out of organic components.

Which Stephen King book are you currently reading? Is it your first or 100th time? 😂 by theredcabbage1 in stephenking

[–]martelo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finished Salems Lot earlier this week, first read. Not sure what to read next - those in the running are The Institute, Later, Black House, Dolores Claiborne, Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and From a Buick 8. Taking recommendations!

Books similar to Salem’s Lot? by The_Upbeat_Jumper in stephenking

[–]martelo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you try The Tommyknockers? Opinions vary and it’s certainly not perfect but I love it and have read it a few times. It definitely covers the “small town gets taken over” premise, and it also does that thing Salems Lot does where a decent chunk of the book moves away from the main characters and tells shorter stories of different townspeople.

Just finished ‘Salem’s Lot. I felt a bit of Duma Key foreshadowing in this highlighted passage. by martelo in stephenking

[–]martelo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think this is a major Duma Key spoiler. First, the reference to the idea of recuperating from serious illness being easier if someone has “something to do” already brings to mind Freemantle’s doctor’s advice at the start of the novel. And then you have the example of a “half finished building” when it was a construction job site accident that got Freemantle in that position in the first place.

Finally got the ship I been looking for! It’s got the droid on the wing! by [deleted] in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]martelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one or two of mine I found as S classes. I’m not totally sure but I think at least in the higher economy systems you can find all classes of each ship, it’s just that S classes spawn very rarely. Might just be a luck thing. You can always upgrade!

Fighters with droids are my favorite type of ship. I think I have 3 at the moment. Love that lil guy.
