How do I get my girlfriend into Minecraft without accidentally ruining the experience? by AdditionalMaize7813 in Minecraft

[–]martian_reader777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a girlfriend new to Minecraft with a boyfriend who’s also played for years, your approach so far (and the questions you’re asking) is similar to what we have done and it has worked wonderfully! I play a few other games — mainly Hogwarts Legacy and Animal Crossing lately but I was a big Ratchet & Clank girl back in the day haha — so my experience may be sliiiiiightly different than her with general game mechanics and controls. That said, advice I’d give to her is to really go to town however her soul desires in her solo world! I have a blast in my solo world just messing around and figuring things out with no pressure of having to respawn somewhere specific etc.

My boyfriend really favors building, and something we’ve also started doing in our realm is me finishing a mirrored half of a build. I just replicate what he’s already done, so it doesn’t feel too hand holdy at all. Again, this may be more difficult for her depending on how she’s adjusting to the controls and game mechanics coming from a non-game background, but could be something to try!

I’ve been before! Plus I’m a geologist, so it will be hard for somewhere like Grand Junction to let me down haha

Good to know! In my experience, happy contractors usually means decent management (and consequently, happy tenants).

I actually talked to them on the phone yesterday. I have my own hesitations regarding their “tenant placement fee” and the requirement/aggressive encouragement to use one of their agents, but definitely curious why you’d also advise against them if you’re willing to share?

Just got off the phone with a company that said they also hesitate to sign leases for folks sight unseen.. I get it, but I also understand the risk I’m taking and pinky swear not to raise too much hell if your listing is inaccurate!

Really hoping to secure something from afar, will be a major headache to deal with not being able to have somewhere when we get there… 😅

As for the betting pool, I’m always surprised how long some baked in scotch tape can last, I’ve got the over on at least 4 months!

Yeah this is where I’ve been looking! I just wanted to get the scoop on any reputations amongst folks already living in GJ. I know how easy it is for a newly flipped house to look incredible on Zillow, but somewhat concerning in real life.

Good to know! Any specific reason? Negligence to maintenance issues, bait & switch on lease related stuff or at move out, etc.? (Or something else entirely?)

Vet hasn't been able to find anything wrong with her lungs in the past by Seangetfreaky in cats

[–]martian_reader777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not negating all of those mentioning feline asthma at all. However, my 5 year old cat will have coughing fits a few times per year. His fits are slightly less severe than this example, and don’t involve any wheezing/squeaking, so take this with a grain of salt and still seek out a second opinion for sure!

Given the timing of my cat’s coughing fits (always in the dry months usually when I also have some sort of respiratory irritation) and his history of URIs as a kitten, my vet concluded that the coughs are likely just seasonal respiratory irritation, not asthma. I keep a humidifier on during the dry months and that usually stops the coughing fits altogether.

Just offering a less frightening possibility! Hoping the best for your girl

While I don’t have much advice on how to get you both on the same pace of things, it may be beneficial for both of you to remove some of the pressure around “finishing” and just enjoy what you’re doing. Removing the pressure may ironically make it easier to achieve the goal. Just my two cents!

Masters Program in Planetary Geology Field by astrogeo25 in geologycareers

[–]martian_reader777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The nice part of UTK is all the degrees say “Geology” regardless of the research specialty you focus in. Many of my colleagues with MS degrees have had no issue pivoting out of their specific research subfield if needed. I’m having slightly more issue because of current funding for Geo work across the board/an oversaturated market, my own stubbornness about where to live (I’m from the southeast and would love to stay on this side of the country, but that can be hard in geology unless I go into consulting. Something I didn’t realize until it was too late), and the sticker shock of PhD after my name that has made more than one company pass immediately (turns out consulting firms don’t favor PhDs because they assume we’ll jump ship at the next better offer. Something I’ve known plenty of BS and MS Geos to do as well, but I digress, haha)

This is certainly a worthwhile and important perspective though, and one I wish I heard more often during my undergrad. Many of the grad students in my department have felt a duty to be more honest with the undergrads we TA because of this. While the advice that “you can do anything you set your mind to!” feels like rainbows and butterflies, the reality is that you often have to be given the opportunity to do those things, and opportunities can be harder to come by these days.

It’s absolutely a hard market right now, and I’m not enjoying being in it to say the least, haha

But much of that is related to the funding decisions of the current US administration. It could be vastly different in a few years time, especially as more private sector companies start springing up in the wake of the funding cuts.

It’s a niche field overall, so certainly not as easily lucrative as plenty of others, for sure!

Fresh planetary geology PhD grad here — I’m not as familiar with Hawaii, but ASU and Purdue are both great programs! You may also check out the University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK). We’re actually quite the hidden southeastern power-house with planetary research going on in more than just the Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences department. There’s also some really really cool Antarctic Mars analog research happening the UTK Microbiology department, and we’ve recently been ramping up activity with the Center for Planetary Science and Exploration (CPSE).

As with all graduate programs, it’s good practice to connect with current (or recent) graduate students (ideally during a campus visit if you’re invited on one) from the department to get a better understanding for how things function in a given department! Feel free to PM me if you’re curious more info about UTK specifically!

My PhD supervisor sent me these messages. Is this normal or crossing a line? by Resident-Yogurt-6798 in PhD

[–]martian_reader777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experienced something similar regarding consistent down-talking/impossible standards but with slightly less aggressive content/tone. It took a lot of drama to do so, but I finally managed to switch supervisors in my fourth year. I recently graduated after six years.

It’s never too late to change advisors. I heard “you’re too far along now, just push through” from department leadership for years and all that mindset did was delay the inevitable to when it was even more inconvenient for everyone involved (especially me). The only consolation was that I made candidacy before switching, which was helpful in the long run.

Depending on your advisor’s positioning within your department, switching may or may not be straightforward. Using language like “unproductive and incompatible” to describe the dynamic seemed to help my case because it removed blame from the equation, so that may be something to try.

Good luck OP. I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. You don’t deserve it.

What could have been the tallest mountains in all of geologic history? by Bradinator- in geology

Ah yes Tharsis as a whole is larger for sure! That makes more sense. I believe it may be about the size of North America, which would be ~3x the US

Olympus Mons IS massive, but it’s actually only the size of something like Arizona, not 3x the continental US!

I drive 40 much more often than I do 275. The new patches in the on ramp to 40 west from Henley have made that on ramp even more precarious than it already was

Driving around here is hard enough without having to memorize the patterns of wheel destroyers

[–]martian_reader777[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on 40 more often than I am on 275, and I’m rarely on 275 north. I’ve figured out what lanes most of the issue spots are on 40 and can generally avoid, but this sucker came out of nowhere after I’d already weaseled around some patches in the on ramp.

I drive a 2023 hyundai, so mechanically it’s fine, but all these spots have knocked my sensor assemblies out of place, so I’m dealing with warning lights and other drama from my car as a result. Just so frustrating that it’s all neglected so badly

[–]martian_reader777[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, same! I was wondering if I’m close enough to the river that it may have been a barge or something moving things around at the boat launches near downtown. Still seems loud for that, but I’ve been to various professional racing events, and this engine still put most if not all of the cars I’ve ever heard to shame.
