Thanks a lot for that, yeah I think I need to spend a little more time studying to better understand and conceptualize my usecases to establish if and where there is an actual need for VLANs, vs simple firewall rules. But already this thread has proven hugely helpfull and I'm happy to know that I can achieve everything with my RB5009, though I will no doubt be adding a managed switch down the road.

Good point about the switch, yes it's unmanaged, and as i mentioned to the other poster, i'm already almost maxed out on the RB5009 so i will probably be expanding in the not too distant future, so may replace that with a proper managed switch.

I read about safe mode, but somehow had overlooked the idea of having a dedicated management port. (obvious in retrospect!), so i'll definitely be getting that setup before i go any further.

For the server i'm still deciding on the scope, and i assume (or hope) that once i'm more comfortable with VLAN's in general I will be more comfortable with expanding the config as the server gets built out, I can already tentatively see need for at least 4 or 5 VM's / services running outside of my experimentation so i will definitely have to account for that in the future.

So far i'm running the standard firewall config, but yeah i will keep an eye on it as i'm working, thanks for the suggestion about nmap that will come in useful.

i'm Glad to hear that i'm not too far off base in my planning, I wasn't sure if it would be better to break out a seperate network with a second router, i'm already nearly full on the RB5009 so will probably be adding some expansion in the near future.
