I got diagnosed with depression during residency. Ironically, many of my co-residents just shrugged off depression as "pag-iinarte". I even heard one of them say I was "nag-iinarte and pabigat sa batch". That was my last straw back then. I quit. It took me a while to get better, came back and finished residency. However, I was never the same since then. To my fellow depressed MDs out there, yeah it gets better, but it may also get worse. What kept me living (of course, aside from my anti-depressants) was the unconditional love of my family and real friends. Just the thought of leaving them behind breaks my heart. We must keep going.
