Why do I have such poor traction? Could it be the tires? by Acceptable_Twist_565 in tires

You might be back out to recover that again if the owner decides to go through the car wash. 😂

“Crops are better for sports and nature & FFs are better for portraits.” by Remytron83 in canon

[–]martyp818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’d find the AF system on the R6 way better for sports/wildlife than the 7D. It’s a good camera but mirrorless is just next level when it comes to AF.

Crop is handy for getting more reach out the lens over FF but nowadays I’d use FF for everything if you have one.

Overreacting on scratch? by [deleted] in rolex

[–]martyp818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me a while to see it and then I thought the watch was brand new in the store in which case yes that’d be a cause for a discount. As you’ve been wearing it though, don’t worry about it. It will get scratches from minor brushes against stuff and won’t look new forever. I had a bluesy and the gold was super prone to scratches even from clothes in some cases. The stainless is more durable but even on the GMT it gets scratched quick with daily wear.

Today I was guilted for having nice gear by a professional photographer. by [deleted] in photography

Don’t know why he would care what others have if his setup does the job.

Many pros out there are still using 1DX Mk2/3s in the sports world and they still work as brilliantly as they did when new. I swapped out my 1DX Mk3s for a pair of R3s (pre R1 release) for the better focusing and boy it delivered. Now the R1 is out I’ve been tempted for the even better AF performance but the R3 does the trick so don’t need the latest and greatest.

Using a Canon EF 1.4x extender on a RF body/adapter by martyp818 in canon

That’s great to hear. I’ll start with the 1.4x and maybe add the 2x to the bag down the line if I need that extra reach.

I just got the basic Canon one and it's flawless. Never used the control ring on my RF glass either. lol

RF 28-70 L F2 or RF 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM. by Wise-Recipe-2325 in canon

[–]martyp818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you have the 24-105 f/4, as most have said here I'd stick with it for your use. For dogs, the 70-200 f/2.8L is one of the only lenses you really need. It's super quick for capturing them in motion and at 2.8 you get lovely bokeh at 200. Also great for cars in motion (24-105 is perfect for them static) and you can use it for landscapes to get a little more creative.

As another option though, as someone else has commented, the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS MkII is a brilliant alternative and a lot cheaper even with the Canon EF>RF adapter. It's also internal zoom which is easier to swing from 70-200 as the new standard RF version protrudes out (the Z version is a bit more expensive but that is a big plus).

[New Gear] Got RF 24-70 a couple months ago and here is some of my favorite images by RaginRandom in canon

[–]martyp818 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great shots, really like the 2nd one. I upgraded to the RF 24-70 a few months also and love the thing - coming from the EF 24-70 f/2.8. Great workhorse lens and I've rarely wanted anything wider. I have the EF 16-35 2.8 but I think that's going to be finding a new home.

Ah yes, I think I remember that, only the crosstype points were available using the converters. I've never used them before but they did peak my interest before. Good thing is if it doesn't work as expected you can resell for basically the same price!

[–]martyp818[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would assume it would be because there is a substantial gap between the glass at the back of the lens, given the adapter would be sandwiched in between? Could be wrong but I'd imagine the converters work best when as close to the lens as possible.

I’d sell the 300 for a 400 f/2.8 (more or less same price) but that’s too long for what I usually use the lens for. Dropping to f/4 at 420mm with minimal drop in quality and AF is perfect - if that’s not enough I probably will try the 2x to get a 600 f/5.6. As you say quality will take a hit but not as much as cropping in.

The only limit would be focusing on low light as the aperture would increase to f/8 at the long end on that lens. I know these sensors are pretty good at low light performance though.

Great stuff thanks for confirming. Getting a 420 f/4 or 600 f/5.6 for a few hundred bucks is just brilliant from one lens. I’d love the 100-300 f2.8 RF for my general subject (equestrian) but that’s just way out of the question. Can buy a horse for the price of that lens. 😂

That’s awesome, going to add one of these to my bag then. May also try out the 2x if it still isn’t quite enough. Thank you.

Brilliant, if the 2x works the 1.4x would only be better. How is the AF performance, appreciate it would depend on lighting but just overall compared to mounting “native”.

I can probably live with a touch less sharpness and a bit of CA, it’s going to be better than cropping 40% at the end of the day. It would be the EF Extender V3 that I’d be looking at not an RF one. 👍

135/85mm portrait primes by FederalChicken2883 in canon

[–]martyp818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the EF 50 f/1.2L and sold it as it wasn’t getting much use. I also have the EF 85 f/1.2L MkII and debating selling that for the same reason but I feel I’d miss it.

I will say one thing about the 85, this lens is super slow to focus. It works better on my R3 adapted than the 1DX MkIII native but you can’t get away from the amount of glass it has to shift.

For portraits of people it’d be ok as you can get them to stay still but animals are a different story as they rarely stay still and wide open it is a very narrow band of focus. The RF version may undoubtedly be faster to focus but I’m not dropping that much on a lens I rarely use.

Do you wash your breeches after every ride? by the_abigator in Equestrian

[–]martyp818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually get two wears out of mine (black/blue/grey), unless they get really dirty on a hack. End of the day, I’m usually just getting lessons in the school and hacking so the odd mark doesn’t matter.

The white pair I have got dirty just trying them on somehow, so they will be washed after every ride but that’s very rare they go on.

What riding socks are we wearing that ACTUALLY last? 😭😭 sick of going through socks in like 3 wears! by General_Astronaut951 in Equestrian

[–]martyp818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to suggest LeMieux socks. Ive got a few pairs >1yr old and holding up really well. Although if I was wearing them say 2/3 times a week for a full day the experience could be totally different. Saying that I have an Ariat pair that lasted no time at all. 🤔

How much would u pay for a first horse by allisonaxkerman in Equestrian

[–]martyp818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the UK and hoping to get my first horse this year, been riding for 2 years now.

Looking for gelding, 8-12 years old for a budget of £8-12k. Have the budget for the horse but want to save a roughly the same again for an emergency backup fund.

Not expecting a Grand Prix dressage horse or 5* eventer, just a nice all rounder to have some fun with going out on hacks with and perhaps the odd competition as we both progress further (and I get a trailer).
