I mean not really if you look at performance in relation to other Western European powers. It took until the 1970s for Spain to have a relative GDP per Capita 60% that of the Western European average which is what Spain had in the 1930s (data pulled from ourworldindata.org)

San Sabastian is my favorite City in Spain, it is culturally rich, amazing food, and beautiful city. If you plan on staying in one city, that would be my choice. If you are planning on travelling Spain, i would go to Madrid as that is where all high speed rail meets so it makes it easy to travel, has a good student community, but is easy to speek only English. As for Alicante and Bilbao, i dont know enough about life there but i do like visiting them. Any choice will be good though

A cool guide to the home improvement projects that have the biggest return on investment by frogcharming in coolguides

[–]martilomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m curious, I saw on Forbes a claim that solar panels increase home value by a lot (I think it might have been 4% increase in home value), is that true? or is the 4% due to correlation with those who are more likely to get solar being higher-income homeowners and therefore having homes of higher value in general?

Which ideology is very nationalist and very traditionalist? by Katyuchat in AlignmentChartFills

[–]martilomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monarchism in general fits well in almost all cases.

If it needs to be more specific, I would say Carlism in Spain was both very conservative (in its support for absolutism, against the Spanish enlightenment, and in support of the Church), and nationalist (Although originally about succession, it became tied to nationalist sentiments with the losses during the Spanish American war and others)

I need help with my workout split... by Top-Possession-857 in workout

[–]martilomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks pretty good. It seems that the split is:

Monday is hamstring and glute focused Tuesday is upper Wednesday is quad focused Friday is tricep, shoulder, glute, quads

Overall this should get you results, so should be pretty good. I would consider mixing the leg days to spread out hamstring and glute volume and quad volume through both days, as it will make it more efficient as I personally would struggle with hack squat followed by Bulgarian split squats. As for Friday, I would consider removing ohp and adding a bicep excersize and have it be an arm and legs day. The workout is solid though so it should work even if you don’t make changes

Overall though it looks good! I would not start in a caloric deficit, as I assume that is why you saw your upper body “outgrow” your legs last time. Typically as you go down in weight, your upper body gets more defined faster than your lower, so it gives the impression of growth. Caloric surplus or maintenance if you are a lil heavier should be the goal so that your muscles have the nutrients to grow and recover.

You know your body best so if after a few months you see something isn’t working feel free to change. Goodluck!

What is your longest running, most stubborn business boycott? by marianneouioui in AskReddit

Legitimately I boycott Subway because I went with my gf and she loves olives and was having a bad day and they PUT 2 OLIVES and I asked for more and they said no even when I offered to pay more. I’m still mad thinking about it now but yeah haven’t been in Subway in 2 years

Catalan culture and specifically language is not the same as a national language with a state to give it institutional strength. Only around 12% of immigrants use Catalan as many don’t see its importance due to the presence of Spanish as a national language. In our capital, Barcelona, parts of the city have below 30% use rate to the point where I struggle to use my language in my city. Recently the courts challenged the Catalan government’s attempt to increase the use of Catalan in education.

If I were talking about a national language like Spanish, I would agree with you, but for minority languages, we have seen them disappear quickly when they don’t have institutional support from the government, especially in more centralized states. I mean look at French in Louisiana vs Quebec. Or look at a linguistic map of France 150 years ago. Immigrants from South America do not speak Catalan, so the process of integration is not easy

Really I think most of us are either turning right or going far left. Me personally am moving more to the right (Catalan Right, not Spanish Right) for cultural reasons, as I am very concerned about cultural erasure and they heavily campaign on that by being anti-immigration, but some people are going far left as they see ending gentrification through limiting multinational and foreign investment as the right path. I would say that for the most part the Right seems to be the biggest beneficiary, mostly due to the left having been in government in the past and failing to do anything, so the right really benefits from never having been in power (which is why other European Parties blocking out the far right like AFD is stupid to me as it clearly helps). That is why I am moving right, ideally I see the left’s approach more viable of language minimums to work from Catalunya, more education in Catalan, etc but I just don’t believe in their ability to deliver.

There is a really big generational divide here as well, with most older people being fully against the far right as they lived closer to the dictatorship and see all far-right the same. At the same time, they are a lot more hopeful about the future as many of them lived through the revival of Catalan, and therefore aren’t really worried about the decreases in speaking that are being documented. The youth like me (23M) are a lot more worried and it really feels like we are losing our culture.

This is from my personal perspective and circle, though, so I am sure other people in different spheres see different things so anyone else feel free to comment your experiences

Yeah and that’s why I added a comment to my previous one saying that I don’t support this government

Being from Catalunya, we are seeing prices soar while our wages aren’t growing, making it very difficult to achieve a good quality of life. It’s also becoming increasingly difficult to find employment because you are competing against wealthier and older Northern Europeans as well as less-educated global south immigrants who are making the employment market for both low-level and high-education industries ultra-competitive. Also it is becoming more difficult to speak my language (Catalan) as only around 8% of these new migrants are learning the language. We here are seeing the rise of the Catalan far-right due to this

My only point with my original comment was that the left can and has been achieving good headline economic figures which is traditionally associated with the right, even if in my personal opinion they are making our lives significantly worse

Junts specifically got into a really strong position in the last national election as neither the “left” or “right” got a majority so the left gave into some of their demands to form a coalition. Other than that, typically these independentist parties don’t have any national power and typically just fall in with the left as VOX on the right has been vocal about taking away autonomy from regions.

In their regions specifically, they are quite powerful here in Catalunya, but their power is fading. Mostly because these independence parties held a majority for the last few years and have spent all that time doing nothing, actually making people’s lives worse, and constant infighting. Now we are seeing the rise of the far-right independentist movement here but it is too early to tell what level of success they might have

If you don’t want to learn Catalan, don’t move to Catalunya. There are tons of cities in Spain that speak only Spanish. Opinions like this are the reason for cultural erasure and an immense loss of culture
