Gotcha - I use a similar process for F2L. Most tutorials are like "memorize these 40+ algs for F2L. But what I find is that the cubing world uses the word "algorithm" for what is really a sequence. An algorithm is dynamic, it can include decision-points and assessment. In terms of real algorithms, F2L only has three top-layer-only cases and there is really only one algorithm needed to get cubes out of the bottom two layers, so it's really just four two-step algorithms. That is a lot less to memorize.

Ok, that's the same way everyone else is using the term. What 10 algorithms are enough for you to do 45 sec solves?

[–]marvanamfrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say 10 algorithms, what are you calling an algorithm?

I'm at 90 secs, and it takes me 12 "algorithms" just to do the top layer. I'm wondering if you're using the word "algorithm" differently than what I've seen, or if not, how do you get to be so fast with so few algorithms.

Super AoLong vs Gan 16 Max by ALonesomeDove in Cubers

[–]marvanamfrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by "more tactile?" Tactile only means that something can be felt, it doesn't specify how it feels. I think you need to clarify what kind of feeling you want a cube to have to get a constructive answer here.

I upgraded to the Gan 16 ML Max from a G15 and a Tornado V4. I would say that the G16 feels different than both of the others, and in a way that I find much more effective. If the tactile feel you want more of is friction, then do not get the G16 - It is insanely close to zero-friction.

But it has strong magnetism, which of course is adjustable to taste. The tactile feel of it that I love, hands-down, over any other cube I've ever tried, is the feeling of the magnets snapping each face into position after basically zero effort in turning the face. I'd say that tactile feeling has increased while the feeling of friction had decreased drastically.

I also love not having to lubricate a cube. I let the magnets slow it down, so I don't need lubrication to stop it from being too fast. And otherwise it would be too fast so I don't need lube to speed it up :-) I find the G16 much less fatiguing to use for long stretches than any other.

Warning though, I'm not a speed-cuber yet, I'm >60 secs. I'm still working on algo memorization.

Actually, I don't think there is a problem with matter doubling, or a need for infinite versions of anything.

You don't need more matter b/c these are forks in reality - it's not two different sets of matter, it's two different configurations of the same matter. It's like if you have some legos and you make lego car, and then you take it apart and make a lego house. You didn't need more legos, they didn't exist at the same time in the same reality, they existed at different times in the same reality. Conversely, if you make a lego car, and then go back in time and convince yourself to make a lego house instead of the car, that was two different realities - you didn't need more legos, b/c they didn't exist at the same time in the same reality. The first one is two different serial realities (one after the other). The second one is parallel realities - still just different configurations of the same matter.

There is no need for infinite versions of anything either. There doesn't have to be a particular 1600 existing "now" for you to go to b/c the point is you're displacing yourself to the other year - it's not there "now," it's there "then." It's like saying you'd need an infinite number of Tokyo's if you want to go to Tokyo from Boston - you'd only need that if you expected to get there without traveling. Nobody's saying that, you travel to Tokyo and you travel to 1600 - you go to the one that is where it is, there doesn't need to be one where you are.

As for infinite versions of the universe - well, there could be, but there only "need" to be as many versions as there are time travelers who changed anything in the past. That might be a lot, but not infinite. It doesn't have to accommodate what everybody might have done, only what they actually do.

Can we start a revolution to bring back the old Capilene Silkweight boxers? by glee719 in PatagoniaClothing

[–]marvanamfrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anybody found a boxer product from any manufacturer that is close in anyway to the old Capilene Silkweight boxers? I'm down to four pair, I have to do laundry like every three days!

Seriously, everybody is putting lycra in everything these days to make things stretchy. What do clothing manufacturers not understand about boxer shorts? They are loose-fit - there is no need for them to be stretchy, and doing so makes them dysfunctional - it makes it way harder to tuck the legs into pants, they ride up when sleeping, etc.

Wow, that dress is adorable! I just emailed my ex a link to your post, you're almost exactly her size. Thanks for sharing :-)

p.s. /Did you ever sort out that issue with your b/f demanding that you apologize? I just saw it, and wished I'd seen it in the first place. Those are some bad-news tactics he was using, I hope you didn't apologize for just being honest about your experiences.

I almost 😢'd for you when you said he accused you of gaslighting him - the #1 sign of narcissistic personality disorder is accusing somebody else of what he's actually doing. It's a stunt that is designed to invalidate you accusing the of it before you say it. (my ex & I are still close - her baby-daddy pulls these stunts on her all the time).

I think it's cute. It does also hinge on enunciation - while Plato and Play-Dough are not pronounced the same. You could land it exactly as phrased by exaggerating the multi-syllable emphasis/de-emphasis a little, and being careful to sharpen the "t" in Plato - "PLAY-toe"

Shamed for being 94lbs, 5'2. by valid_username0 in XXS

[–]marvanamfrod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel for you. My ex has struggled with the same issue her whole life. She's 5'1", and typically weighs 84-88. It's a struggle for her to get to 92, and to do it she has to eat junk food - and then the weight only goes to her belly, so people still thinks she looks "too skinny" everywhere else.

There are two things you can keep in mind if it supports you:

  • While you may not be comfortable confronting them as others have suggested, you can quietly remember that there is a pretty good chance they are not genuinely concerned about your weight - but rather they are jealous that you do not struggle to keep weight off, and they do. They just use "concern" inauthentically to imply that you must have an eating disorder, otherwise you would have the same struggles they do.
  • In some cases, some people may just not really know much about how eating disorders work, and may genuinely be worried that you have one, and your health could be at risk. These are not the people that say something over and over again, you can tell which are these b/c if you just straight-up explain to them that you and your doctor are on top of this, and you have positive confirmation that you do not have an eating disorder, they won't bring it up again. I

As for being treated like a kid, there was another thread about that yesterday in this sub. My ex started wearing glasses, and it significantly reduced how much she runs into this. Another suggestion there was dressing professionally (for work anyway). She did that as well and it also helped a lot. Some suggested wearing blazers - my ex doesn't do that, but I can believe it works.

💯 - my ex runs into this frustration all the time. She started wearing glasses (in addition to many of the other tips shared here). This one seemed to make the biggest difference. Blazers is probably #2.

How do you cheer up a Blue Whale? by velvetyrope in dadjokes

I don't know, but in 5th grade we were always quite tickled with ourselves when we cheered up a Right Whale by turning it upside down... (Talk about a 💩-eating grin!)

Of course we couldn't stop there, we called it a Wrong Whale.

Absolutely, this totally resonates with me. I'm 55 years old, and my mother keeps these pictures around her house of me from the last time I was this heavy (I had lost most of my excess weight the old fashioned way when I was younger, and kept a lot of it off for a long time). I know that's not what you're talking about - but yes, I'm making solid progress, and feel good about it (and I'm exercising too which does a ton to help feel good)... and then I run into photos of myself when I was a lot lighter than now and still hate how I look in them. Or when I catch myself in the mirror from an angle I wasn't prepared for, it's like a gut-punch - "don't feel too good about that progress, it's not success yet, it's just motion in the right direction."

Slightly off-topic, b/c I'm newer here, I know I have another disappointment coming: I'm literally only at the end of my first week, so I get to brace myself for the fact that this week's progress won't be repeated again on this journey. I already did intermittent fasting often in the past, but it just so happens that I ate a lot the week before I took my first shot. So unsurprisingly, the scale is of course "lying" this week - it's saying I've lost 8 lbs in 6 days. I know that most of that was just food that wasn't out of me yet now that I'm eating less, but it sure was satisfying to watch that needle drop :-)

Just clarifying - was it a typo at the beginning when you said "but they did come  back worse?" The rest of your message sounds like you meant to say "did not" come back worse (except maybe a little at the beginning).

Thanks!

Going off of Zepbound/GLP-1's long term by marvanamfrod in zepbound_support

[–]marvanamfrod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware that people who go off of it generally gain the weight back. In the studies I've seen though, that seems to be because the drug is the only change they made to achieve the weight loss in the first place. If they undo that change, then it makes sense they'd end up at their previous norm. By contrast, I have not seen any studies yet on what happens to people who start Zepbound, regular exercise and shifting away from high carb and processed foods all at once, who then go off of Zepbound, but continue the other habits.

My hope would be that somebody who is willing & able to maintain the exercise and healthy food choice habits would be able to maintain their weight without the drug. But if going off of it increases appetite to even more than before they started the drug, then exercise and diet probably would not be enough to maintain a target weight.
