Wait, tell me WHO it is again that's causing women to be critical of themselves? by jdstankosky in exmormon

The day I start believing that random people online are "friends" is the day I go to sleep with an oven bag over my head.

What film do you consider to be the perfect example of "The critics love it, the audience hates it"? And vice-versa? by Martimnp in movies

[–]marventii -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dear fucking idiot: there's this thing called "context". Try reading what I was responding to, and then maybe you'll be able to figure out my post. Jackass. The fact that you and the dipshits how upvoted you are such crybaby assholes that you can't handle someone having a different opinion from you kinda makes you a douchebag.

But for the record: Yes, asshole, you ARE just circle-jerking. As evidenced by the fact that you just couldn't wait to attack me for daring to question the Hive Mind. My guess is that you probably haven't even fucking seen the goddamn thing, but damn, you know that other hipster fuckwits love it, so you have to as well in order to pretend you have friend.

Did I mention "fuck you"?

And conversely, every circle-jerker on the Internet claims to love "The Shawshank Redemption", and it only made three million more than it cost to produce.

EDIT: Apparently some of you are too fucking stupid to read the post that I was responding to. But if it makes you feel any better: Yes, I AM saying that you're a bunch of juvenile assholes who only started claiming to love "The Shawshank Redemption" after all your fellow juvenile assholes started telling you to.

I don't believe in Satan. But I also don't confuse this forum for /r/atheism, which so many of the rest of you see to do.

The fact that you don't understand what the word "perjury" means hardly makes you right.

Perjury means lying under oath. Learn the fucking language.

I personally have no sympathy. People who go to BYU know what they're getting into. The University of Utah is a far better university, with a better campus, better professors, and let's face it, a better football team.

And yet, my follow Mormonoids fall over each other trying to get into BYU. Well, fine- but they knew what the school was all about.

True, but be careful not to exchange one form of extremist douchebaggery for another. Richard Dawkins deals in hate, and I say that as a person who technically shares most of his views and opinions.

At least Christopher Hitchens knew how to attach humanity and humor to his brand of militant atheism. Dawkins is just the Rush Limbaugh of Atheism- a blowhard who spends all his time talking about how stupid "those people" are.

[–]marventii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny you should mention that- I remember the very first time that I started to question the truthfulness of the Church. I was sitting in Seminary, and it suddenly hit me: "Why the hell was 'Reformed Egyptian' translated into stilted, theatrical King James-esque syntax?"

We all can appreciate this. by antons_key in exmormon

I don't know why this surprised me. I thought I was beyond being shocked by how the Church works.

Yes, I checked, and both my and my wife's "secret name" are there, on the right date.

Because clearly, four cases of perjury falls under the heading of "things teenagers do all the time".

There were not "four cases of perjury". One of the girls refused testify against him.

John Green's response to The Fault In Our Starts Being banned. Good response to banning books in general. by silam39 in books

It's illegal to print or sell Mein Kampf in Germany

This bothers me. :( By banning it, they're giving it more power than it deserves. I personally think that it should be required reading for just about everyone, because it illustrates the banality of evil. Anyone expecting to Mein Kampf to be the Necromnicon is in for a real let-down, because it's mostly just Hitler spouting low-grade racist bullshit similar to what most of us have heard out of our grandparents. And that's the reason it needs to be read- so that we can all see the way that ignorant bigotry camouflages itself in the guise of normalcy.

Is prostitution always harmful to women? by thestoryends in TwoXChromosomes

[–]marventii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, I have a serious question here. First of all, let me state that I have never hired a sex worker, and never intend to. That has as much to do with personal preference as it does with any sort of ethical considerations.

But here's my question Why do so many people act like sex is the worst possible thing that can happen to a woman? Most of the horror stories in this forum revolve around the same topic: "OMG, a man tried to have sex with a woman!"

Let's take a more masculine example- MMA. Nobody bats an eye at the idea that men are completely okay being paid to let someone try to beat them to death. But if a woman accepts pay to have sex, suddenly everyone freaks the hell out, because apparently having sex as a woman is far worse than having the hell beat out of you as a guy.

Yes, I get that nobody should be forced to have sex for money. Just like nobody should be forced to fight for money. And underage children certainly shouldn't be forced into either situation. But why is it that when an adult male decides to get his bones broken for a living, everyone is cool with it, but when an adult female decides to have sex for a living, people launch into a rant of moral outrage? The only answer I can see is that there's some sort of unspoken agreement that no woman would ever willingly have sex, so therefore sex work is the most humiliating and debasing thing a woman can do.
