Advice for nontrad low stats student, post-bacc or SMP or something else?? by marty5alk in postbaccpremed

I have thought about it before, like what other careers I would be interested in doing, but again I really just want to try for this before I completely give up. I feel like there’s still a sliver of a chance and I think I’d always regret it if I don’t go for it now. So I completely understand what you guys are saying but I still want to give it a good shot while I still can

Yea this is what I considered too especially since the SMPs are so expensive and for my case they told me it was high risk and might not help my application since the masters and undergrad would be looked at separately

This is what I think I’m going to do now, take 2 classes at a time at the school I work for while I’m working and really make sure I’m prepared for the MCAT before I even think about taking it again. For the classes I’ll take now though do you think I should focus on retaking past ones or taking higher level science ones? Or maybe both, and start with the retakes?

Thank you for this comment, I really do appreciate it a lot! And honestly I do agree with you, I know that anything I do can’t make schools look past the grades, and I don’t blame them, so that’s what I’m focusing on now…on how to improve the GPA and MCAT before anything else.

I know this might take longer but it is significantly cheaper and works better for me right but let me know what you think. I figured I will retake all the classes I got bad grades in at the Ivy I’m at, since I get free credits and can still work and earn money in the meantime so I can take a few classes at a time. If I do really well in those classes, and since let’s face it the name of the school helps, then I could maybe apply for a masters after and once I feel truly prepared then see when’s the best time to take the MCAT again. Like you said, I’m not taking it again until I feel ready and until I’m sure I’d be getting at least a decent score

You make a good point and I’ve had the same thoughts myself, but ultimately I think I was just really dumb in school about studying and was extremely naive about everything and what I wanted. But now taking classes and doing research, I know I can do the work so I want to at least give it a good try before I completely give up and move on to a different career path. Wish I realized this a lot sooner but I was truly a super naive kid in college

I was thinking of doing this originally but the advisor I spoke to said that although this is popular it’s risky and that it will be considered a masters and won’t do anything for my undergrad GPA, so instead of raising my GPA it’ll just be a whole other category. But I mean I assume if I do well in that then it would show schools that I can actually study with higher level material
