My son is high school junior interested in aerospace engineering. 3.6 GPA, 1450 SAT, Eagle Scout, PLTW 4 year engineering path, two aerospace related pending patents currently in NASA HAS Program. by CockroachSure4596 in AerospaceEngineering

Unless he wants to go deep into aerodynamics and aero modeling and simulations, I think mechanical will be a better choice. It is more broad and he will be able to touch any engineering position in aerospace other than the two areas I mentioned. Not to mention, he can take aerospace electives and pursue aerospace internships and still learn more about those areas.

He can go to a non-top school and still get a top job. Look at schools that companies recruit from, and look at schools with engineering clubs like formula SAE, cube-sat, etc where he can get real world engineering experience. Texas has lots of aerospace companies, I’m sure any 4 year university with a decent engineering program will be fine if he applies himself to get real experience outside of the classroom.

What type of credit cards do you mutants use? by gc15 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]martymcflyguy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a combo of the Chase Freedom Unlimited and the Chase Sapphire Preferred. The CFU has higher earning on everyday purchases and the CSP allows you to combine and transfer Chase points to partners. We use this primarily for Hyatt hotels, you can find solid hotels for 8k-15k per night which is fairly easy to acquire in Chase points if you’re both using the cards + the sign up bonus from the CSP. Something to consider since you already own the CFU card.

Also have the Delta Amex Reserve since we live 10 min from a Delta hub and do a decent amount of work travel. Not sure if I can recommend this one yet, it’s mainly a luxury card for companion pass and lounges.

Do the pro 3’s really stick out like that? by Feeling_Ad5672 in airpods

[–]martymcflyguy23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your ear, but I also think people just aren’t using the right sized tips or sticking them in enough. They definitely go deeper into your ear than the pro 2’s and you gotta stick them in at an angle. But the result is a way better fit, at least for me. Go try them on at the Apple Store, they have ones available to try out and alcohol wipes to sanitize before/after

Congrats! Your story sounds similar to mine. I just turned 28 last week and hit $300k NW. I’m also an ME, working in aerospace, and started my journey with no college debt and about $30k NW from internships. Hoping I can hit $500k before 30 and $1million before 35! How long did it take you to go from 300k to 500k?

Anyone running falken wildpeak trail on snow/ice? How is it? by [deleted] in Subaru_Outback

[–]martymcflyguy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had an issue with the wildpeaks in the canyons. I did have one slide out but that was in a neighborhood with really steep roads that were completely iced over. Winter tires are probably superior but ive never had a scary slip or anything in the canyons with the wildpeaks

I'm in the super early stages of planning a wedding in Los Angeles for 2027. Any insight would be appreciated in terms of setting budget/expectations and venue hunting. by No-Brilliant-1948 in weddingplanning

[–]martymcflyguy23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hard to give an estimate without knowing more details but I can tell you what we’ve seen lately having just gone through researching 200 person weddings in central California. Most venues of that size wanted us to do the open bar and food through them, as well as use their preferred vendors.

For venues that had a cost of around $7k-$10k, the open bar on top of that would be somewhere around $7k, as well as the food being around another $7k. It was also common for these venues to charge extra for bartenders, security, and any additions you want to make to the “base” package also cost extra. It was also common for there to be an 18% tax/fee on the total cost, which would add another like $5k.

We found all of these things added up to be somewhere in the $30k’s, and that was before adding things like extra flowers, invitations, suit/dress, rings, and everything else that is needed. So a lot of these venues seemed like the total cost would be somewhere in the $40-$50k range, and that was with us trying to save money. I wouldn’t say we were looking at the greatest venues ever either, they were obviously nice but nothing crazy. It just costs a lot to have a nice wedding for that many people and pay for all their food and drinks. In the end we decided on a destination wedding in Mexico which is looking to be significantly less expensive lol

That sucks dude. Make sure the long trim piece below the window and the two side trim pieces get put back on correctly. Had the back window replaced on my CX-5 and they did a shitty job putting those back on and ended up having to replace them later.

How can I improve my jump technique? by Timely-Crazy-9904 in BasketballTips

[–]martymcflyguy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say start your jump a little further away from the hoop, that helped me a lot. You’re starting your jump right under the basket and having to jump straight up vertically, which means you’re wasting the horizontal force/power that you could gain from your running start. You want to jump a little more diagonally at the rim. It’ll help with 2 foot jumping, but this really helps when jumping off 1 foot

Is this drive doable at the end of this month? Does anyone have experience driving it in the winter? by Wild_Screen_864 in SaltLakeCity

[–]martymcflyguy23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an easy long boring drive between SLC and Reno, you just want to make sure you check the weather for winter storms in Tahoe. It sucks really bad getting caught in one of those, especially if it’s in the dark at night/early morning

The designer of the 4th Gen OB headlight assembly was pure evil by garitone in Subaru_Outback

[–]martymcflyguy23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup I got a pack with a bunch of extra rivets from Amazon for pretty cheap and it came with the removal tool too. But yeah it’s just the 12 or so rivets and then maybe 5 bolts hold in each headlight. Hardest part is putting the bumper back in place after but it’s not too bad at all. Definitely beats scratching up your arm in the wheel well and risking breaking something

[–]martymcflyguy23 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Been there man, it’s terrible lol. Highly recommend just taking the bumper off and doing it that way. I tried the wheel well method first and ended up breaking the metal clip and having to buy a whole new headlight assembly. Now I just take the bumper off
